Information Communication Technology is those inventions which facilitate easy and speedy dissemination and retrieval of information on a large scale. These include radio, television, cable satellite, computer, telephone, Fax machines, and Internet. The various Information Communication Technologies can be used to encompass all forms of technology used in the process of acquiring, storing, processing, and distributing information by electronic means. This paper has conducted survey on Information Communication Technology in selected tertiary institutions’ libraries in Kaduna state-Nigeria. Recommendations for functional I.C.T. use in tertiary institutions’ libraries in Kaduna state-Nigeria have also been given.

The Impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Nigerian University Libraries
2010
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has brought unprecedented changes and transformation to academic libraries and information services. Taking into cognizance the recent trends in ICT and the Nigerian situation, this work elicits the impact of ICT in Nigerian University Libraries. The primary objectives were to ascertain the level of automation; to determine the usefulness of ICT resources; the effectiveness of ICT resources; the required skills in using ICT resources and the factors militating against the effective use of ICT. John Harris Library, University of Benin and Benson Idahosa University Library, both in Edo State of Nigeria were used as case study. The survey research design was employed and the instrument used for data collection was the Questionnaire. Simple tables and percentages were used to analyze the data collected. The research work revealed that both University Libraries are automated/computerized and that they apply Strategic Library Automation Management (SLAM); only three divisions of the libraries are computerized/automated which are Readers Services Division, Technical Services Division and Collection Development division; the major reason attached to the use of ICT resources was for information storage and retrieval; the ICT resources mostly used are CD-ROM, online database, World Wide Web and the Internet. The study also revealed that ICT has an enormous impact based on its effectiveness. Inadequate training and retraining of staff by management; inadequate funding, epileptic power supply and lack of search skills are the major factors militating against the effective use of ICT in Nigerian University libraries. Amongst others, inadequate funding, capacity building, regular power supply were recommended.
Purpose: This study investigates the ICT application in libraries services: a comparative study of two Nigerian University libraries. Design/Methodology/Approach: Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and the population consisted of 100 undergraduate students who used the ICT facilities in the library from University of Ibadan and University of Lagos respectively. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select 50 respondents each from University of Ibadan and University of Lagos. The questionnaire and interview checklist was the main instruments used for data collection. Data was analyzed using single percentage. Findings: The findings revealed that Internet 33.0%, computers 40.0%, printers 20.0% were some of the ICT facilities available in both university libraries. The respondents also indicated that ICT have benefit with great extent in the way library services are discharged. The Internet facilities were used on daily basis 30.0%; computers 22.0% were used on weekly basis while multimedia projector 19.0% was used twice a week. Librarians interviewed lamented that ICT application has helped them immensely on the way their duties were discharge to library users, they also cemented that OPAC has help library users to search and retrieve information needed for their studies. Implication: The study concluded that in other for any academic libraries to compete with counterpart globally, ICT must be employed and applied in every sphere of librarianship. Librarians in both university libraries lamented that ICT has replaced the way their duties were discharged to users Originality/Value: Librarians should be given thorough training and retraining exercise on emerging trend in technologies, there should be technological infrastructure that will enhance library services.

Nigerian libraries have added value to the services they provide through information and communication technology (ICT). This study used a survey research method on the use of ICT in Nigerian libraries: a case study of the Kwara State University library. The respondents were students and faculty members from the university. The results show that the Kwara State University library has an abundance of computers connected to the Internet using the Millennium web program. Students and Faculty Members Use Online Public Access (OPAC) to Iron out Material on Shelves. The study reveals several reasons for the use of the Internet by participating faculty and students. But the least use of ICT has been electronic databases. The faculty members surveyed with the highest frequency were of those, 50 (83%) use the Internet to update knowledge, while the highest respondents 179 students (66%) use the Internet to complete projects. However, proper training of library staff will increase the use of electronic databases.

This research work dealt on "Situational Analysis of ICT Applications in Colleges of Education libraries in Nigeria". The purpose of the study is to find out the challenges of applying ICT in library functions and to examine the benefits of applying ICT in library functions. A survey research design was used for this study. The researcher made use of purposive sampling technique to select fifty respondents from (300) three hundred library staff of colleges of education in south eastern Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique was adopted because the respondents are few and have the same features, for instance, the respondents work in college library. The instrument for data collection is the questionnaire which has thirty (30) items designed to obtain information on ICT application in colleges of education libraries. The mean statistics was used to analyze the data collected. The findings of the study showed that lack of ICT personnel, lack of standardization, lack of library software to mention but a few are some of the challenges of applying ICT in library functions. The paper also listed some of the benefits of applying ICT to library functions such as low cost of processing materials, speed and accuracy of information, better service at lower cost, influences accessibility of information acquisition of knowledge and skills etc. The paper concluded that Government should employ ICT personnel and experts in our libraries to handle the integration and at the same time provide in-service training and retraining for library staffs on a regular basis as measures to ICT application in Colleges of education libraries.

Challenges identified includes lack of ICT skills, economic barriers(fund), inadequate space to accommodate many users, poor power supply, in adequate ICT resources, lack of...
ENHANCING LIBRARY OPERATIONS THROUGH THE USE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Although information is being considered as a cultural and social asset, it is a remarkable development that it is now being purchased at high prices. Making these enormous libraries and archives available in a clear and organized manner by using the proper technologies is currently the greatest challenge for all those involved in knowledge management. This paper highlights the strategies for enhancing the performance of library operations through the use of appropriate modern information technology by reviewing the Information Technology (IT) implementation in Nigerian Library, application of modern technology in libraries of information age and strategies by which appropriate technology could be adopted in Nigerian library. Introduction Libraries have provided information services to support the educational, recreational, cultural, economic and technological endeavours over the years. The National Policy on Education (2004) identified the library as one of the most important aspects of educational support services. It is a medium for disseminating information and enhancing literature search and as a tool for the development of intellectual compatibilities and promotion of cultural and social integration. IT offers a wide range of opportunities, which could provide solutions to some of the major challenges of library operation. Rapid advances in modern technologies have greatly improved the capabilities of storage, processing, retrieval, repackaging, communicating, sharing, and managing the explosive growth of information effectively and economically in libraries. The use of IT in libraries has become inevitable in an era of information explosion and the emergence of a wide range of new technologies in order to satisfy the changing complex information needs of users.
