XVII European Symposium on Languages for …, 2009
The communicative needs of aviation English users are probably more strictly defi ned than user needs in any other domain of English for Specifi c Purposes (ESP) today. We can hardly imagine any other professional environment in which language plays such a crucial role in ensuring regular and safe day-to-day business. Although English is not offi cially prescribed as the only language used in the international aviation community, it formally assumed that role fi ve years ago with the introduction of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) English language profi ciency requirements (LPRs), which have not only set higher standards in the fi eld of aviation English but also triggered numerous initiatives for the analysis of user needs and application of new teaching methods and instruments tailored to meet the required level of English and associated language competences.
The current paper offers a detailed analysis of a small corpus of 80 terms used in air traffic and aviation in English with their Romanian equivalents. The analysis starts from the word formation patterns of these terms and tries to identify any corresponding patterns in the target language, i.e. Romanian. Our analysis makes use of newer terminological concepts that have been paid lesser attention so far due to the lack of competing terminology theories as well as due to the lack of typologies of the causes of certain terminological phenomena. One such phenomenon that is discussed here is denominative variation which can help explain certain cases of synonymy in specialized language (e.g. rudder = direcţie, cârmă), whose existence the traditional theory of terminology used to dismiss.
The Evolution of Aviation Terminology: A Historical Analysis
Foreign Languages in Uzbekistan
This article provides a historical analysis of the changes in aviation terminology over time, highlighting the factors that have influenced its evolution. Furthermore, changes in aviation practices and regulations have also contributed to the evolution of aviation terminology. The increasing focus on safety and the need for clear communications in aviation has led to the development of standardized phraseology, such as the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet (IRSA) and International Civil Aviation Phraseology (ICAP). It is proven that aviation terminology has been a result of various factors, including technological advancements, standardization efforts, changing practices, and the global nature of the industry. In addition, it emphasizes that understanding the historical development of aviation terminology provides valuable insights into the growth of aviation as a field and the need for effective communication in this highly specialized domain.
AVIATION ENGLISH AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN INTERNATIONAL AVIATION SYSTEM
Since there have been quite a few plane crashes, midair collisions, and various problems due to the misunderstanding of the language and commands from the towers, air traffic controllers, at airports, during the great expansion of air traffic starting from the twentieth century, the urgent need for a simple, innovative, and easy to understand language and a codified set of rules was undeniable.
Aeronautical Meteorology in Aeronautical Language and in Aviation Language: a hybrid field?
The ESPecialist, 2020
Although Aeronautical Meteorology language is not generally regarded as standard communication between air traffic controllers and pilots, it plays an important role in Air Traffic Control (ATC) communication since it comprises phraseology and plain language used to communicate weather phenomena which interfere in aviation operations. Then, this paper focuses on the meteorology terminology used by Brazilian experts and discusses whether Aeronautical Meteorology is a hybrid field. Based on the theory of lexical semantics for terminology proposed by L’Homme (2020), the syntactic and semantic properties of a small set of Portuguese terms were analyzed in two separate textual corpora, i.e. a corpus representative of Aviation language and a corpus representative of Aeronautical language. For that, the combinatorics of terms were examined by means of a concordancing tool and were categorized by means of semantic labels. Quantification and comparison of the results obtained seem to suggest that the behavior of the terms in the two corpora share a fair amount of similarities.

The article focuses on the problem of successful communication in the course of military translation. The significant part of this process is a translation of numerous military terms, acronyms, and abbreviations where a translator must consider the context of the military document to ensure the right translation, which is as close as possible to the original text meaning. The research is based on the method of scientific observation during the classes and practical exercises in cooperation with NATO officers, the descriptive method, the method of comparison, which was used in the analysis of many textbooks and scientific articles. The use of the specific method of distributive analysis allowed the consideration of the context-dependent military terms and abbreviations. This paper presents the results of the research, including, in particular, the outlining of the classification of military terms and abbreviations, accentuation on the skills and knowledge which are important for prod...
Terminology of Aeronautical Meteorology Codes: a systematization by using corpus
TradTerm, 2021
Standardizing terminology is very important to maintain the accuracy of information being disseminated, mainly in specialized fields such as Aeronautical Meteorology. Based on terminology (PAVEL; NOLET 2001; CABRÉ 1999 AND 2003) and corpora (SANTOS 2008 AND 2014; TOGNINI-BONELLI 2011) theoretical foundations, definitions and translation to Portuguese of expressions and terms contained in the Table 4678, concerning the main meteorology codes, as prescribed by the World Meteorological Organization (2011), were discussed. As a result, a systematization for terminological procedures is proposed, by using corpora with set validation standards. In this way, this paper intends to contribute to avoid misunderstandings regarding the criticality level of meteorological situations being communicated during air traffic operations.
