The present research, based on first-hand data, is intended as a contribution to the study of the present-day diversity of lesser-described Vietnamese dialects, and of the range of evolutionary paths to which they testify. The Vietnamese dialect of the hamlet of Phong Nha (commune of Sơn Trạch, county of Bố Trạch, Quảng Bình) is one of the “heterodox” dialects of Vietnamese, which are known to present considerable interest for the historical study of Vietnamese and of the Vietic group at large. These dialects are the product of the southerly expansion of Vietnamese over related (Vietic) languages, a process which involved various interferences. Comparative evidence reveals strata of standardization: some words are phonologically identical to Standard Vietnamese; others are of Southern Vietic stock, as demonstrated by the absence of telltale historical changes that took place in Vietnamese, such as the spirantization of medial stops; still others appear to be the result of hybridizat...

This article explores the reception and creation of Chinese character variants in Vietnam within a small scale of eight hand-written village customs texts in Bắc Ninh province dating from 1889 to 1915. The article focuses on the four following main issues: (a) the continuance and innovation rate of variants in Vietnam; (b) the method of innovation of variant characters; (c) the behavior of the writers regarding variant characters; (d) supplementing 71 unrecorded variants to dictionaries of variant characters and previous studies.
THE ROLE OF TYPOLOGICAL DRIFT IN THE DEVELOPMENT...
For my family v Acknowledgements I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been influenced by a wide range of academic experiences and would like to thank the people who, over the years, have contributed in some way to the achievement of this goal. First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Brigitte L.M. Bauer. As my dissertation supervisor, she continuously provided thoughtful comments and suggestions, yet always encouraged me to work independently, developing my own hypotheses and reaching my own conclusions. I truly believe this process has been much more meaningful as a result. Brigitte has been incredibly generous with her time, both while in the Netherlands and while in the United States. I am extremely indebted to her for her guidance and support. I would also like to thank my co-supervisor, Frederick Hensey, for his energetic enthusiasm toward my somewhat unconventional topic; it is greatly appreciated. Many thanks also go to Knud Lambrecht, for his attention to detail and constant willingness to provide valuable feedback, and to Chiyo Nishida and Rafael Salaberry, who offered perspectives that were extremely useful during the revision of my final manuscript. Finally, I would like to acknowledge several professors who have made an impact on me over the years. In spite of the vast amount of research on mood in Romance languages, certain fundamental issues are clearly underrepresented, particularly in the field of diachronic linguistics. With this in mind, the primary goal of this dissertation is to provide a comprehensive explanation for developments in Romance mood distribution. Unlike the majority of existing research, this approach does not analyze mood in isolation, nor does it look outward for language-external explanations. Instead, changes in mood usage are related to major typological developments via several interconnected analyses which rely heavily on data from Latin and medieval Spanish and French.
Essays on banks in the emerging and transition economy of Vietnam
2019
The recent internationalization of capitalization
ECLAC Books, 2016
ECLAC aims to provide and facilitate alternative forums for thought and critical thinking in which Latin American academics, economists, politicians and intellectuals can discuss the underpinnings and progress of neostructuralism, heterodox economic currents in Latin America and the Caribbean, and implications for the design, formulation and evaluation of public policies. One of our most cherished aspirations is to share theoretical and conceptual advances in neostructuralism with new generations of economists and political and social scientists, in the hope that they in turn will enrich Latin American development thinking.
The Kháng Language of Vietnam in Comparison to Ksingmul (Xinh-mun
2010
This paper compares two minority languages from northern Vietnam about which very little is known. The aim here is preliminary documentation of some of the very basic features. The Kháng data are based on my own field study and those from Ksingmul and Bumang are taken from sources which are in Russian and Chinese respectively. I have included a relatively rich lexical sample of Kháng and compared items to Ksingmul, Bumang, and other relevant languages. The paper closes with a plot of the tone trajectories of Kháng.
Shift of use of capital (upper case) letters in english and Latvian marketing texts
Eesti Rakenduslingvistika Uhingu Aastaraamat, 2007
This paper is largely observational. It discusses shifts in capitalization practices in marketing texts in Latvian. Two of the observed shifts are changes in accepted Latvian orthography (in Latvian texts) and one is an extension of Latvian changes into English texts written in Latvia. One of the Latvian shifts may be due to external influence and one is from internal sources. These changes are considered as matters of orthographic change, cultural change, the introduction of new (or previously little utilized) communication channels and tools and demonstration of the evolution of new communication rules. The paper provides some hypotheses about what may cause this and makes some observations about what this reflects about culture and language and how these are applied to other languages.

The purpose of this study is to investigate changes in Thai social and cultural values as reflected in the use of the Thai Royal Language (henceforth TRL) in Thai newspapers from the 1930s to the present. The values in focus are those that relate to the role of the monarchy in Thai society. The research method used is content analysis. Approximately 30,000 TRL words used in numerous newspapers in four periods, 1930-35, 1950-56, 1983-86 and 1997-99, were analyzed in order to identify changes of both form and content. The analysis was divided into two sections; namely, TRL verbs and TRL nouns and pronominals (pronouns, titles, kinship terms and names). Each verb, noun or pronominal was categorized and counted. The goal was to find the "hidden messages" that were embedded in the language used. The findings were the following: In the area of TRL verbs we found strong evidence of a process of regularization and simplification taking place, as evidenced by the sharp rise in the use of the prefix ทรง /soΝ/ which seems to become a "general marker" of TRL verbs. Another interesting finding was the emergence of a new vocabulary of royal actions, which describes the King as "trying", "working hard", "explaining", "demonstrating", "being discouraged", "worrying" and many more. In the area of pronominals there was mostly a growing tendency to use elaborate titles and pronouns. For example, there is a rise in the use of พระบาทสมเด็ จพระเจ าอยู หั ว /phra⇔ba⇑adso◊mde⇑dphra⇔ca⇓awju⇑uhu◊a/ versus a decline in the use of ในหลวง /najlu◊aΝ/. In the area of nouns, there was an increase in the usage of nouns that refer to the ceremonial and ritual aspects of kingship, coming at the expense of nouns referring to locations and means of transportation, which were most prominent in the past. One can conclude that the findings point to two contradictory views of the monarchy. On the one hand, we find a new image of kingship that emphasizes the "modern values" of hard work, simplicity, persistence and human sensitivity. The regularization process points to reduced emphasis on intricate social hierarchies. On the other hand, we find increased emphasis on ceremonies, rituals, and elaborate honorific forms of address. These findings point toward a more "traditional" view of the monarchy, a view which also incorporates a perception of a divine element in the person of the king.
