Parental Needs with Respect to Training in School Involvement in Quebec (original) (raw)
2008
Abstract
In this article, we start with a synthesis of the scientific literature on the principal factors explaining the self-exclusion of low-income parents in participation in school life as well as the weak supervision by these parents of the school activities of their children. Secondly, we present some of the results of a Quebec national survey relating to the needs for information and training of the parents of kindergarten to 12th year children in the exercise of parental competences in helping their children learn. After identifying the socio-economic variables as the principal predictors of parents’ decision to request information and training regarding pupils in kindergarten and primary school, we propose various tracks, at once of an organizational and curricular in nature, which could be exploited by the educational milieu in order to restore the school-family-community bond within the most vulnerable populations of Quebec society.
