Modelling and simulation of hybrid electric ships with DC distribution systems
2013 15th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE), 2013
DC power system in ship applications is an emerging technology, which provides new opportunities for reducing fuel consumption and emission. However, the resulted power electronic-based system onboard the ship requires effective analysis tools to facilitate a full-realization of the advantages. This paper reviews the modelling of hybrid electric ship components including mechanical and electrical elements. Power electronic converters are modeled by nonlinear averaging methods to suit system-level studies. A unified model for bidirectional converters is proposed to avoid transitions between two separate models. A simulation platform using the derived models is developed for system-level analysis of hybrid electric ships. Simulation results of a hybrid electric ship with two diesel generators, a fuel cell, and an energy storage module are presented for different modes of operation.
Performance Prediction and Dynamic Simulation of Electric Ship Hybrid Power System
2007 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium, 2007
A hybrid power system for future electric ship is developed in the Virtual Test Bed (VTB) computational environment for the system-level performance prediction and dynamic investigation. The power system consists of a propulsion plant and a hybrid engine subsystem. Important system components such as the compressor, gas turbine, propeller and ship are described in detail and modeled in the VTB. A physicsbased one-dimensional Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) model is introduced here specifically for higher power density and better performance. To evaluate system-level performance both statically and dynamically, the following two investigations are carried out: 1) steady-state performance of power system; 2) the transient behavior of the system under a variety of operating conditions. Simulation results show that the hybrid power system could achieve a 68% total electrical efficiency (LHV) and an electrical power output of 1.66MW, around 30% of which is produced by the power turbine while 70% is generated in SOFC stacks.
Modelling of DC Shipboard Power System
—Modelling and simulation of emerging DC shipboard power system (SPS) is required to validate the hardware design, converter control and protection algorithms. As DC SPSs may be large and complicated, the simulation of such systems using high fidelity models generally consumes much time and the validation of performance using multiple test scenarios becomes impractical. An alternative method is to conduct such simulations in real-time using a multi-core simulation platform. Real-time simulation also allows protection relays (running embedded protection algorithms) to be verified through 'hardware in the loop' techniques. In this paper we discuss the simulation of DC SPSs in real-time using Opal-RT simulation platform. Firstly the system is modelled for non-real-time simulation. Subsequently these models are converted for real-time simulation and executed using RT-Lab on the Opal-RT target. Modelling and control approaches of DC SPS and some of the attributes of Opal-RT are also discussed.
Dynamic Modeling, Simulation, and Testing of a Marine DC Hybrid Power System
IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification, 2021
The hybridization of power systems offers the low-emission and energy-efficient marine vessels. However, it increases the complexity of the power system. Design, analysis, control, and optimization of such a sophisticated system require reliable and efficient modeling tools to cover a wide range of applications. In this work, a typical DC hybrid power system model is developed using a bond graph modeling approach. Necessary component models of varying degrees of fidelity are developed and integrated to build a system model with reasonable accuracy. The developed system model, along with the rule-based energy management system, is used to simulate the entire system and to investigate the load-sharing strategies as well as the system stability in various operating scenarios. Moreover, the simulation results are validated with experimental results conducted on a full-scale laboratory setup of DC hybrid power system and with a ship load profile. The results show that the system model is capable of capturing the fundamental dynamics of the real system. The hybrid power system model is further used to analyze the bus voltage deviation from its nominal value. The computational efficiency presented by the system is fairly good as it can simulate faster than real-time. The developed system model can be used to build up a comprehensive simulation platform for different system analysis and control designs. The energy storage device (ESD) based zero-emission vessel is still challenging for all types of marine vessels due to the low energy density of ESDs [2], [3]. An isolated bidirectional converter modeling for hybrid electric ship simulations
Different modeling approaches for an isolated bidirectional dc-dc converter are investigated to be used in analysis and simulation of a hybrid electric ship. The models are verified by comparison with simulation results of detailed switching model in PLECS software. The advantages and disadvantages of different modeling methods are discussed. A unified model for both buck and boost modes is proposed for current control applications, using the preferable method. Finally, the simulation results of an energy storage system are presented, employing the proposed unified model in a hybrid electric ship simulation.

Environmentally driven regulations are significantly 6 affecting shipping in recent years, where the shipbuilding industry 7 is required to comply with upcoming restrictions concerning 8 polluting emissions. Development of a Multiphysics Real-Time Simulator for Model-Based Design of a DC Shipboard Microgrid

Recent and strict regulations in the maritime sector regarding exhaust gas emissions has led to an evolution of shipboard systems with a progressive increase of complexity, from the early utilization of electric propulsion to the realization of an integrated shipboard power system organized as a microgrid. Therefore, novel approaches, such as the model-based design, start to be experimented by industries to obtain multiphysics models able to study the impact of different designing solutions. In this context, this paper illustrates in detail the development of a multiphysics simulation framework, able to mimic the behaviour of a DC electric ship equipped with electric propulsion, rotating generators and battery energy storage systems. The simulation platform has been realized within the retrofitting project of a Ro-Ro Pax vessel, to size components and to validate control strategies before the system commissioning. It has been implemented on the Opal-RT simulator, as the core compone...
