Opportunities and Constraints of Organic Agriculture in Chiang Mai Province

2013

The application of chemicals in conventional agriculture to increase productivity can result in environmental degradation, bring about economic problems and cause harmful effects on farmers, labourers and consumers. Responding to these problems, a number of nongovernmental organizations and government agencies have been promoting organic agriculture in the province of Chiang Mai in order to assure food safety and at the same time alleviate the poverty of farmers. The present study discusses the organic agriculture movement in Chiang Mai and compares organic agriculture with conventional agriculture in terms of yields, socio-economic considerations and human health aspects. The findings show that organic agriculture could generate significant benefits. However, constraints inherent to organic farming practices and other factors, including off-farm works and perceptions of organic agriculture, complicate the process of organic certification and standards, and to some extent weaken ext...

Further analysis on Organic agriculture and organic farming in case of Thailand agriculture and enhancing farmer productivity

The objective of this paper is to present Further analysis on Organic agriculture and organic farming in case of Thailand agriculture and enhancing farmer productivity. In view of the demand for organic fertilizers, efforts should also be made to enhance and to develop more effective of compost, biofertilizer, and bio-pesticides currently used by farmers. Likewise, emphasis should also be laid on the cultivation of legumes and other crops that can enhance the fertility of the soil, as practiced by farmers in many developing countries to fertilize their lands. On the other hand, most of the farmers who practice this farm system found that they are adopting a number of SLMs and interested in joining the meeting or training to gain more and more knowledge.

Towards Organic Vegetable Farming in Mahasarakham Province, Thailand

Journal of Sustainable Agriculture, 2009

The government of Thailand has been implementing organic vegetable promotion programs and projects since the late 1990s under the broad policy of sustainable agricultural development. Based on primarily secondary information and some primary information collected through a household survey conducted in four districts of the Mahasarakham province, this study revealed little progress, despite promotion of organic vegetables through several government and non-government organizations. Slightly more than half of the officially designated organic vegetable farmers were genuine organic farmers, while others were mixed vegetable farmers who used both organic and inorganic inputs. There was variation in the intensity of organic vegetable farming from one district to another due primarily to variation in soil suitability, availability of irrigation water and external support. Major policy implications of the findings of the research are outlined. Policy recommendations have been made for promotion of organic vegetable farming.

Measurable Impacts of the “Principles of Organic Agriculture”; Survey of a Vietnamese Organic PGS

A farmers' survey within the Organic Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) in Soc Son, Hanoi, Vietnam, indicates that farmers are largely satisfied with the management schemes and farming systems but that they feel there is room for improvement. Farmers gave a high score for questions related to the organic principles of health (74%), ecology (79%), fairness (68%), and care (71%). These results are outlined and the case is made that the organic principles are measurable and comparable. It is further argued that with a quantifiable measurement of the functioning of organic systems from the farmer we may find more ways to promote and help shape the future of the movement according to the principles.

Adoption and extent of organic vegetable farming in Mahasarakham province, Thailand

Applied Geography, 2011

Consistent with the national policy of sustainable agriculture promotion, the Government of Thailand has implemented organic vegetable farming (OVF) pilot projects in several provinces. This study analyzed the level of adoption and extent of OVF at farm household level in Mahasarakham Province based on information collected from 172 sample vegetable farmers. The results have indicated that slightly more than half of the sample farmers were growing organic vegetables, although the extent of the area under organic vegetables varied from one farm household to another. The result of the Logistic Regression analysis performed to find out the factors that determine the adoption of OVF, found significant influence of several factors including women's leading role in OVF, motivation by GOs and NGOs, motivation by community members and farmers' groups, attendance in training, satisfaction with the price of organic vegetables, and the intensity of pest hazard. Moreover, the Linear Regression analysis carried out to explore the determinants of the extent of OVF at farm household level revealed three significantly influencing factors, namely: the amount of organic fertilizers such as farm yard manure and compost produced by farmers themselves, perception of the harmful effect of inorganic pesticides and the length of experience in growing vegetables. Explanations are provided for the role of these factors in the level of adoption and extent of OVF, and broad policy instruments conducive to the promotion of OVF in an effective way, are suggested.

