The growing use and impact of artificial intelligence technologies in the tourism industry
Sustainable Engineering and Innovation, 2023
The research relevance is determined by the increasing role of artificial intelligence in the tourism business, which was demonstrated during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bali, resulting in a decline in the number of tourists visiting the island. The research aims to investigate the real-life experience of applying artificial intelligence systems in the tourism industry to address the challenges of developing the tourism industry in Bali, Indonesia. The basis of the methodological approach is a combination of theoretical methods of analysis and synthesis of the collected information covering the practical experience of the application of artificial intelligence systems in the tourism industry, as well as a survey of customers of travel agencies that have used such systems in trips to Bali. The research results show that artificial intelligence can significantly help the tourism business in Bali, as the number of tourists visiting the island dropped by 40% during the pandemic, resulting in a reduction in the number of tourism staff. The practical application of systems based on artificial intelligence opens up a wide range of business opportunities, as it allows for optimizing the activities of tourism firms and providing customers with high-quality services with highly technical equipment. The use of neural network mathematical models of tourist firms' activity based on AI, allows them to achieve high speed of data processing, which allows tourist firms numerous competitive advantages and significantly improves the quality of their services. The practical significance of the results of this scientific research lies in the possibility of their application in the organization of the activities of enterprises in the sphere of tourism business, built on the use of digital technologies and systems based on artificial intelligence.
Managing Artificial Intelligence as a Driver for Future Tourism
Proceedings of the ... International Management Conference, 2022
The present paper aims to emphasize how Artificial Intelligence can be managed in tourism industry in order to create a positive impact. Although everyone tends to believe that Artificial Intelligence is only about robots taking over the world, the purpose of this article is to come up with powerful meanings of the cognitive computing benefits. For instance, Artificial Intelligence encompasses a lot of different types of capabilities which can give us a better information to run the tourism businesses, but also to improve the customer's experience. To make this study much more significant, we conducted a content analysis based on literature review, within Leximancer computer software, which shows us the most important themes and concepts related to Artificial Intelligence in future tourism.
Artificial Intelligence in the Tourism Industry: An Overview of Reviews
Administrative sciences, 2023
This study aims to comprehensively synthesize existing literature on AI in tourism, highlighting key themes, strengths, and limitations, and illuminating pathways for future research, including the identification of emerging areas within this context. AI technology is rapidly transforming various sectors, including tourism, by augmenting customer service, improving operational efficiency, personalizing travel experiences, and supporting sustainability initiatives. Despite the growing body of research on this topic, there is a need for a comprehensive and systematic summary of the existing literature to illuminate the most effective uses of AI in this context and to identify gaps for future research. We employed the ‘overview of reviews’ methodology, which involved systematically locating, appraising, and synthesizing the results of previous review articles. Using Web of Science, we identified and analyzed 31 previous review articles on the application of AI in tourism. Their synthesis presents a comprehensive perspective on the present status of AI technology in the tourism sector. It provides valuable insights, not only for practitioners contemplating the implementation of AI solutions but also for academics aspiring to advance this study area. Moreover, the academic implications of this study reaffirm its objective to shape future inquiries into AI applications within tourism, advocate for the efficacious and sustainable employment of AI, and provoke scholarly exploration at the nexus of technology and sustainability in this sector.

Tourism is one of the biggest industries in the world and its contribution to the global economy has continued to grow. Due to the rapid development of technology, tourism has seen some critical changes in how people interact with the industry. By applying artificial intelligence (AI) to different aspects of the tourism business, it is possible to increase efficiency by using resources more effectively. This paper aims to provide insights into how AI technologies can be applied to different aspects of tourism operations and services to improve the customer experience both online and offline and at service providers such as hotels. A literature review is conducted based on the PRISMA methodology by running searches on databases Scopus and Web of Science. This research contributes to providing an overview of how current AI technologies are used in the tourism industry and how they may be used in the future to enhance customers' experiences when interacting with different aspects of tourism. It also examines various concerns that need further investigation before adoption can occur. The review shows that the application of AI technologies can improve numerous facets of tourism operations and services, resulting in numerous advantages.
Artificial Intelligence in Smart Tourism: A Conceptual Framework
2018
Smart tourism destination as: an innovative tourist destination, built on an infrastructure of state-of-the-art technology guaranteeing the sustainable development of tourist areas, accessible to everyone, which facilitates the visitor’s interaction with and integration into his or her surroundings, increases the quality of the experience at the destination, and improves residents’ quality of life. Lopez de Avila (2015). Smart tourism involves multiple components and layers of “smart” include (1) Smart Destinations which was special cases of smart cities integration of ICT’s into physical infrastructure, (2) Smart experience which specifically focus on technology-mediated tourism experience and their engagement through personalization, context-awareness and real-time monitoring, (3) Smart business refer to the complex business ecosystem that creates and supports the exchange of touristic resource and the co-creation of tourism experience. Gretzel et al, (2015). Smart tourism also cl...
Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Tourism Planning: A Hetero-Intelligence Methodology Proposal
Tourism & Management Studies, 2024
This study explores the growing significance of Large Language Models (LLMs) in tourism, for their current and potential applications. It aims to achieve two primary objectives: first, to develop a novel hetero-intelligence framework merging human and artificial intelligence (AI) to address contemporary sustainability challenges in tourism; second, to validate this framework by applying it to sustainable tourism planning, assessing LLMs' capabilities and limitations. The research employs a hetero-intelligence performance test, contrasting human intelligence and AI contributions in sustainable tourism planning with overtourism as a proxy challenge. Results showed that hetero-intelligence could effectively address sustainability issues in tourism, provided human and AI strengths and weaknesses are understood. LLMs proved useful in diagnosing and proposing solutions for sustainability-related issues. However, a rigorous methodological framework is essential to ensure unbiased outcomes. The research offers practical guidelines for applying this approach and significantly contributes to epistemological and empirical dimensions, providing valuable insights for researchers and tourism planners. The study calls for more empirical research to validate the methodology and explore ethical and legal dimensions, extending hetero-intelligence applications to broader sustainability challenges in tourism.
