AWARENESS AND USE OF E-RESOURCES IN ABDULLAHI FODIYO LIBRARY COMPLEX AMONG THE ACADEMIC STAFF MEMBERS OF USMANU DANFODIYO UNIVERSITY, SOKOTO

The paper investigated the level of awareness and usage of available electronic information resources in Abdullahi Fodiyo Library Complex and its impact on the teaching and research performances of the academic staff members of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. It examined five faculties namely: Social Sciences, Sciences, Law, Health Sciences and Education. The objective of the paper is to find out the level of awareness on the existing e-resources in the library, e-resources frequently used, level of satisfaction and challenges encountered while using the e-resources. Adaptive structuration theory (AST) of the media was used as the theoretical perspective. Survey technique was used using the questionnaire as instrument which was randomly distributed among respondents in the five faculties. It was concluded that although respondents use e-resources frequently, which is characterised by a number of challenges such as network down time, slow download, and erratic power supply among other challenges. The paper recommended for an inclusion of a specialised online bibliographic database on the library portal, develop adequate awareness programmes to sensitize the academic staff on available e-resources and the existence of a library portal. The paper also suggested user training as well as regular revision of network infrastructure to meet the evergrowing user demand within and outside the institution.

Awareness and Utilization of Electronic Resources by Librarians of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Ogun State, Nigeria

The paper looked at the level of awareness of e-resources and utilization by librarians of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Nigeria. The adoption of e-resources has changed the way the daily routine work is carried out by the librarians to accomplish a variety of functions in the libraries. The instrument used for data collection is a questionnaire which was administered by the researcher to all the 16 professional librarians of the university. The 16 copies of the questionnaire were returned and found usable. The completed questionnaire was analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. Finding from the study revealed that majority of the respondents attested to the availability of internet/e-mail facilities as the most e-resources used by the librarians. Challenges against the usage of electronic resources by librarian were categorized. Recurrent power outages with (38%) topping the list, followed by limited bandwidth (25%), insufficient fund (19%), and inability to download information (12%), and network problems (06%).Furthermore, the e-resources were use for more than one purpose: for in-house official duty and information services to the patrons. Students' Perception, Use and Challenges of Electronic Information Resources in Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun Library in Nigeria

The purpose of this study is to investigate students' perception, use and challenges of electronic information resources in Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. A census sampling technique was used and data was gathered from Two hundred and forty-nine students of 500 level in the Departments in College of Technology. The data gathered were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while regression analysis was used to analyze result of the hypothesis. The result revealed that electronic information resources are used at different level by the respondents with e-journal, e-database, web OPAC and repositories recording high usage. It shows that users' perception influences use of electronic information resources in academic libraries with (β =.214, p<.05). From the findings, it is deduced that users' perception influences use of eresources in academic libraries, while lack of awareness, lack of training, unreliable Internet connectivity, insufficient e-resources in various study areas, unavailability of e-resources on 24/7 and difficulty of identifying relevant information to meet users' needs are challenges hindering use of e-resources. The study concludes that librarians should acquire more eresources to cover various study areas, create more awareness of e-resources at the library to change users' perception and introduce a 24/7 internet services.

Awareness and Use of E-Resources in College Libraries: A Survey

Abstract: Present study is a base on the use of electronic resources by the teachers of various college libraries in Marathwada. This survey was particularly conducted to know the awareness and use of e-resources like E-Journals, E-Books, CD/DVDs, OPAC, E-Databases and Internet etc. in various college libraries of Marathwada. Primary data were collected from 210 respondents with the help of survey. The data were collected with the aid of a questionnaire and analyzed through the use of SSPS and Microsoft Excel. The results indicate that maximum 102 (48.57%) of respondents visited to the library in daily. It was also noticed that maximum 189 (24.60%) of respondents were using E-Journals. Maximum 145 (69.04%) of respondents had excellent knowledge of using e-resources. Majority of 198 (46.47%) respondents were using e-resources for research purpose. Majority 155 (47.11%) of respondents feels that low internet speed is the main problem to access the e-resources

Awareness and utilization of electronic information resources by academic staff in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Library (ATBU) Bauchi, Nigeria

This research examined the awareness and utilization of Electronic Information Resources among the academic staff in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Library (ATBU) Bauchi. The research design adopted in this study is a descriptive survey. Questionnaire was used as instrument for collecting primary data; a total of 100 copies of questionnaire were distributed to the academic staff selected using simple random sampling technique. 94(94.0%) copies of questionnaire were returned. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, frequency counts and percentage while inferential statistics (Pearson Moment Correlation) were used in testing the hypotheses at 0.05 levels of significance. It revealed that the independent variables (Awareness) have statistically significant relationship with the dependent variable (utilization of Electronic Information Resources), in which Awareness at Sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.001 Pearson's r 0.829 and utilization at Sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.001 Pearson's r 0.829. Massive publicity to the user community on the availability of electronic information resources, regular workshops to promote utilization of it, use of newsletters, posters, and flyers should widely be deployed and as well as remote access to electronic information resources.

