2016
Tourism has developed as a new form of service industry for alternative and sustainable socio-economic development of a country. Tourism industry has widely implemented Web based Geographic Information System, in order to improve information sharing, monitoring-planning and overall tourism and destination management. Geospatial Mashup is an interactive and collaborative Web 2.0 application that helps in integrating heterogeneous data from various resources to create internet based collaborative geospatial information system. This research paper focuses on the fact that, Geospatial Mashups have a huge potential in the field of tourism marketing and promotion. The current study also highlights on the basic architecture, working principles and effective implementation of Mashup technology in tourism industry. Keywords— GIS, ICT, OGC, Web 2.0
GEOGRAPHICAL COMMUNITIES AND VIRTUAL COMMUNITIES: the web 2.0 in the creation of tourist information
Computational Science and Its Applications – ICCSA 2016, 2016
The diffusion and easy access to geographic and computer equipment has revolutionized not only the models of communication, but also the techniques of production and diffusion of geographic information, combining more and more objective dimension of knowledge with that subjective and perceptive. At the same time, through the Virtual globe (Google Earth, GPS, etc.) or the so-called Volunteered Geographic Information (Wikimapia, Open street map, Google My Maps, etc.) also the spatial dimension of knowledge has found new life in the world of digital communication and Web 2.0. This paper, therefore, part from the theoretical constructs object of the Cybergeography [22], of the Geographical information science [29; 6] or of what many call " Neogeography " or " Geography from below " [44], focusing on new dynamics of interaction between technologies, territories and communities in tourism, or on how the tourist information-which is the basis of the image and attractiveness of a tourist place, and therefore of competitiveness-born more and more by the interaction between the territory and the community in the age of digital communications and social networks. The literature review on issues specifically dealt with, will be accompanied by the presentation of some experiences of Virtual Community particularly significant as a form of representation and self-representation of local tourist systems through a Tourism 2.0.
Web-based GIS in tourism information search: Perceptions, tasks, and trip attributes
Tourism Management, 2011
People's strategies and choices to utilize tourism information have shifted dramatically over the years following ubiquitous access to the Internet. Despite the fact that many tourism information searches on the Internet involve geo-spatial information through WebGIS, little is known about tourists' behavioral patterns with this media. The purpose of this study was to examine tourists' trip situations, tasks, and perceptions toward WebGIS. An electronic survey method and multiple regression technique were used to collect and analyze data. Findings indicate that 'usefulness' and 'playfulness' were the key factors that determined the level of usage and interaction. Users showed distinct behavioral tendencies under different trip situations and task performances when searching tourism information using WebGIS.
Core retail management functions include defining market areas and profiling customers. For tourism enterprises, market areas are geographically dispersed with many customers residing beyond the immediate area surrounding the attraction. Visualization and analysis of these distributed market areas are significantly enhanced by the capabilities of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and help to support management objectives. Unfortunately, many businesses are unable to utilize GIS due to its complexity and expense. This study develops a decision support tool for tourism planning and marketing that is customized and easy to use, employs open source software to reduce expense, and allows for broad accessibility via web delivery. Users can easily visualize and examine the spatial distribution of their own United States (US) client origins and visitation patterns along with relevant tourism-specific and general demographic information. This functionality can be beneficial in developing or augmenting business plans or marketing strategies, and for informing tourism theory.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine factors that affect the likelihood to create travel content online. Research has shown that there are far more people consuming social media than generating it. However, online travel marketers need to pay attention to travelers that share their experiences online, as they have the potential to drive sales. Design/methodology/approach – An online survey was conducted to collect data for this study, by sending e-mail invitations to colleagues, students, personal contacts and other email contacts composed of Portuguese Internet users. A total of 244 complete responses were considered valid to test the hypotheses through partial least squares structural equation modeling. Findings – The results reveal that travelers’ level of involvement with tourism products, innovativeness and use of social media directly influences writing reviews about travel experiences online. Research limitations/implications – First, the data used in this study ...
Building Visual Travel Recommender Systems and Tourism Communities for Effective User Experience
Visual Travel Recommender Systems, Social Communities, and User Interface Design, 2010
Modern information and communication technology (ICT) systems can help us in building travel recommender systems and virtual tourism communities. Tourism ICT systems have come a long way from the early airline ticket booking systems. Travel recommender systems have emerged in recent years, facilitating the task of destination selection as well activities at the destination. A move from purely text-based recommender systems to visual recommender systems is being proposed, which can be facilitated by the use of the Web 2.0 technologies to create virtual travel communities. Delivering a good user experience is important to make these technologies widely accepted and used. This chapter presents an overview of the historical perspective of tourism ICT systems and their current state of development vis-à-vis travel recommender systems and tourism communities. User experience is an important aspect of any ICT system. How to define user experience and measure it through usability testing is...
Analysis of usage of geographic information systems for the participants of tourist travels
Online Journal of Applied Knowledge Management
The main objective of this article is to analyze the usage of geographic information systems (GIS) with regard to tourism. The study has been limited to a select group of individual users. The article presents the characteristics of the systems’ users and their opinions regarding the possibilities and the extent of the use of GIS during individual trips, package tours, and tourist travels. The authors have presented a discussion of the obtained results and have drawn conclusions from the current research.
Geographic Information Portals: Maldives Tourism Perspective
6th International Conference on Advances in Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics (ICAESAM-2016) Dec. 21-22, 2016 Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), 2016
In the era of Web 2.0, Geographic Information Portals (Geoportals) play a dynamic role in customizing online spatial information search and sharing. Geoportals combine the power of Web GIS with the ubiquity of the internet. Tourism industry has widely adopted Web GIS and geoportals in order to improve service management, transparency in information sharing and promotion. This research paper focuses on the fact that, geoportals has a huge potential in the field of tourism management. The present study has been conducted to analyze the current online available information and the tourist inflow for the Republic of Maldives. It discusses about the basic architecture and techniques of providing additional online information using customized geoportals and their potential benefits. The final section of this paper, suggests strategic implementation of geoportals for effective tourism management and promotion in Maldives.
Toward Geospatial Collaborative Tourism Recommender Systems
GIS Applications in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry
Tourism activities are highly dependent on spatial information. Finding the most interesting travel destinations and attractions and planning a trip are still open research issues to GIScience research applied to the tourism domain. Nowadays, huge amounts of information are available over the world wide web that may be useful in planning a visit to destinations and attractions. However, it is often time consuming for a user to select the most interesting destinations and attractions and plan a trip according to his own preferences. Tourism recommender systems (TRSs) can be used to overcome this information overload problem and to propose items taking into account the user preferences. This chapter reviews related topics in tourism recommender systems including different tourism recommendation approaches and user profile representation methods applied in the tourism domain. The authors illustrate the potential of tourism recommender systems as applied to the tourism domain by the imp...
