Estudio pragmatico del componente fonoprosodico en la conversación coloquial: de la fonopragmática a la fono(des)cortesía (original) (raw)

The present study has a dual objective: on the one hand, to justify the relevance of the prosodic component in considering various pragmatic effects in casual conversation; on the other hand, to focus the description of these prosodically-based pragmatic effects in the realm of (im)politeness. For example, vocalic lengthening at the end of a given word not only represents a form of expressive hesitation by the speaker, as it can also function as a pragmatic resource to «suggest» something to the listener or to prevent the speaker from appearing too «assertive»; thus, the pragmatic effect of this lengthening (prosodic phenomenon) will be oriented toward verbal politeness. Methodologically, we begin with the existence of three components in the prosodic domain: the segmental (phonemes and allophones), the suprasegmental (stress, intonation, and duration, which overlap with complex phonetic units such as the syllable, word, phrase, or sentence), and the paralinguistic (non-systematic phonetic phenomena derived from anatomical alterations in the oral, nasal, and pharyngeal cavities).
