Major part of Lithuania is sparsely populated, thus the purpose of complex analysis is to evaluate, how the decreasing of the density of residents influences economy, what are the features of economic activity, farming, recreation and tourism, what difficulties arise lining in this territory. In 2012-2013, in the Lithuanian Social Research Centre, scientific research project "Lietuvos retai apgyventos teritorijos ir jų gyventojai" ("Sparsely populated areas of Lithuania and its residents") was carried out. In the monography, part of the material, which was collected and summarized during this research, is presented. The main period of analysis includes a decade of population census between 2001 and 20011. The problem of sparsely populated areas is analysed starting with the review of wide European context and continuing with the level of the territory, municipality and eldership of Lithuania. The main method of the research – complex sociogeographical analysis, where qualitative and quantitative methods are applied integrated. Monography consists of six parts. In the first parts, it is discussed, what is considered sparsely populated territory; the tendencies of depopulation are reviewed. The demographic state of the residents of Lithuania and its tendencies of changing are analysed in detail. The fifth part is for the changing of the system of settlements. The broadest – the sixth part, where the social economic features are analysed. The book is not only for geographers, but also for the scientists, students of other scientific fields and for all, who are interested in geographic, demographic, social and economic development of Lithuania
