Transgender-Specific Politics and Policy in Asia
Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Politics
Acute discrimination has been witnessed across Asia regardless of individual countries’ specific policies towards transgender people. As individuals, it would be reassuring to believe that Article 1 of the UN Charter, which states that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights,” would encourage people to ignore gender differences. In different parts of Asia, even where transgender people have been officially recognized, their rights are fragile. Indeed, today activists focus more on women’s rights than on the rights of all sexual minorities, who as a consequence often live in extreme poverty and ill-health. The exclusion of the transgender community in governmental policymaking is another salient reason for their current living conditions. Even though transgender candidates participate in elections in most countries, their representation in parliaments is rare. Furthermore, violence toward the transgender community is such a common scenario that it has become n...

Discrimination against gender is a pervasive and long running phenomenon that characterizes Indian society at every level. Our society has naturalized the binary of male and female to a large extend that it has forgotten to acknowledge the sexual diversity that exists. Transgender is one of the gender identities that do not match with ones assigned sex at birth. They are known by different names such as hijras (eunuch), kinnar, aravani, kothi, shiv-shakti, etc in India. They have been occupying a large number of populations but still experiencing different obstacles in their day to day life. Due to social stigma, economic insufficiency, transphobia, etc. they are not able to participate in different aspects of our society including political life like the other two genders. An attempt has been made in this paper to highlight some of the barriers that come in the path of their political participation in India. Despite these entire negative stereotypes they are trying to take active participation in political activities. This paper also intends to showcase some possible proposals to increase the level of political participation of the transgender in India.

"Transgender: examining a new political identity using three political processes"
Politics, Groups, and Identities
This study examines the construction of a new political identity category in the USA during the 1990s, transgender, focusing on three political processes: (1) conflict over meanings associated with the identity category; (2) backlash in the form of stigmatization from other groups that prompted frame transformation; and (3) representation, particularly across political venues where information about the new identity category is disseminated. Using a Historical Discourse Analysis approach to the archived documents of transgender social movement activists, publications, and interest groups from 1990 to 1999, this study shows how activists and leaders shaped what had previously been disparate groups into a unified identity category and associated interest group coalition to represent transgender-identified people. While this new identity category and coalition allowed the projection of unity that is necessary in contemporary interest group politics, this analysis shows that it also obscured important differences within the transgender identity category and helped to produce within-group marginalization and exclusions that endure in contemporary transgender, lesbian, and gay politics.
