Zanjan province in NW Iran, with diverse climatic and topographic conditions includes a considerable part of Astragalus gene pool. From 2007 through 2009, a collection as complete as possible was made in this area by the authors. As a results of this study, we added 41 species to the already 75 known species for this province. Furthermore, 9 new species were described for the area from which one new species (Astragalus fausicola Podlech ex Bagheri, Maassoumi & F. Ghahrem. from sect. Incani DC.) is introduced.
Astragalus ghouchanensis (Fabaceae), a new species from Iran
Annales Botanici …, 2009
Astragalus ghouchanensis Souzani, Zarre & Maassoumi (Fabaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Iran. It is compared with some similar species in Astragalus sect. Dissitiflori. Some notes are given on the affinities of sect. Dissitiflori and sect. Erioceras.

Astragalus hakkianus a new species of Astragalus (Fabaceae) from N.W. Iran
Feddes Repertorium, 2013
Astragalus kazempourii is described as a new species from Firuzkuh in Tehran province, Iran. Morphological data and phylogenetic analyses of the nrDNA internal (ITS) and external transcribed spacer (ETS) regions places this species within sect. Hypoglottidei as sister of Astragalus parvarensis. The new species differs morphologically from A. parvarensis by having a short stem densely covered with basifixed hairs, short peduncles and a long calyx. A distribution map of the new species is provided and the habitat condition of the taxon and close relatives, as well as the conservation status of A. kazempourii are discussed. The phylogenetic analyses conducted also support the recent transfer of Astragalus bojnurdensis from A. sect. Brachylobium to sect. Hypoglottidei, which was in accordance with the morphological characters of this species.
Two new species and a new record of the genus Astragalus (Fabaceae) from NE Iran
Nova Biologica Reperta, 2018
During the study on the specimens of Astragalus sect. Ammodendron in the herbarium of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUMH), based on the last and most recent sources, two new species, i.e. A. microfoliolatus sp. nova and A. rashed-mohasseli sp. nova were found and described. Morphological evidence confirmed that the belonging of these taxa to Astragalus sect. Ammodendron. The most important differences between A. microfoliolatus and its closest relatives are leaflets with very small size and glabrescent legume. Also, the main distinctive characters ofA. rashed-mohasseli are the presence of hairs on the dorsal side of vexillum, oblong legume and short rachis. Hairy vexillum has been obseverd for the first time in this section. In addition, A. aiwadzhi is recorded as a new species for the flora of Iran. Taxonomic descriptions, illustrations and distribution maps are provided to expedite identification.
Astragalus pendulipodus (Fabaceae), a new species from Iran
2005
Astragalus pendulipodus Ranjbar & Karamian sp. nova (Fabaceae) is described from Iran and illustrated, and placed in Astragalus sect. Ammodendron. It is confined to the western part of Iran (Prov. Zanjan) and known from two localities. Some characters in A. pendulipodus suggest that it is closely related to A. ovalis.

Astragalus sect. Astragalus (Fabaceae) in Iran
Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005
Astragalus rahiminejadii , a new species endemic to Iran, is described and illustrated. This species, which belongs to section Astragalus , is confined to the western part of Iran (Prov. Kermanshah) and is known only from a single population. Seed testa morphology as viewed under the scanning electron microscope is discussed and photomicrographs are provided. In addition, the geographical distribution and ecology of the species belonging to this section are discussed.
Two new species of Astragalus L. sect. Incani DC. (Fabaceae) from the Zanjan province (Iran)
Adansonia, 2012
Astragalus dilutuloides Maassoumi, F.Ghahrem. & Bagheri, sp. nov. and Astragalus montis-queydari F.Ghahrem., Maassoumi & Bagheri, sp. nov. are described as new species. Morphological evidence (bifurcated trichome, acaulescence, free stipules, bibracteolate, non-inflated calyx in fruit) supports taxonomic placement of the new taxa in Astragalus L. sect. Incani DC. These are endemic to the Zanjan province of western Iran. Astragalus dilutuloides is close to A. dilutulus Maassoumi, but it differs with having longer habit, longer stipules, longer leaves, in leaves indumentum, longer peduncle, and color of bract and bracteoles hairs. Astragalus montis-queydari is close to A. xiphidiopsis Bornm., but it differs from the first new species with having longer stipules, fewer leaflets, shorter peduncle, and inflorescence with fewer flowers (4-10 vs 10-20).
