Pakistan is going through a very critical phase of its history. The country is facing problems which demand a very careful analysis of the situation before formulating any policy to handle them. Terrorism, sectarian violence, separatist movements and demands for the creation of new provinces are but a few problems to start with. These issues pose a direct threat to the very existence of the state. Complexity of these matters necessitates very thorough and extensive approach towards the issues and their solutions. Mass media, being the fastest way of communicating information and ideas, can facilitate the understanding of issues of concerned officials and state institutions.
DIGITAL MEDIA AS A MEANS OF INFORMATION: A COMPARISON WITH PRINT MEDIA

The topic was taken "comparison of print media and digital media" to understand the transfer of information in print media and digital media. Print media is a means of mass communication through which information is disseminated in printed form. As against this, electronic media which is a part of digital media is one in which electronic or electromechanical energy is employed to transmit information to the audience. The usage of print media is quite specific than the digital media which is widely used. In digital media, the information shown is always updated and instant than the newspaper (print media) which is actually bit slower than the digital media. The study concludes that digital media is a preferable mode of information access especially among the youth.

Technology development has shaped the way we communicate each other. New media also built a new mode of communication. These developments lead to a new map of communication-in the field of practice and theoretical domain. Responding to these developments, Ward divided media to 'new' news media, 'new' non-news media, and traditional media. Each was characterized by its technology, interactivity, and any other features. McQuail divided media into 4 type: interpersonal communication media, interactive playing media, information searching engine, and information exchange media such as Internet. For Pavlik, technical functions become the main feature of media categorization. There are stages of production and processing information, distribution and transmitting information, and display or ways of presenting information.

Electronic media has got enormous popularity in present-day world. It has heavily influenced each sphere of life in the entire world. Information revolution has turned the world into a global village, where information passes from one part of the world to another in seconds. Media has connected the world and has not only drastically changed the lives of people but also influenced the policies, strategies of the governments. Media is considered as a soft power in the modern world that directly affects human minds and brings change in the attitudes and behaviors. Public opinion is not only influenced but shaped and designed by media, it has a great influence on strategic planning and environment. Modern societies are well aware of the fact that their survival is dependent on the wise and prudent use of media. The emergence of electronic media played a significant role in transforming Pakistani society into a well-informed society, but it raised several questions about the use and need of media in national cohesion and national security.

The relationship between the text and the printing press established by the German innovator Johannes Gutenberg has survived for close to over four hundred years now. His innovation liberated word and text from the short-lived wood-engravings and the constraints of precarious human hands. Publishing could be done on a mass scale. The print media created in Jurgen Habermas’ term ‘a public sphere for political debate’, and helped crystallize the notion that public opinion must be the basis of governance. But censorship notwithstanding, the first substantial threat to the print media came through the medium of the radio set. Signals travelled through the air-waves and brought news directly to the listener. Television followed soon after. In the late 90s, the US Defence Department run-Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) a system of inter-connected computers was de-shackled from governmental control and the World Wide Web was born. Since the 90s, some quarters have seen a steady decline of the print newspaper in favour of the online source of news. But low levels of internet penetration in India coupled with computer illiteracy makes newspapers still the preferred choice. Online newspapers do not present an ‘existential’ threat to the print media. What the print newspapers can learn is the advantages of ‘interactivity’ and ‘democratization’ of content.

From the age of the printing press to that of the next generation networks, technology has always mediated human communication. Today, both the rapid convergence of information and communication technologies and its widespread effect on the media have upgraded the mediating role of technology on how we communicate, get informed, socialize, engage in political activity, create, consume and play. Such mediation does not come in the simplistic form of merely extending human capabilities , but in the much more sophisticated form of structuring their potential field of action. By this it is meant that the physical and logical infrastructure of the technologies underlying the media eventually determine their architecture.
