AimTo report the most common terminology used in titles of scientific papers published in the International Endodontic Journal (IEJ) and Journal of Endodontics (JOE) between 1980 and 2019 and to identify the most‐cited papers in these journals.MethodologyThe Web of Science database was searched to retrieve all the manuscripts published in the IEJ and JOE between 1980 and 2019. The articles were analysed using the VOS viewer software and the terms within the titles extracted. The top‐10 terms were categorized according to the number of occurrences and the decade of publication. Maps were created using the text data for each decade of publication. Classic papers were identified when the number of citations was >400. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to identify the 100 top-cited articles published in journals dedicated to endodontology and analyze their characteristics to describe the quality and evolution of research in the field of endodontology. Methods: The Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge Database and the Journal Citation Report Science Editions were used to retrieve the 100 most cited articles published in journals dedicated to endodontics. The top-cited articles were selected and analyzed with regard to journals, authors, institution, country of origin, publication title and year, number of citations, article type, study design, level of evidence, and field of study. Results: The top 100 articles were cited between 87 and 554 times. These articles appeared in 4 different journals, with more than half in the Journal of Endodontics, followed by the journals Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology and Endodontology, the International Endodontic Journal, and Endodontics & Dental Traumatology. Forty-eight articles were published between 1990 and 1999. All articles were published in English and primarily originated from the United States (n = 52). The majority of articles were basic science articles (n = 55), followed by clinical research studies (n = 28) and nonsystematic reviews (n = 17). Uncontrolled case series with level IV of evidence and narrative reviews with level V of evidence were the most frequent types of study design. The main topics covered by the top-cited articles were microleakage and endodontic microbiology. Conclusions: This analysis of citation rates reveals useful and interesting information about scientific progress in the field of endodontics. Basic research and observational studies published in highimpact endodontic journals had the highest citation rates. (J Endod 2011;37:1183-1190
Endodontic therapy in primary teeth: a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most-cited papers

The purpose of this review was to identify and analyze the main characteristics of the 100 most-cited papers in the field of endodontic therapy in primary teeth. A search for the most-cited articles was conducted in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science 'Core-Collection' (WoS-CC) database up to December 2020. Papers were ranked in descending order, by number of citations, and each paper was matched with the citation count on Scopus and Google Scholar. Two independent reviewers selected the most-cited papers and analyzed it according to the number and density of citations, year and journal of publication, authors, countries and contributing institutions, study design, topic of the paper, and keywords. Spearman's correlation and Poisson regression were used to determine associations between the number of citations and study characteristics. The citation count varied from 15 to 135 (WoS-CC), 8 to 141 (Scopus), and 14 to 317 (Google Scholar). Of the 306 contributing authors, most paper contributions were from Sakai VT, Oliveira TM, and Machado MAAM (5 each). Most of the papers originated from the USA (n=21) and Brazil (n=18). Randomized trials were the most common study design (n=32), and "pulpotomy" was the most frequently used keyword (n=35). Poisson regression showed that the number of citations decreased by 1.5% each year, and increased by 9.7% for each unit of impact factor. This bibliometric analysis highlighted papers, authors, and institutions that have contributed to endodontic therapy in primary teeth. Common terms of interest in this research area was also identified, representing the first bibliometric analysis on this subject.
Published Endodontic Articles in Pubmed-Indexed Journals from Iran (Editorial)

The aim of this survey was to illustrate statistical information about endodontic research published in pubmed index journals from the different universities of Iran. Materials and Methods: A PubMed search was performed to retrieve the endodontic publications of authors affiliated to different universities of Iran. Abstracts were reviewed and unrelated articles were omitted. Citation of each article was obtained from Scopus and Google scholar databases. Data were extracted and transferred to Microsoft Excel to determine the related scintometric indicators. Results: A total of 307 papers were found according to the defined criteria which shows considerable increase from 2 papers in 1992 to 54 in 2011. The majority of the papers (48%) were related to in vitro studies; this number was 33% for in vivo surveys. Meta-analysis, systematic review and clinical trial constituted 10% of all publications. The average number of authors for the overall publications was 3.84; majority of articles (20%) were written by three authors. The average number of citation from Google Scholar (8.93) was higher than those from Scopus (4.74). Most of the endodontic articles originated from the Mashad University of Medical Sciences (16%). Conclusion: Endodontic publication from different universities in Iran has considerably increased, showing that research is becoming more important.

Background. Citation analysis has emerged to play a significant role in recognition of the most useful areas of research. Perfil da produção científica em endodontia em periódicos de alto impacto

Objective: To characterize the profi le of scientifi c production in the fi eld of endodontics in high-impact journals. Methods: Articles were evaluated. Various aspects were assessed: type of article, authors' geographic origin, changes in the profi le of papers over the studied period (in terms of country of origin and type of article), and ratio between budget for science/technology and number of publications. Results: A total of 3,993 articles were published in the 10-year period assessed. Basic research articles accounted for 67.85% of the production, compared to 1.35% of systematic reviews/meta-analyses. The U.S. ranked fi rst in number of publications (23.69%), followed by Brazil (14.22%) and China (6.42%). Despite the low investments made in science, the emerging countries Brazil, China, and Turkey were able to fi gure among the top fi ve countries in number of publications, especially as a result of increasing numbers of articles in the latest years. Conclusion: Emerging countries are investing increasing amounts in science and technology, which has allowed for a large number of publications in high-impact journals.
High-level evidences in endodontics

Number of published medical/dental articles is growing at an exponential rate; this makes it difficult to collect all these resources and provide an organized and valuable/ useful document. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses as high-level evidences are considered remedies for this concern. Continuous alterations in all fields of dental sciences necessitate the more of such high-level evidences. This study aimed on the quantity of endodontic systematic reviews and meta-analyses so far. This study began with targeted electronic searches of PubMed, and Cochrane library databases about the present systematic review and meta-analysis articles in endodontics within 2001-Jan 2012. Overall, 49 studies were systematic review and meta-analysis, the first comprised 34 articles and the latter contained seven articles; the remained eight studies had utilized both of them. Performing a topic sorting, 22 articles were about materials and techniques, 12 about pre-and post-treatment considerations, four about single/multiple visits, six with perio-prostho themes, and the five remained were of other topics. Limited number of 49 high-level evidences does not meet the expectation from endodontics as a boundless and progressive field of science. Therefore, more comprehensive and all-inclusive studies of systematic reviews and meta-analyses are compulsory in endodontics. The more the scientific-based endodontic practice, the more the high-level evidence based publications with good systematic reviews and favorable meta-analysis.

Settings and Designs: A retrospective observational study was conducted for IEJ and JOE. Subjects and Methods: All issues of IEJ and JOE were electronically and hand searched for the following parameters: Amount of papers, publication year, affiliated organizations, and countries. Statistical Analysis Used: The data were organized and analyzed using software SPSS version 21.0; descriptive statistics was used. Results: A total of 872 articles were analyzed in the IEJ and JOE with 1606 papers. Brazil had the largest number of articles (170) mainly in IEJ, and the USA (350) in JOE. Indians published more of their research in JOE than IEJ. Conclusions: Original articles in endodontic publication from different universities in India have considerably increased, showing that research is becoming more important.
