Signs of keratoconus, including Munson's sign, apical thinning, and Vogt's striae, developed in a 41-year-old woman 6 years after successful penetrating keratoplasty. Screening donor corneas for ectatic diseases may prevent such occurrences.
Density of mast-cells and Microvessels Density in head and neck cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Background and Aim: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) is the second most common skin cancer. Mast cells may play a role in tumor progression and metastasis by increasing angiogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of mast cells by increasing angiogenesis in invasion of head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 4 microns slices gotten from 30 paraffined blocks of head & neck well differentiated CSCC stained for evaluation of small blood vessels density using CD34 immunomarker and evaluation of mast cell density with toluidine blue. The number of small vessels and mast cells were counted in ten microscopic fields in the areas with the highest density. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 21 and Mann Whitney, Kruskal-wallis and Pearson's correlation coefficient tests. Significance level was considered as P <0.05. Results: There was no statistically significant relationship between the density of mast cells and the density of small blood vessels and whether the increase in mast cells causes the increase of small blood vessels or not. (P = 0.142) and correlation coefficient (r = 0.274). Conclusion: According to the results obtained in this study, based on the lack of correlation between the density of small blood vessels and the number of mast cells in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, this trend does not seem to play a role in the pathogenesis of head & neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
Background and Objective: Using dendritic cells (DCs) loaded with tumor antigens as a therapeutic strategy against tumors has been proposed. In order to increase the efficacy of DCs, a variety of factors such as TLR ligand molecules and bacterial products are used. In this study, the protein components of the bacteria Listeria monocytogeneses (LM) for induction of dendritic cell maturation were used. Materials and Methods: Bone marrow cells of Balb/c mice in the presence of IL-4 and GM-CSF were cultured for 5 days. On day 5, tumor lysate and then protein components or total extract of LM was added to immature DCs. In order to survey the maturation status of DCs, on day 7, the expression of CD80, CD86 AND MHC-II on the cell surface was evaluated. After induction of tumors in mice using WEHI-164 cell line, 10 6 mature dendritic cells subcutaneously injected. Tumor growth rate, survival rate and cytotoxic activity of spleen cells were evaluated in the studied groups. Results: In mice vaccinated with protein components matured-DCs, delayed tumor growth rate and increased survival were seen. In addition, in these mice, the cytotoxic activity of spleen cells was higher compared to other groups. In all groups receiving protein components or total extract mature-DCs, increased cytotoxic activity and decreased tumor growth rate were seen compared to controls. Conclusion: Listeria monocytogenes protein components compared to total extract have higher ability to increase the efficacy of DCs for tumor immunotherapy in mouse model.

Background & Aims: In today's society, chemicals have many benefits and applications. One of these chemicals is Drabkin's solution which is used in the hematology laboratory. Drabkin's solution is toxic and is harmful to skin health. In this study, considering the chemical composition of vitamin C and the phytochemical properties of ginger plant, we decided to investigate the effects of the hydroalcoholic solution of this plant on the survival of normal skin and gum cells in the presence of Drabkin solution. Materials & Methods: Protective effects of ginger extract and vitamin C (doses 0.1, 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 μM) on the toxicity caused by Drabkin's solution was measured by colorimetric assay (MTT) to investigate the survival and viability of normal gingival and skin cells. Prism statistical software version 8 and one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests were used for statistical analysis. A significance level of P<0.05 was considered. Results: The results of this study showed that high concentrations of vitamin C and ginger inhibit the toxicity of Drabkin's solution, so that there was a significant increase in the growth of normalized cells. Drabkin's solution in concentrations higher than 50 μM has toxicity on the studied cell lines. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the consumption of ginger extract and vitamin C in different concentrations increased the growth of normal cells of the gums and skin, and as a result, caused cell protection from the damage caused by Drabkin's solution.
Histopathologic Evaluation of Normal Radiolucent Space around Impacted Third Molar

