Life-style intervention: A conceptual framework
Patient Education and Counseling, 1984
Improving one's lifestyle may improve one's health. However, there is a lack of consensus on how to promote compliance with newly adopted health habits. This paper presents a conceptual framework that individuals can learn to assess their lifestyles and plan for healthbehavior changes. It can also be used by professionals from different disciplines who are developing programs to teach healthy lifestyle choices. The framework is organized into three ideas: (1) Health status to a large extent reflects the individual's styles of living (a composite of beliefs, emotions, and action patterns). (2) These styles can be encouraged or sabotaged by the individual's support structures (relationships, environments, and equipment). (3) The change process can be seen as a series of steps that cycle through phases of readiness appraisal, decision making, experimentation, and reevaluation. Clinical examples and documentation from relevant theory and research illustrate and substantiate the framework.
Life Style Education: Are We Prepared for Changes?
Studies in English Language and Education, 2016
The public should be aware of the sudden change of life style of some people that makes their life completely different from their previous ones. All of us must be ready to face any circumstances from this manifestation in the future. The rich, wealthy and famous should be made aware that that type of life style is not wrong, but they should also be taught how to follow a normal way of life. Proper guidance and counselling on how to live normally needs to be provided with especially designed lectures and classes. Bringing these “students” to remote villages where the poor and the disadvantaged live may help them to understand the hardships of life around them. Having a short intern period within such a community will help them further understand the real life of the majority in their country. Furthermore, if they are always taught in an environment of luxury and are never faced with a normal education system and style of life, a major problem arises: if, in the future, our country ...
Demographic Variables Influencing Perceived Effectiveness of Career Guidance during Life Orientation
Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences, 2015
Career guidance at secondary schooling level is pivotal in preparing learners for the current globalized workforce and is also a core pillar of Life Orientation. The aim of this study was twofold subsuming determining the effectiveness of career guidance as perceived by 430 Grade 10 learners in the Mangaung area and to determine the demographic variables that influenced said perceived effectiveness. By means of descriptive statistics, personal confidence, personality inventories, knowledge of career plan, overall subject satisfaction and service delivery were examined. Service delivery was further disaggregated to determine the effectiveness of subcomponents. A T-test and MANOVA were performed to investigate the demographic variables. Findings reflect a deficit in the domains of personal confidence and service delivery, with a higher perceived effectiveness pertaining to knowledge and subject satisfaction. Gender, age, home language and type of school statistically significantly influenced perceived effectiveness. Type of school was the most important determinant of perceived effectiveness of career guidance received. Within the South African context these results suggest a lingering influence of segregation as not everyone is privy to effective career guidance hampering economic development and keeping a large part of the country in poverty. It is suggested that the results of the study be used as an impetus to stimulate further study focusing on specific types of schools.
Sustainability
Continuous professional development refers to maintaining, enhancing, and broadening individuals’ knowledge, skills, and the personal qualities required in their professional lives. The present experimental study attempts to explore the way(s) that the Life Construction intervention: “Constructing my Future Purposeful Life” contributes to career counselors’ sustainable career development. Two groups of career counselors participating in a training program delivered by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens were involved, namely, an experimental group (N = 33) that received the intervention and a control group (N = 27) that did not receive any intervention. The effectiveness of the intervention was verified through qualitative and quantitative analysis, including the calculation of effect sizes, of the data obtained through the Future Career Autobiography, and the Greek version of the Life Project Reflexivity Scale. The results indicate that the Life Construction Interven...

Evidence based policy development is currently underscored international. Specifically within the South African context it is of great concern that Life Orientation as part of Educational policy has been implemented without any clear indication of its efficacy. The article reports on the development and validation of a measuring instrument designed to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of career guidance received as part of the subject Life Orientation. The sample consisted out of 430 grade 10 respondents from the Mangaung area, the capital of the Free State province. A 25-item self-reporting instrument was utilized measuring service delivery, personal confidence, completion of personality inventories, subject satisfaction and knowledge of career path. The theoretical underpinning for the before mentioned questionnaire was the Social Cognitive Career Development Theory. Cronbach Alpha Coefficient was used to determine the reliability of the scale ( = 0.86), followed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 6-factor solution, however parallel analysis and scree-test identified a 3-factor solution. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the 3-factor model was a good fit. It is recommended that the questionnaire be amended and tested in various other provinces and that results of various studies are used in educational policy development.
