The study of gender is essential to the study of language. It is quite clear that male and female characters are different in many aspects. They not only different in their physical aspect but also in using a language. This research aimed to uncover the differences of a linguistic feature in the speech of male and female characters based on woman's language theory revealed by Robin Tolmach Lakoff, linguistic features which are dominantly used by male and female characters and its implication in teaching speaking. Lakoff is a linguist who began the research of the feature of woman's language. The data of this research were taken from conversations of male and female main characters in Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen. Data collection technique used was documentation which was applied two steps they are reading the novel thoroughly and enlisting all speeches uttered by the main characters of the novel. The instrument of this research was Documentation Guideline. The researcher analyzed the data by using analysis technique according to Mile and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display, and verification. This research revealed that male and female character differs in their number of using of linguistic features. Female characters are stated use more lexical hedge, avoidance of strong swear word, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjective, intensifier, emphatic stress and super polite form than male do. Female characters use those features to show their uncertainty toward things; they tend to avoid strong swear word and use more superpolite form. Therefore, female expressions are considered more polite than male. Consequently, they can avoid friction in their conversation and build effective communication across gender. This result is in line with Lakoff theory. The researcher found that the feature which is dominantly used by male and female is an intensifier. Furthermore, the implication of this research in teaching speaking especially complimenting and interrupting expression as the functional expression is the student needs to exposed expressions of complimenting and interrupting appropriately.
Speech Acts in the Novel “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson

The research objectives are to find out:(1) what speech acts are found in the novel "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson, (2) the forms used to express speech acts meaning in this novel, (3) what the kinds of speech acts appear dominantly in this novel, (4) the ways of the novelist moral values are expressed in speech acts of this novel, and (5) the theoretical implication for English Language Teaching. Qualitative methods and content analysis were used in this research. Documentation, book reviewer, and interview were used as data collection. Triangulation was used to get validity. Research results are (1) all speech acts types appeared,(2) The were 4 directives forms, 4 commisive forms, 6 representatives forms, 3 declarations forms, 12 expressive forms,(3) Expressive was dominant,(4) The novelist expressed moral values through expressive dominantly. (5) The novel "Speak" can be implemented in the literature that has functions in the teaching and learning process.
A Stylistic Study of Narrative Elements in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice

The paper aims at the plot organization of the novel under study to decipher its structure and deep meaning. The narrative structure of the novel is analyzed from the category of narrative transformation proposed by French Linguist Tzvetan Todorov. The selected chapter from the novel i.e. Pride and Prejudice has also been analyzed keeping in view the sub categories of narrative transformation. This study will surely benefit the students to develop their linguistic competence through literature and make the readers understand the basic nuisances of literary writings. For the sake of brevity and the limitation of this paper, the researcher has analyzed the chapter-I as it’s not possible to take up all the chapters for the analysis.

Este trabalho pretende fazer uma análise da linguagem do romance Orgulho e Preconceito, escrito por Jane Austen e publicado em 1813. Mais especificamente, irei analisar a linguagem usada para descrever personagens que são leitores, a partir de uma perspectiva enunciativa, que está baseada na ideia de que cada escolha feita pelo autor (enunciador) de uma frase é significativa. Portanto, uma vez que entendamos as escolhas que o autor faz quando descreve um leitor, seremos capazes de discernir melhor quais são suas expectativas sobre seus leitores. De modo a desenvolver este estudo, trechos de Orgulho e Preconceito que estão relacionados às descrições de dois personagens-leitores (Elisabeth Bennet e Mr. Collins) foram lidos e selecionados. Esta seleção passou por uma série de investigações linguísticas, baseadas na teoria da enunciação elaborada por Émile Benveniste em seus livros Problemas de Linguística Geral I e II, que proporcionaram uma melhor compreensão de como Jane Austen propõe linguisticamente suas ideias sobre leitura/leitores.
Most Frequent Words Used in Pride and Prejudice’s Novel and Movie

Altering a novel into a screenplay has been recorded as the interesting process in the field of literary works. There will be a number of adjustments that become consideration of the director particularly dialogues. This research aims to analyze the lexical differences used by Pride and Prejudice story in both novel and movie’s version. Also, the researchers strive to interpret the results based on the highlight of each text. The novel and movie script are converted into .txt format, and using AntConc device to sort the 50 highest words used by those sources. Then, the word list is categorized based on the part of speech by Mulyana (2013). The findings reveal that in the fifty word list, most of the lexical results include in the part of speech categories except Adjective and Exclamation. Studying the implications of literary language is an interesting field of study as its focal analyses are the sophisticated linguistic features used consciously or unconsciously by the authors. Concerning the focus of this paper, the talent of Jane Austen is evident in the domain of literary linguistics. Reviewing the previous literature proves excessive scrutiny of the chief young couples, namely Elizabeth and Darcy. Given that, the present article sheds light on the conversations between the old couple in Pride and Prejudice; Mr. and Mrs. Bennet from a pragmatic perspective. The objective of this analysis was to prove that the expressive illocutionary couldalso be applied in literature, especially to find out the types, the dominant types and the reason of the most dominantly expressive illocutionary act in Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park. This study explores the similarities and differences in content between the dialogic and the narrative parts in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and between the novel's dialogues and those in its 1940 and 2005 film adaptations. These four datasets were semantically tagged and compared to one another by using qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings show how, in covering conceptual areas largely complementary to those of the narrative, the dialogues in the novel perform various communicative functions. The investigation also points to how dialogues are adapted to the semiotic needs and goals of its film adaptations.
A Speech Act Analysis in the Chinese Cinderella Novel

The most significant thing in speech act is the message that the speaker wants to deliver, it is not only words but also perform an action. The aims of this research are to analyze the speech acts and classify the illocutionary acts used in the Chinese Cinderella novel. This research used a descriptive qualitative as the method of the research. The result of the research shows that: (1) there are 137 utterances are considered as speech acts, and (2) there are 99 utterances of illocutionary acts found in this novel, which is the most dominant is assertive consist 28 utterances.