The follicular tissue around impacted third molar has a potential to develop to different lesions. However, it is generally accepted that the absence of abnormal radiolucency indicates the presence of a normal follicle. The aim of this study was to histopathologically evaluate the normal pericoronal radiolucencies associated with impacted third molars. Materials & Methods: The follicular space of 104 third molars with normal follicular space (<2.5mm) in panoramic radiographs was measured. Under local anesthesia, tooth and its follicle were taken out by surgical procedure and after necessary steps, were histopathologically evaluated. Data were analyzed by fisher's exact test, chi-square and logestic regression (α=0.05). Results: Thirty eight cases (36.5%) of all follicles had been collected from male, and 63.5% (66 cases) from female patients. 92 follicles (88.5%) had been taken out of mandible and 12 follicles (11.5%) from maxilla. Of the specimens submitted, 41.3% (43 cases) showed cystic changes equivalent to that in dentigerous cysts. Cystic changes in dental follicles were significantly higher in patients over 20 years of age (P<0.0001). No significant difference was detected between sex of patients and cystic changes in follicles (P>0.05). Impacted third molars with normal pericoronal radiolucency more than 1.5 mm showed cystic changes in 63.3% of the cases. Conclusion: This study confirms the idea that the risk of cystic changes increases with age. Considering the high incidence of cystic changes in pericoronal radiolucencies associated with impacted third molars, this study suggests prophylactic removal of impacted third molar.
Cytotoxic Effects of all-trans-retinoic acid with cisplatin on esophageal cancer cell line(KYSE30)

Background: All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), an active metabolite of vitamin A, is widely used for induction of differentiation, growth and proliferation of epithelial cells. Anticancer drug cisplatin induces apoptosis by cross-linking to DNA that it is commonly used for treatment of ovarian, head and neck, esophageal, and gastric cancers and melanoma. Previous studies on ovarian cancer and melanoma cell lines, suggesting additive effects of retinoic acid with cisplatin. The present study is the first study on simultaneous effects of all-trans retinoic acid and cisplatin on human esophageal cancer cell line KYSE-30. Material and Methods: In this experimental study, KYSE-30 cell line was cultured in presence of different concentration of ATRA alone and in combination with cisplatin. Then, cell death was investigated by clonogenic assay and acridine orange/ ethidium bromide staining. Results: The results showed that ATRA concentrations ≥15µM cause differentiation of KYSE30 to squamous cell morphology, while lower concentrations decreases the colony formation (p≤0.05). The best effects on cell death were observed in 10 µM of ATRA of combination with 5 and 10 µg/ml of cisplatin. Conclusions: Concomitant use of low concentrations of retinoic acid and cisplatin increases apoptosis and necrosis, thus reducing the number of cell line KYSE-30 colonies compared with cisplatin alone.

Collagen content and its configuration are considered to be among important criteria of healing in tissues. Therefore, developing a method to estimate these factors can benefit physicians in terms of valuable information. In this paper, we examine variation of collagens in tissue mimicking phantoms as well as in vivo tissue taking advantage of applying image processing techniques on ultrasound images of samples. In phantoms, as the base tissue we have used agar-water matrix material and graphite to simulate collagen, respectively. We also have used different concentrations of graphite to simulate different contents of collagen according to attenuation coefficient of ultrasound waves in soft tissue and its correlation with weight ratio of graphite. Experimental and simulation results show that increase in concentration of graphite in phantoms results in higher energy and more contrast level in B-Mode images (r = 0.99 , p < 0.001 and r = 0.96 , p = 0.01, respectively). Acupuncture is one of the most effective methods of alleviating pain in different situations including chronic and acute pain management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in the reduction of post-operative pain after hernia repair. Methods: In this placebo-controlled, double-blinded clinical trial, we enrolled 60 male patients aged 30 to 60 years old with an ASA physical status of I or II undergoing elective inguinal hernia repair under general anesthesia in Imam Khomeini Hospital, Tehran, Iran. All patients experienced standard anesthetic and surgical procedures. After completion of the operation and while the patients were still under general anesthesia, they were randomly assigned to two groups: acupuncture (with stimulation of GV2, GV4 and SP6 points with sterile acupuncture needles), and control (with sham acupuncture stimulation). After termination of anesthesia, during the first six hours, the pain intensity was evaluated hourly. Pethidine (25 mg) was administered for the patients when necessary. Pain intensity and pethidine use were recorded and compared between the two groups. Results: The mean age of two groups did not differ. Pain intensity was significantly lower in the acupuncture group between the second and fifth postoperative hours. Moreover, pethidine use was significantly lower in the acupuncture group versus the control group during the first six hours after surgery (12.07±7.5 mg vs. 12.91±6.5 mg, respectively; p=0.0001). Conclusion: The application of acupuncture in patients is associated with a marked decrease in pain after inguinal hernia repair and does not have any serious complications. Acupuncture is strongly recommended for all post-operative patients.
