Creativity: Interacting with Computers (original) (raw)

How can computers be partners in the creative process: Classification and commentary on the Special Issue

International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, 2005

The different ways that computers can be involved in creative work are examined. A classification based on four categories of human-computer interaction to promote creativity is proposed: computers may facilitate (a) the management of creative work, (b) communication between individuals collaborating on creative projects, (c) the use of creativity enhancement techniques, (d) the creative act through integrated human-computer cooperation during idea production. The papers in the Special Issue are discussed according to this classification. Issues to be considered in future work on human-computer interactions for promoting creativity are discussed.

Computers and Creativity

2012

In this paper we introduce and reflect on current research questions regarding computers and creativity. Creativity is an enigmatic yet widely discussed phenomena. With the now widespread adoption of computers and information technologies, the nature of creativity and how we think about it has changed significantly. We argue for a shift in thinking about computers from tools to creative agents and collaborative partners. We present 21 questions we think are crucial to understanding this new relationship and begin to offer answers, or pathways to answers for a selective subset.

Computer supported creative design : a pragmatic approach

2018

Abstract: "Creativity is recognizable only in a given context thereby making its definition elusive. In design, creativity in a domain may depend on characteristics of the process or the product, or both. In this paper, we argue that a better understanding of creativity can occur by focusing on the conditions that allow for creative acts. With respect to design research, we believe that it would be most productive to create computer supported design environments that stress the complementary nature of human and computer design capabilities. These capabilities and their relationships are reviewed to indentify some of the critical issues in designing and building such environments.

Computers and Creative Design

2001

This paper introduces notions of creativity and creative design as a form of computational exploration. Exploration is used as a means of defining spaces which are then searched. It is shown that schemas provide an opportunity to describe exploration. Emergence as a process which modifies schemas is described, as a 'creative process'. Visual emergence is elaborated and other forms of emergence are described. The role of emergence in creative design is presented.

Computer creativity is a matter of agency

Institute of Arts and Ideas, 2021

Computer programs are generating artworks of astonishing novelty and aesthetic value. By the standard definition of creativity, these programs would count as being creative. But if you still hesitate to call a program creative, that's for good reason, we argue. It's because real creativity requires AGENTS who are responsible for what they make, and it's not at all clear that these programs are agents. (The title was imposed by the editor. It was supposed to be called, "ARE COMPUTERS CREATIVE?")

Creativity and Technology

Since creativity and technology are considered as the cores of development and innovation in our age. Therefor it is important to have a better understands of the role and impacts of digital technologies on human’s creativity and its end product. In order to do so, I tried to answer the following questions; A) Do technology really expands, aids, and creates creativity? B) Do they both have contradicting conceptions? In short, I am trying to examine the impact of the usage of digital technologies on the creativity of humans in design. In trying to do so, I have implemented a qualitative method based mainly on logical interpretation and review of literature. As a conclusion, I found that creativity in the first place relays on the creative person, not on the technology. And that technology may help only in expressing creativity, but not creating it. Also there are conceptual contradictions between them. Finally, I can say that: considering technological thought as the primer thought mode of our age as peters argued (Peters, 2000) is crucial enough to threat peoples’ creativity.
