THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION SCALE: THE STUDY OF VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY
Interpersonal communication is one of the crucial elements of human communication. Interpersonal communication has some authentic features. It is inescapable. Not communicating is not an option; even the act of not communicating communicates something. It is also irreversible, complex and contextual. All these characteristics make interpersonal communication as a communicative phenomenon to be studied in depth. This study reports the development process of an interpersonal communication scale. As a result of reliability and validity studies a seven-item questionnaire is developed in order to investigate interpersonal communication tendencies of persons. Interpersonal Communication Scale (ICS) has two factors: External Perception and Internal Disseverance. External Perception defines an individual’s ability to interact with others, and Internal Disseverance refers to one’s desire to remove the distance between the individual, which they are communicating. The components of these two factors were explored in two studies using various measures of communication, self-deception, social desirability, and gender. External perception was found to predict an individual’s perception ability, gender, and their ability to communicate with others. Internal disseverance was discovered to predict an individual’s desire to communicate, flexibility and competence in regards to communication. At the end of statistical analyses, the scale is verified as a reliable and valid tool. The ICS developed in this study can be used as a reliable data collection instrument for the studies in interpersonal communication field for various contexts. The paper concludes some implications for further research.

Validating the Interpersonal Communication Assessment Scale

Despite the centrality of interpersonal communication in nursing, there are few psychometrically sound instruments to measure the communication competencies of undergraduate and graduate nursing students. This article reports on the development and testing of the Interpersonal Communication Assessment Scale (ICAS), which was designed to assess the communication competencies of students in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Retroductive triangulation, using both deductive and inductive methods, and the Model of Relational Competence guided the measure's conceptualization and development. We used responses from 531 (24%) undergraduate and graduate clinical faculty from 246 American Association of Colleges of Nursing member schools for the psychometric testing of the 54-item content-validated and pilot-tested ICAS. Exploratory factor analysis resulted in a three-factor solution labeled as advocacy, therapeutic use of self, and validation. These factors accounted for 60% of the variance. Items that loaded .60 or higher were retained, resulting in a 23-item scale with a Cronbach's a of .96. The ICAS significantly differentiated the communication competencies of beginning and graduating students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. The ICAS was found to have construct validity and internal consistency, underscoring its potential as a formative and summative tool to assess the interpersonal communication competencies of nursing students. ""This paper attempts to demonstrate the psychometric properties and evidence of validity for a measure recently proposed in this journal, the Communication Components Inventory (Keteyian, 2011). Across two studies, a total of 903 undergraduate students completed one of two response formats—dichotomous and scaled—of the CCI and the Multiple Intelligence scale (MIS: Chapman & Chislett, 2005). The dichotomous response format poorly represented the data, as did the scaled response format. However, because of the latter’s superior reliability estimates it was chosen for refinement. Through the use of confirmatory factor analysis, the revised CCI replicated the data accurately. In both data samples, bivariate correlations between the CCI-R and a measure of learning styles were moderate to large, providing initial validity evidence for an important construct to counselors and their clients. Correlates of Communication: An Exploratory Study among Young Adults
Communication is an inseparable, indispensable part of human life, hence, over the years a lot of research has been dedicated to understanding the various factors affecting the complex process of communication. Willingness to Communicate (WTC) and Interpersonal Communication Competence (ICC) are two such important correlates that were initially constructed to understand general communication behavior. But most of the recent research has been in the context of classroom learning and new language acquisition. This study, conducted on 65 males and females in the age group of 18-25 years (young adults), was an attempt to see how Willingness to communicate and Interpersonal Communication Competence are related in the context of general communication. It was found that the groups scoring high and low on WTC had a significant difference in their levels of ICC but no such significant difference was found in the levels of WTC when the groups were divided on the basis of high and low ICC, indicating that people differing in their levels of WTC also differ in their levels of ICC but people with differing levels of ICC need not differ in their levels of WTC.

Communication forms a part of our self-concept, and helps to understand self and others, solve problems and learn new things and build your career. You share meaning in what you say and how you say it, both in oral and written forms. Interpersonal communication skills development has always been an important factor of success personally and professionally, but the influence of globalization and cross-cultural interaction in recent decades has impacted the types of communication skills needed in dramatic ways. Today, people need to understand the dynamics of long-distance collaboration, the impact of culture on manners of speaking and body language, and how to use technology to communicate with people on the other side of the globe. Social media has its place but should never be an exception to replace human contact. While moving forward by accepting the latest technology, it’s time for the generation-next and all of us to bond together at times by turning off our Smart-Phones and Tablets and begin the tradition of face to face communication. Take turns sharing our joys and concerns and practice the forgotten art of conversation. The main requirement is just putting away the cell phones and learn about eye contact, how to listen and how to gather your thoughts and share into complete sentences. Weather it is written or oral, the communication skills require understanding, proper perspective, alertness, and attentiveness to bond together with others with ease and in convincing manner. The Conceptual Domain of Interpersonal Communication Behavior: A Factor-Analytic Study

A provisional taxonomy of interpersonal behavior, ordered as a circumplex, was empirically derived from both the phenomenological and public communication ratings of subjects. At both levels, ratings were most prominently influenced by a Control dimension, made up of the perceptions of socially undesirable behaviors. The circular arrangements of the variables showed that a gap existed in the active and passive affective quadrants. It was suggested that revision of the IBI incorporate the affective dimensions associated with the findings of interpersonal competence research and that communication researchers give appropriate emphasis to the affective domain of interpersonal behavior.