Factors Influencing the Potential for Organic Agriculture of Phra Thaen Subdistrict Municipality, Tha Maka District, Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand

Universal Journal of Agricultural Research, 2023

The purposes of the research were to analyze the potential and factors affecting the organic agriculture potential of farmers in Phra Thaen subdistrict municipality, Tha Maka district, Kanchanaburi province. The data were collected from 389 persons of organic farmers, community leaders, community development officers, technical officers, and officers of the public and private sectors. The research used mixed methods, consisting of quantitative research combined with qualitative data, quantitative data analysis by descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression, and content analysis for qualitative data. The results found that the potential of organic agriculture of Phra Thaen Subdistrict Municipality in overall and individual aspects was at a high level, consisting of the potential of infrastructure, society and culture, economy, natural resources, and human resources, consistent with SWOT analysis. It found that the apparent potential of organic agriculture was the organic agriculture market for farmers in the community. The community was the way to the regional and national market; the irrigation system covered all areas; local scholars had knowledge and ability in organic agriculture, and community leaders focused on organic agriculture, including establishing an organic agriculture group, Phra Thaen Model Organic Agriculture. Factors affecting the organic agriculture potential of farmers in Phra Thaen subdistrict municipality were found that seven variables were leadership (X5), grouping (X6), agricultural area (X7), farming experience (X12), working capital (X4), expenditure (X3), and income (X2). It could explain the potential of organic agriculture at 77.9% with the multiple correlation coefficients (R) = 0.882, which can be written as a standard score equation: Ẑy = 0.427ZX5 + 0.251ZX6 - 0.159ZX7 + 0.157ZX12 + 0.173ZX4 - 0.124ZX3 + 0.777ZX2 (1)

Organic food s consumer in thailand

In response to food scares related to high levels of pesticide residues sometimes found on vegetables and fruits, consumers in Thailand increasingly demand 'safe' foods. This has resulted in a number of initiatives and labels indicating 'pesticide safe' vegetables. However, the pesticide-residue problem has proved enduring. This opens a market opportunity for organic foods, which are produced entirely without using synthetic chemicals. As little is known on consumer perception of organic foods in Thailand, a survey was conducted in Bangkok. More than a third of the 848 respondents reported having purchased organic vegetables or fruits in the past. The main reasons for purchasing organic products are that consumers expect them to be healthier, that organic products are environmentally friendly. The respondents who have bought organic vegetables tend to be older, have a higher education level and a higher family income than those who have not bought them. The main barrier to increasing the market share of organic vegetables is that consumers do not clearly differentiate between the various 'pesticide safe' labels and the organic labels. Informing consumers about unique characteristics of organic production methods, the strict inspection and required third party certification might be a promising strategy to develop the market for organic vegetables in Thailand's urban centers.

Motivation toward the extension of organic rice production in Northeast Thailand

Pressacademia

Purpose-Organic rice growers have continued their lives and organic agriculture way of production firmly, although there is a common way of rice production by using chemical fertilizers and pesticides in Thailand. Movtivation of these organic growers will be explored for concerned organizations to encourage more organic production in the country. Surin and Yasothon provinces were the study area as there is a large number of organic rice production in these 2 provinces. Methodology-Descriptive and quantitative analysis by Multiple regression analysis are applied. Findings-The results showed that the most influential factors that motivated organic production was due to farmer's opinion that organic agriculture is the way of sustainable production mode, a good relationship within the household and no excessive resources compared with chemicals. In addition, government support, health concern, organic being the new production trend, and cost reduction were also statistically significant factors. Conclusion-Facilitation from concerned organizations to motivate farmers to extend their production area from these factors are recommended.
