Natural fluctuations in un-magnetized and magnetized plasmas
Journal of Plasma Physics, 2015
There are still open issues within the fluctuation theory of plasmas, in view of the difficulty of formulating adequate theoretical approaches and solving the related equations in particular regimes. A promising alternative approach is direct microphysical modeling based on first principles, as successfully applied to neutral rarefied fluids. Within this approach, the equations of motion of a large ensemble of charged particles are solved numerically while correlations are obtained from statistical analysis of the ensemble at different times. As a first step, in this work we validate the data analysis technique adopted in this numerical scheme for the case of an electron ensemble neglecting Coulomb interactions. The simulation results are compared with the analytical theory of ‘natural’ fluctuations for both un-magnetized and magnetized plasmas. For the latter, the derivations for arbitrary average distribution functions are presented.
Magnetic fluctuations and kinetic equations in a two-species plasma
Journal of Plasma Physics, 1991
Some properties of the frequency spectrum of magnetic fluctuations in a tokamak two-species plasma are investigated. We start from the nonlinear resistive ballooning kinetic equation. A method based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem of thermodynamics is employed. The frequency range |ωDe|/ω>|ω*e| is considered. The dependence of magnetic fluctuations on frequency and various macroscopic parameters is discussed. The influence of magnetic fluctuations on plasma thermodynamics is investigated.

Plasma rotation appears in many problems of fusion (neutral beam injection) and astrophysical (magnetic stars) interest. In the case of a time-independent plasma velocity it is possible to describe a stationary magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) equilibrium by a set of infinitely nested flux surfaces. Maschke and Perrin have obtained an equation describing stationary MHD equilibria for azimuthal (toroidal) plasma rotations, when the entropy is constant on magnetic flux surfaces. In the present paper we express their equation in curvilinear coordinates, both in orthogonal and non-orthogonal cases, provided there is an ignorable quantity. This equation is presented in some coordinate systems of plasma physics interest. We consider approximated analytical and semi-analytical solutions for plasma configurations in cylindrical and spherical coordinates.
Adiabatic formulation of charged particle dynamics in an inhomogeneous electro-magnetic field
Laser and Particle Beams, 2013
The relativistic motion of a charged particle is studied in an inhomogeneous field of finite duration laser pulse. An inhomogeneity in a laser field is due to the spatial variation of laser intensity. Such a variation in laser intensity is characteristic of focused and de-focused laser beams. In the presence of an inhomogeneity, the problem becomes non-integrable and hence particle dynamics can not be derived exactly. In the present work considering a slow variation in the laser intensity, it is shown that the particle dynamics is associated with an adiabatic invariant. It is further found that the adiabatic invariant itself evolves and in a typical example changes such that the adiabaticity parameter attains a value of order unity. Thus higher orders of invariance are required for specifying the particle dynamics in terms of an adiabatic invariant. An adiabatic formalism is derived using the Lie transform perturbation method for calculating the higher orders of invariance and to ob...
Classical diamagnetism, magnetic interaction energies, and repulsive forces in magnetized plasmas
2011
The Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem is often summarized as saying that there is no classical magnetic susceptibility, in particular no diamagnetism. This is seriously misleading. The theorem assumes position dependent interactions but this is not required by classical physics. Since the work of Darwin in 1920 it has been known that the magnetism due to classical charged point particles can only be described by allowing velocity dependent interactions in the Lagrangian. Legendre transformation to an approximate Hamiltonian can give an estimate of the Darwin diamagnetism for a system of charged point particles. Comparison with experiment, however, requires knowledge of the number of classically behaving electrons in the sample. A new repulsive effective many-body force, which should be relevant in plasmas, is predicted by the Hamiltonian.
The Effect of Correlations on the Heat Transport in a Magnetized Plasma
In a classical ideal plasma, a magnetic field is known to reduce the heat conductivity perpendicular to the field whereas it does not alter the one along the field. Here we show that, in strongly correlated plasmas that are observed at high pressure or/and low temperature, a magnetic field reduces the perpendicular heat transport much less and even {\it enhances} the parallel transport. These surprising observations are explained by the competition of kinetic, potential and collisional contributions to the heat conductivity. Our results are based on first principle molecular dynamics simulations of a one-component plasma.
On the Magnetic Field Spectrum and Its Fluctuations in a Primeval Cold Plasma in Thermal Equilibrium
Asian Journal of Research and Reviews in Physics, 2020
This work reassesses previous results and generalizes the expression for the low-frequency spectrum of magnetic fields fluctuations in a thermal plasma, that was previously obtained within the framework of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The new approach presented here is able to avoid any approximation yielding a unique expression that covers both the low- and high-frequency spectrum, without the need of procedures to smooth the junction between the two limit frequency regions formerly used. Also, the simultaneous dependence of this intensity on the plasma and on the collisional frequencies is discussed. Finally, the total emitted plasma energy is compared to the Stefan-Boltzmann law of a pure black-body.
