The Role of Social Media in Mitigating Domestic Violence against Women in Port Harcourt: An Advocacy for Policy and Legal Frameworks

GUU JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES, 2023

The advent of social media has expanded rapidly over time. In Nigeria, this development has also gained a lot of popularity and has developed into a very effective communication tool for spreading information generally and drawing attention to social vices in particular. Domestic violence is a phrase with many different definitions that refer to instances of physical abuse, including pushing, spitting, clubbing, stabbing, and other sexual and physical assaults. Additionally, it addresses psychological and mental abuse. This comprises verbal abuse, harassment, and deprivation of one's own resources, both material and financial. The value of social media in identifying the threat it poses to society cannot be overemphasised, particularly in raising awareness, educating the public, and serving as a watchdog to proffer remedies that would reduce or eliminate it. Therefore, the study was aimed investigating how social media is used to highlight the negative effects of domestic violence. The Port Harcourt metropolitan population, comprising Port Harcourt Local Government Areas I and II and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas, served as the source for the 400-person sample size. A survey research approach was adopted and the analyses and discussions revealed a significant prevalence of domestic violence in the study area. The study recommends that the government, religious institutions, and nongovernmental organizations should take action by evolving policies and legal instruments that will aid in lessening the threat of domestic violence against women in Nigeria.

USE OF MASS MEDIA AS A TOOL FOR ADVOCATING WOMEN’S REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS: A STUDY OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS AND SELF-HELP GROUPS IN LAGOS STATE

The role of the mass media in society clearly goes beyond mere information dissemination; they are expected to perform correlation (giving interpretation to the news they disseminate) and sociopolitical mobilisation functions. These roles draw mainly from the mass media's ability to influence public opinion, create and sustain any image of social reality that they want people to believe, and set agenda through their operations. This puts the media in the centre of any attempt to effect changes in society, especially when it requires an attitudinal and behavioural change in the people, and for the purpose of this study, the ones in government. Reproductive health and rights are clearly an important developmental agenda, especially considering the fact that the United Nations clearly recognises the rights of the woman and girl child in several covenants and conventions it has passed, and this importance is cascaded to all the countries who are members of the UN, including Nigeria. This creates a need to ensure that the local laws and regulations provide for the protection of these rights, in view of the customs and traditions prevalent in parts of the country which may be in contravention of reproductive health and rights, e.g. early forced marriages. Several rights groups have been established to ensure that this need to protect women and the girl child from these local customs and traditions, and it is the extent to which these rights groups use the media to effectively influence public opinion and policy decisions that is the focus of the proposed paper. The objectives of the study included determining media usage patterns of the rights groups that will form the sample of the study, as well as the reasons for different media options, and their evaluation of the effectiveness of their use of media for advocacy purposes. In depth interviews was used to gather data for the study and findings showed that there is a need to redirect media advocacy to pushing for implementation of policies rather than enacting more, as the current ones had not been implemented optimally. It also showed that the respondents associated media advocacy with awareness and behavioural change, but did not believe that the media had done enough to push for the levels of adherence to reproductive health and rights as prescribed in policies and international covenants. Recommendations included that the media in Lagos need to give more prominence to advocating for reproductive health and rights in partnership with the rights-based and civil society organisations.

ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN IN THE FIGHT AGAINST SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN NASARAWA STATE

International Journal of Management and Social Sciences (IJOMASS) , 2021

The recent surge in the rate of sexual violence in Nigeria has attracted great attention especially amongst stakeholders, Government bodies, non-governmental organizations, social initiatives, the media and the general public. According to police report, a total of 717 rape cases were reported between January to May 2020, statistics however show that only about 28% of sexual violence are reported to relevant authorities making the projection unimaginably higher. The incident has given rise to a massive campaign against rape and sexual violence both on the street and on the media. This study therefore seeks to examine the role social media campaigns in the fight against sexual violence. The study argues that through the social media, people can be sensitized on sexual violence, the need to report, and cases can be exposed for onward prosecution by appropriate authorities. Anchored on the agenda setting theory, the study adopts a survey research design with questionnaire as the data gathering instrument. The population of study comprises of the people of Nasarawa state as a sample of 269 people was drawn from three Local government areas of the state. Findings show that the social media is a relevant and effective weapon in the fight against sexual violence as it helps in the area of sensitization, creation of awareness, educating potential victims and exposing hidden cases. The study also discovers that despite the effectiveness of the social media, factors like low literacy level, low social media usage and false rape allegations are some the challenges of social media campaigns against sexual violence.

Tolulope Ayobami Ajayi-Ayodele and Oluwadare Oladipo Oguntomisin

This study examined Nigerian women's exposure and response to Social media Activists' messages against Domestic violence. Agenda Setting and Uses and Gratification Theories were adopted as the theoretical framework for this study. A mixed method of content analysis and survey employing coding sheet and questionnaire were employed, targeting subscribers selected from two selected Activists' groups (ActionAid Nigeria and Combat Domestic Violence and Abuse Foundation). A total of 398 subscribers were purposively selected and sampled for the study. Findings revealed that both selected Facebook groups were successful in creating awareness among social media users with a significant number of respondents highlighting its effectiveness in conveying the right message. Findings indicate a significant link between the presence of extensive messages on ways of tackling domestic violence and an increased likelihood of individuals taking necessary actions while experiencing domestic violence. A few respondents who indicated they would rather keep quiet shows there are still traces of cultural and societal influence. However, the study was successful in determining Facebook group's messages' efficacy in promoting proactive stance against domestic violence. Based on this, it is recommended that since social media activism is successful in tackling Domestic violence among women, its strategic use by social media activists for awareness creation and tackling of domestic violence coupled with offline efforts, should be intensified.

Appraisal of Public Perception of Lagos State Domestic Violence Policy

International Journal of Scientific and Management Research, 2021

The paucity of specific laws and policies to address domestic violence against women in Nigeria is palpable. The issue is further complicated by the inadequacy of the penal codes that have been used in most cases to substitute for the apparent lapses. Some states in the country have risen to the occasion of addressing this issue. Amongst such states is the metropolitan Lagos state who enacted a law on domestic violence and backed it up with a policy that focuses on the effect of domestic violence on children. In addition, the State has set up an agency that caters to the needs of the victims of domestic violence that report occurrence(s). While this is a laudable step by the Lagos government, this study revealed that the level of awareness is still incredibly low. Second, a substantial number of respondents still hold the cultural inclination to reporting incidences of domestic violence to their spiritual leaders more than not to report the same to the agency. Therefore, we call the Lagos Government to consider a policy review to make it more encompassing than focusing on the children. Second, we advocate for more stakeholders' engagement in the event of such consideration.
