A New Gibbs Energy Model for Obtaining Thermophysical Properties of Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions
Journal of Solution Chemistry, 2008
In this paper, a new Gibbs energy model is proposed to study the thermophysical properties of aqueous electrolyte solutions at various temperatures. The proposed model assumes that the electrolytes completely dissociate in solution. The model also has two temperature-independent adjustable parameters that were regressed using experimental values of the mean ionic activity coefficients (MIAC) for 87 electrolyte solutions at 298.15 K. Results from the proposed model for the MIAC were compared with those obtained from the E-Wilson, E-NRTL, Pitzer and the E-UNIQUAC models, and the adjustable model parameters were used directly to predict the osmotic coefficients at this temperature. The results showed that the proposed model can accurately correlate the MIAC and predict the osmotic coefficients of the aqueous electrolyte solutions better on the average than the other models studied in this work at 298.15 K. Also, the proposed model was examined to study the osmotic coefficient and vapor pressure for a number of aqueous electrolyte solutions at high temperatures. It should be stated that in order to calculate the osmotic coefficients for the electrolyte solutions, the regressed values of parameters obtained for the vapor pressure at high temperatures were used directly. The results obtained for the osmotic coefficients and vapor pressures of electrolyte solutions indicate that good agreement is attained between the experimental data and the results of the proposed model. In order to unequivocally compare the results, the same experimental data and same minimization procedure were used for all of the studied models.
A New Model for Predicting Activity and Osmotic Coefficients of Electrolyte Solutions
Iranian Journal of Science & Technology, 1998
Local Composition Concept (LCC) is combined with Kirkwood and Buff theory to propose a new model in terms of Radial Distribution Function (RDF) to evaluate the activity and osmotic coefficients of 1-1 and 1-2 strong aqueous electrolyte solutions. The model contains no adjustable parameter and can facilitate the calculations to a great extent. The RDF in the proposed model is obtained by solving integral equations of Percus-Y evick (PY), Hypernetted chain (HNC) and Mean Spherical Approximation (MSA). The effectiveness of these equations in accurately calculating the activity and osmotic coefficients is considered. The activity and osmotic coefficients evaluated by this model show better consistency with experimental data for HNC integral equation. It is concluded that in spite of the simplicity of the proposed model, comparing with similar models in its application to 1-1 and 1-2 strong electrolyte solutions, better agreement with experimental data is observed.
Thermodynamic Model for Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions with Partial Ionization
Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2013
An equation of state has been developed to describe the thermodynamic properties of single electrolytes in water within a wide range of temperatures from 25 °C to near the critical point of the solvent. The new equation of state was obtained from an analytical expression of the Helmholtz free energy containing three major contributions: (1) a discrete-solvent term to account for short-range interactions between uncharged particles based on the Peng-Robinson equation of state, (2) an ion charging term described by the continuum-solvent model of Born, and (3) a charge-charge interaction term given by the explicit mean-spherical-approximation (MSA) expression. The thermodynamic model proposed here incorporates chemical equilibrium for the dissolved electrolyte allowing the calculation of the corresponding degree of dissociation of the salt at different temperatures. The present equation of state was applied to the representation of mean ionic activity coefficients, osmotic coefficients, standard free energies of hydration of ions, and densities for NaCl, CaCl 2 , K 2 SO 4 , and MgSO 4 salts in water over a wide range of temperatures and salt molalities. The results indicated a good agreement between the experimental data and those calculated using the present equation of state.

The Liu-Harvey-Prausnitz model (1989a) for electrolyte solutions with ion-specific parameters is extended to simultaneously correlating the mean ionic activity coefficient data for 55 aqueous electrolytes including the H,SO,/H,O system up to the H,SO, concentration of 76 m. With only 1.6 adjustable parameters per aqueous electrolyte, an excellent agreement between the calculated values and the experimental data has been achieved. Ion-specific parameters are reported for 9 cations (H ', Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+,Cs+,Mg++,Ca++andZn++)andS anions (F-,Cl-, Br-, I-, OH-, NO;, CNS-and SO;-1. The results in this work are compared with those given by the Haghtalab-Vera model (1988) and the outcome is in favor of the Liu-Harvey-Prausnitz model.

A three-characteristic-parameter correlation model for strong electrolyte solutions
Fluid Phase Equilibria, 1998
In this study, a characteristic-parameter correlation model was developed for the aqueous strong electrolyte solutions. This correlation model consisted of the long-range ion-ion interaction described by Pitzer-Debye-Huckel model and short-range ion-solvent molecule interaction attributed to solvation effect. The proposed w approach is based on our previous paper of Lin et al. C.-L. Lin, L.-S. Lee, H.-C.Tseng, Fluid Phase Equilibria, Ž. x 90 1993 57-79.. However, the significant improvement was made that the differential equation was solved analytically instead of numerically. This proposed model contains three parameters of physical significance and has been used to estimate the mean activity coefficients of electrolytes and osmotic coefficients of 144 aqueous w strong electrolyte solutions from literature. Comparisons were made to the models of Chen et al. C.C. Chen, Ž. Ž .

The new predictive electrolyte model COSMO-RS-ES is evaluated and refined for the calculation of solubilities of salts in mixed solvent systems. It is demonstrated that the model is capable of predicting solid-liquid equilibria at 25 °C for ammonium and alkali metal salts quite accurately in a wide variety of solvent mixtures. Furthermore, through the introduction of Gibbs free energies of transfer of single ions it is shown that the model performance can be improved even further. This new data type also allows for an ion-specific way of evaluating the model for the first time. For some systems when calculating the solubility, larger deviations are observed, but for the vast majority of systems the model delivers good predictions. This shows that COSMO-RS-ES is a valuable tool for calculation of phase equilibria in electrolyte systems especially when the scarcity of data impede the application of models that require a higher number of parameters.
