Product-Service Lifecycle Management in Manufacturing: An Industrial Case Study

Product-Service is a recent concept based on a novel product understanding consisting of integrated product and service shares. It represents a new trend for industries to innovate their artefacts and create fresh business opportunities. However, moving from product to services requires the identification of the needed assets to create the new solution and the integration of both productrelated and service-related activities into a unique product-service lifecycle. In practice, such an evolution can be defined theoretically but it is hard to implement since supporting tools are strongly product-centred yet. As a consequence, product-service is still a fascinating idea especially in manufacturing sector. This paper tells about a success story of product-service management in manufacturing industry; it describes how a household appliances' manufacturer shifted from traditional product lifecycle towards product-service lifecycle to manage the new service. The study starts from analysis of the AS-IS processes and mapping of the ecosystem tangible and intangible assets, and describes how the company was supported into the definition of an integrated product-service lifecycle.

The adoption of advanced manufacturing intelligence technologies requires managing the interaction of information in Product-Service Systems (PSS) by combining Product (PLM) and Service Lifecycle Management (SLM). While up to now no sound methodology exists, there is a strong need to have bi-directional coordination and interaction between PLM and SLM in a systematic way. A further challenge is to close loops, for example feedback from service delivery to the beginning-of-life phase of products. The objective of this paper is therefore to identify the interactions between SLM and PLM in manufacturing firms, based on expert interviews and illustrated in PSS use cases.

Servitization of manufacturing is getting more importance in our global economy due to the need of manufacturing companies to maintain their sustainability, promoting this way a more long term relation with their customers, and innovating and supplying added value with their products. Therefore, manufacturing companies are challenged to move into a paradigm shift that is to go from considering independently products and services and start to consider them integrated. To integrate services, in their core products, and to support this, process organizational changes are required, and methodologies that integrate the product and services development processes. An effective integration of these processes creates a potential for product-service innovation, that being exploited, contribute to increase competitiveness and to ensure sustainable businesses. In this article, we propose a new methodology for the development of product-service systems (PSS) that promotes the execution of processes for designing products and services, as a parallel sequence of activities, which leads to a consistent product-service development. The proposed methodology contributes for a clear understanding about the processes to be used in product-service design and development, the required organizational changes, and the integration of product-service design with business model definition.
An Integrated Collaborative Platform for managing Product-service Across their Life Cycle

Product-Service System (PSS) design methodologies have been extensively researched during the past years. Various tools and methods have been established for the incorporation of sustainability and system-oriented lifecycle thinking in the design of PSS. This paper presents an integrated collaborative platform that aspires to conceptualize a new landscape of modular product-services that will be tracked throughout their lifecycle using a network of smart sensors enabling the extraction of useful value. The concept is based on a series of distinct components supported by a common semantic knowledge base, enabling the seamless collaboration of partners of multiple disciplines for the realization of product-services. Moreover, a set of services are used, which are integrated with the sensor network to return information about the performance of the PSS to the customers and the product designer, supporting them in the decision making process. Finally, an application of the proposed methodology in an industrial scenario is presented.

Manufacturing companies have traditionally focused their efforts on designing, developing and producing physical products for the market. Today, global competition, outsourcing and legislation commend that companies take greater responsibility of their products. This is driving some manufacturers to shift their business strategies from selling products (e.g. photocopying machines) to the provision of services (e.g. document services). Instead of the product itself, the activity and knowledge associated with the use of the product is perceived to be of more value to customers. In the research community, service-oriented approaches that embrace this change of business focus from individual products to total integrated customer solutions are termed Product/Service-Systems (PSS). The research in this thesis addresses the systematic design and development of PSS solutions in manufacturing firms. Here PSS are understood on three levels in relation to design: 1. PSS solution-a system of integrated products and services that companies develop and deliver to customers. 2. The co-evolution of industrial production and social patterns calls for systemic solutions that can only be provided by partnerships between companies and other stakeholders, including final users. Such partnerships are defined as Solution Oriented Partnerships (or SOP). Product Service Systems (PSS) are the catalyser of such solutions. The capability of PSS to become an attractive solution depends on factors that are commonly considered to belong to the design domain. The role of designers is therefore essential to the definition of effective and attractive PSS.
Engineering Product-Service Solutions: An Application in the Power and Automation Industry
Manufacturing companies are heavily competing for the identification of new sources of value for the market, moving from a traditional transaction-based and product-centric orientation towards the provision of integrated solutions to their customers. In this context, Service Engineering, the discipline concerned with the systematic development and design of service and productservices, is gaining particular relevance for mastering the service lifecycle management of a product-service solution. This paper provides a contribution in this field with the description of a Service Engineering Framework platform to support the reengineering of the service offering in a multinational company operating in the power and automation industry, with the aim to provide a customized solution able to fulfill the specific customer requirements and at the same time to gain a better efficiency in the delivery of the service processes.

Product Service Systems (PSS) is a concept which means product and service are integrated to meet customer requirements. It has many applications in several industries. In current researches, Product Life Cycle Modelling and Service Engineering (SE) are main methodologies to design and model PSS. This paper proposes a framework of service life cycle integrating product life cycle. Each stage of service life cycle contains a number of service processes. Each service process is modelled using Service Engineering. This paper also proposes a primary input & output parameters system for the service process model, which integrates costs, resource consumptions and states of product or customer. At the end of the paper, the authors discuss the future work to improve this model.
