Self-gravity of brane worlds: a new hierarchy twist

Journal of High Energy Physics, 2001

We examine the inclusion of brane self-gravity in brane-world scenarios with three or more compact extra dimensions. If the brane is a thin, localized one, then we find that the geometry in its vicinity is warped in such a way that gravity on the brane can become very weak, independently of the volume of the extra dimensions. As a consequence, self-gravity can make the brane structure enter into the determination of the hierarchy between the Planck scale and a lower fundamental scale. In an extreme case, one can obtain a novel reformulation of the hierarchy problem in brane worlds, without the need for large-size extra dimensions; the hierarchy would be generated when the ratio between the scales of brane tension and brane thickness is large. In a sense, such a scenario is half-way between the one of Arkani-Hamed et al. (ADD) (although with TeV-mass Kaluza-Klein states) and that of Randall and Sundrum (RS1) (but with only a TeV brane, and of positive tension). We discuss in detail the propagation of fields in the background of this geometry, and find that no problems appear even if the brane is taken to be very thin. We also discuss the presence of black branes and black holes in this setting, and the possibility of having a Planck brane.

Global structure of exact cosmological solutions in the brane world

Physical Review D, 2000

We find the explicit coordinate transformation which links two exact cosmological solutions of the brane world which have been recently discovered. This means that both solutions are exactly the same with each other. One of two solutions is described by the motion of a domain wall in the well-known 5-dimensional Schwarzshild-AdS spacetime. Hence, we can easily understand the region covered by the coordinate used by another solution.

Domain wall dynamics in brane world and nonsingular cosmological models

Physical Review D, 2004

We study brane cosmology as 4D (4-dimensional) domain wall dynamics in 5D bulk spacetime. For a generic 5D bulk with 3D maximal symmetry, we derive the equation of motion of a domain wall and find that it depends on mass function of the bulk spacetime and the energy-momentum conservation in a domain wall is affected by a lapse function in the bulk. Especially, for a bulk spacetime with non-trivial lapse function, energy of matter field on the domain wall goes out or comes in from the bulk spacetime. Applying our result to the case with SU(2) gauge bulk field, we obtain a singularity-free universe in brane world scenario, that is, not only a big bang initial singularity of the brane is avoided but also a singularity in a 5D bulk does not exist.

Randall-Sundrum I cosmology as brane dynamics in an AdS-Schwarzschild bulk

Physical Review D, 2002

We explore various facets of the cosmology of the Randall-Sundrum scenario with two branes by considering the dynamics of the branes moving in a bulk AdS/Schwarzschild geometry. This approach allows us both to understand in more detail and from a different perspective the role of the stabilization of the hierarchy in the brane cosmology, as well as to extend to the situation where the metric contains a horizon. In particular, we explicitly determine how the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism perturbs the background bulk geometry to produce a realistic cosmology.

On new gravitational instantons describing creation of braneworlds

Classical and Quantum Gravity, 2002

By considering 5-dimensional cosmological models with a bulk filled with a pressureless scalar field; equivalently dust matter, and a negative cosmological constant, we have found a regular instantonic solution which is free from any singularity at the origin of the extra-coordinate. This instanton describes 5-dimensional asymptotically anti de Sitter wormhole, when the bulk has a topology R × S 4 . Compactified brane-world instantons which are built up from such instantonic solution describe either a single brane or a string of branes. Their analytical continuation to the pseudo-Riemannian metric can give rise to either 4-dimensional inflating branes or solutions with the same dynamical behaviour for extra-dimension and branes, in addition to multitemporal solutions. Dust brane-world models with arbitrary dimensions (D ≥ 5) as well as other spatial topologies are also briefly discussed.

Null fluid collapse in brane world models

Physical Review D, 2014

The brane world description of our universe entails a large extra dimension and a fundamental scale of gravity that may be lower than the Planck scale by several orders of magnitude. An interesting consequence of this scenario occurs in the nature of spherically-symmetric vacuum solutions to the brane gravitational field equations, which often have properties quite distinct from the standard black hole solutions of general relativity. In this paper, the spherically-symmetric collapse on the brane world of four types of null fluid, governed by the barotropic, polytropic, strange quark "bag" model and Hagedorn equations of state, is investigated. In each case, we solve the approximate gravitational field equations, obtained in the high density limit, determine the equation which governs the formation of apparent horizons and investigate the conditions for the formation of naked singularities. Though, naively, one would expect the increased effective energy density on the brane to favor the formation of black holes over naked singularities, we find that, for the types of fluid considered, this is not the case. However, the black hole solutions differ substantially from their general-relativistic counterparts and brane world corrections often play a role analogous to charge in general relativity. As an astrophysical application of this work, the possibility that energy emission from a Hagedorn fluid collapsing to form a naked singularity may be a source of GRBs in the brane world is also considered.

Localizing gravity on exotic thick 3-branes

Physical Review D, 2004

We consider localization of gravity on thick branes with a non trivial structure. Double walls that generalize the thick Randall-Sundrum solution, and asymmetric walls that arise from a Z2symmetric scalar potential, are considered. We present a new asymmetric solution: a thick brane interpolating between two AdS5 spacetimes with different cosmological constants, which can be derived from a "fake supergravity" superpotential, and show that it is possible to confine gravity on such branes.

Static domain wall in braneworld gravity

In this paper we consider a static domain wall inside a 3-brane. Different from the standard achievement obtained in General Relativity, the analysis performed here gives a consistency condition for the existence of static domain walls in a braneworld gravitational scenario. Also the behavior of the domain wall's gravitational field in the newtonian limit is shown.

Extra-dimensional cosmology with domain-wall branes

Journal of High Energy Physics, 2009

We show how to define a consistent braneworld cosmology in a model in which the brane is constructed as a field-theoretic domain wall of finite thickness. The Friedmann, Robertson-Walker metric is recovered in the region of the brane, but, remarkably, with scale factor that depends on particle energy and on particle species, constituting a breakdown of the weak equivalence principle on sufficiently small scales. This unusual effect comes from the extended nature of particles confined to a domain-wall brane, and the fact that they feel an "average" of the bulk spacetime. We demonstrate how to recover the standard results of brane cosmology in the infinitely-thin brane limit, and comment on how our results have the potential to place bounds on parameters such as the thickness of domain-wall braneworlds.