Availability and accessibility of electronic information resources in federal college of education libraries in Northern Nigeria

The study investigates the availability and accessibility of electronic information resources in federal college of education libraries in Northern Nigeria. The research adopted mixed research methods with a concurrent triangulation research design. The population of the study is 34, 846 library users and 12 college librarians. The sampled respondents were 378 and 9 college librarians. The research used interview and questionnaire for data collections. The data collected were analyzed using thematic analysis and descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study revealed that electronic information resources were found to be available on the platform of e-databases, institutional repository, e-Granary and CDS. Majority of the users had access to e-journal, e-newspapers and audio visual resources available. E-manuscripts, e-dissertations/theses/projects, e-discussion and e-images available were not accessible by majority of the respondents. The libraries had invested in EIRs development and provision of good access is a prerequisite to maximum use of the resources to enhance research, teaching and learning. The study recommended that libraries should acquire resources that are relevant to all users and provide unlimited access remotely, and network facilities should be boosted. Also, training on search skills should be given to enable users have access and use the resources without difficulty. Lastly, the management of the college and their libraries should ensure that all the challenges, such as power outages, denial of access and network fluctuations are minimized in order to encourage access and use of the resources in the libraries.

A Survey of the Use of Electronic Resources in Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria

The paper discussed the impact of electronic information resources as an enabler of research activities in Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was used to survey the opinions of the researchers who are the regular users of the library under study. The study showed various electronic information resources available and the degree of its utilization by the researchers and postgraduate students. There is a significant influence of level of availability of electronic information resources on utilization [F(3,79) = 10,337, P<0.05]. The study also revealed that only 6.0% of respondents use e-resources frequently thus, the usage of e-resources is still very low in the university community. Consequently, it was recommended that the library should organize teaching of information literacy skills through user education programmes.

Categories, Availability and Awareness of Electronic Information Resources by Postgraduate Library Users in South East Nigerian Federal Universities

This paper is an empirical study of concepts and categories of electronic information resources (EIRs); how much of them are available in Nigerian Libraries especially in the South East federal universities. The research design adopted in this study is a descriptive survey. Two complementary instruments were used for collecting primary data; questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The sample size is 120 made up of 30 people comprising librarians/ICT unit heads and PG students were purposively selected for the study. Data collected were analyzed using percentages. 40 EIRs were identified, out of which University of Nigeria (UNN) has a total number of 28 (70%) of the total electronic information resources available in the universities. Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) subscribed 13 (32%). Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka (NAUA) has 11 (27%); while Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) has 6 (15%) of the e-resources in its university library. Though findings reveal that greater number 78 (65%) of postgraduate students from the various universities indicated that they were aware of the available EIRs; whereas the fewer number and percentage 42 (35%) respectively indicated their unawareness; recommendations which include: ICT Infrastructural development, active awareness programme for PG students and Electronic Information literacy programmes are made for improvement.

ACCESS TO E-RESOURCES BY LIBRARIANS IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN NIGER DELTA REGION, NIGERIA

This study investigated Access to Electronic Resources by Librarians in University Libraries in Niger Delta Region, Nigeria. The descriptive research design was adopted for this study using 73 items self-structured questionnaire to collect data. In selecting the university libraries, the researcher applied the stratified random sampling technique to select the universities. One hundred and fifty (150) librarians were selected from three (3) centrally located states which include Delta, Bayelsa, and Edo from the nine (9) Niger Delta States from a target population of four hundred and thirty-two (432) librarians. seven research questions were formulated to guide the study. A reliability coefficient index of 0.87 was obtained from the instrument using Cronbach's Alpha Guttman splithalf Coefficient. Additionally, it was strongly recommended that Institution's authorities and governments should provider internet, ICT facilities for all to enjoy free flow for effective and efficient access to e-resources.

In this stage, it is essential that the right user get right information at right time to make right decision. The information that is not only accurate, timely and relevant but also presented and interpreted in meaningful way. It save the time and also helps in increasing efficiency and utilities of product. When information is generated, It needs to be shared and communication. At this juncture, information resources play very important role to display, communicate and share information. Origin of information sources: The early libraries were defined as an institution that managed and preserved the intellectual sources of society and made then available in a systematic manner to the users who could readily gain access to these resources. Evaluation, growth of internet and e publishing industries in the field of information and communication technology has given birth to electronic resources. Societies are transforming from information societies to knowledge society. Electronic resources play an important role by providing a convenient medium and fast access to the vast range of information. Growth in communication technology, internet and e publishing of scholarly research has opened new vistas in searching and accessing information. An "electronic resource" is defined as any work encoded and made available for access through the use of a computer. It includes electronic data available by (1) remote access and (2) direct access (fixed media). According to Reitz, (2005) electronic resources are materials consisting of data and or computer programs encoding for reading and manipulation by a computer by the use of peripheral device directly connected to the computer or remotely via a network such as a internet. The category includes software application, electronic text, bibliographic databases etc. National institute of pharmaceutical education and research is the first national level institute in pharmaceutical sciences with a proclaimed objective of becoming a centre of excellence for advanced studies and research in pharmaceutical sciences. The library was established in 1992 and it started functioning in 1995. The library is accessible to all pharmacy professionals from the country and abroad and provides information to the academia, researchers and the industry personnel. Library subscribed 19190 bond volume journals, 335 e journals Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe the impact of electronic Information resources on user of NIPER (National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research) Mohali. A questionnaire was used to find the answer of questions about the awareness and usage of e resources among user, to identify the level of satisfaction, to measure the impact of electronic resources and to find out the problems which are faced by the user. The study found that use of e resources was not only affected by low seep of network and reading direct from computer but also lack of enough computers in library and paid access of information. The finding of the study indicated that a lot need to be done to increase the use of e-resource and librarians should reorient themselves, think creatively and adopt the new technology to generate services and resources to increase the use of electronic resources.
