Industry 4.0: critical investigations and synthesis of key findings
Management Review Quarterly
The concept of Industry 4.0 has been one of the most debated and trending topics over the last few years. Progressively, it has attracted the attention of academicians, practitioners, and policymakers worldwide. However, there needs to be more systematic review of research in the current literature that captures the current state of this new paradigm. This study aims to address this gap by conducting a comprehensive review of Industry 4.0 previous studies to identify its technological, organisational, and managerial enablers, as well as its implementation challenges and benefits. A systematic literature review was conducted, in which 244 peer-reviewed journal papers were analysed in the Scopus database until the end of May 2022. This study excluded conference papers, book chapters, and journal papers not written in English. The study indicated that industry 4.0 is still an immature topic, and applying this new paradigm is not a matter of technology only. Organisational and managerial aspects should be considered. Additionally, the transition towards Industry 4.0 is a complex task, many obstacles exist, and manufacturing companies should be aware of these challenges for successfully implementing this new paradigm. The obtained results in this study synthesise recent studies published on Industry 4.0 and provide a comprehensive picture of Industry 4.0 and potential research directions for future research. Also, this study offers significant guidelines for managers interested in implementing Industry 4.0.

What is more, the status quo, challenges and development directions faced in various fields in the industrial 4.0 era are elaborated. The paper not only combs the research direction for researchers, but also presents the status quo of practical application for enterprises. The paper contributes to showing a leading role for theory and practice of industry 4.0.
Industry 4.0: definitions and technologies - draft 2.2
Industry 4.0 will likely have an enormous impact on our society and a lot of research has been and will be done about it. However, the Industry 4.0 concept lacks a proper definition, hence leading to shallow descriptions based on listings of related technologies that in-or exclude different aspects depending on the variation. Therefore comparing research conclusions on the topic is complex and framing new Industry 4.0 research is difficult. Also the discrepancy between academic and industrial language relating the topic increases communication and comparison differences. In this qualitative study of Industry 4.0 previous descriptions of Industry 4.0, often technology based, are listed, as well as a new, technology independent definition; that should prove useful for, amongst other things, longitudinal studies. The study also lists definitions of common terms and abbreviations in the research field and the relation between related technologies, their organizational function and what they enable. From this study it is clear that not technologies, but rather the role they play in an organization play a role as to whether that organization is transitioning to Industry 4.0. Finally, based on these findings an indicator methodology for measuring the maturity of an organizations transition to Industry 4.0 is proposed.
What has Industry 4.0 got to do with us? A review of the Literature
2018
This article presents an exhaustive review of the literature relevant to Industry 4.0 (I.4.0) and Smart Factories (SFs). In this review, a landscape of I.4.0 principles is plotted in the form of a mind map, Definitions explored, background and components investigated, from this a pyramid framework is constructed. This pyramid will assist in identifying the major themes of this I.4.0 concept and help provide specific gaps for further research. A meta-analytic approach (qualitative literature review method) was taken. The paper highlights contradictions and similarities in the form of a table of current research presented in the field of SFs. Successful frameworks such as “Aluminium Industry 4.0”, “SmartFactoryKL” as a model for I.4.0, and game changing case studies such as Exxon Mobil, Proctor and Gamble and Tata Motors are explored. Finally the paper discusses the gaps in knowledge, specifically into the area of what I.4.0 means for developing contexts. The pyramid framework is pres...

The Challenges of Defining the Term “Industry 4.0”
Society, 2020
The presented study deals with the definition of the Industry 4.0 phenomenon, which generally refers to the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution. In the framework of this analysis, the interpretation of this term is examined in strategic documents (from the government, experts, representatives of businessmen and employees) and in the professional literature (expert interpretation of the term). For the purpose of defining the Industry 4.0 concept, a simplified scheme is created which divides it into descriptive and normative definitions. The description of "what is" includes a retrospective on previous industrial revolutions and the definition of possible areas of automation. Conversely, the normative description of "how it should be" works with the sustainability of competition in the global space, while providing guidance on how to prepare society for this (r)evolution. These preparations, which include subsidies to companies, education reforms, planning and reform of the welfare state, automation as a process of excluding an individual from the manufacturing process and cost savings, will lead to the creation of a new society, we argue.
A Taxonomy of Industry 4.0 and Related Technologies
Industry 4.0 - Current Status and Future Trends, 2020
Industry 4.0 and related technologies will remain at the top agenda of manufacturing systems until respective digital transformation is completed. In order to increase the speed of the transformation and the respective performance, a taxonomy of industry 4.0 is proposed in this chapter. The taxonomy is defined through four aspects including strategic understanding, managerial practices, technological infrastructure and developments, as well as human intervention with respective skills and competencies. Each aspect of these is defined and further subcategorized in order to reveal the real dynamics of industry 4.0 and respective implementations. Generating the taxonomy would also easy the categorization of the respective efforts and make the assessment processes to be carried out more effectively. It is also believed that the proposed taxonomy will be the source of generating a maturity model of industry 4.0. Note that the proposed taxonomy and respective components are defined by reviewing 620 papers, maturity models, and industry 4.0 projects.
A review of the societal Impact and Challenges of Industry 4.0
2022
For others, "Industry 4.0," "digital transformation," or "Industry X" (a phrase invented by Accenture to widen the benefits of Industry 4.0 beyond manufacturing) are interchangeable names for the fundamental business shifts that businesses are confronting. Industry 4.0 can be thought of as a very broad research subject because it encompasses a wide range of current and future applications at various scales. I4.0 proponents think that next-generation technologies will play a larger role in economic, production, and societal growth, especially as all I4.0 applications demonstrate the potential of cutting-edge technology as well as system-level requirements.
The Advent of Industry 4.0 in Manufacturing Industry: Literature Review and Growth Opportunities
2017
Nowadays, the value creation process is based on management of a large amount of data, the Big Data, which are able to connect businesses and customers from all over the world (Xie et al., 2016). Considering the managerial and industrial points of view, Industry 4.0 is a new economic model for the industrial world (Peressotti, 2016), based on the evolution of production paradigm, technological change and process logic adoption: companies should change their business models, invest in staff training, adopting new managerial tools. As a result, the change of the market (from standardized to diversified) with the production of customized products. Machines and robots are able to communicate each other, to take decisions and to self-update. The production lines are automated: control and maintenance tasks can be performed remotely. As a consequence, the creation of the agile value chain: it allows you to monitor large amounts of data in real time, to track status and location of goods, to control the production process distantly. To study the level of adoption of 4.0 industrialization plans, two global indicators have been analyzed: they identify the placement of the largest industrial powers as brought to you by CORE View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk MICROECONOMICS 633 a result of their industrialization policies adoption. Since the literature review shows few academic contributions and the subject is studied from engineering, computer and industrial design points of view, the objective of the work is to provide a theoretical contribution to managerial and industrial studies: the adoption of innovation in economic policy represents an opportunity to improve the country identity and the competitiveness level. So it is essential to encourage companies to adopt innovative tools, making the production automated. The methodology used is the content analysis technique: literature analysis, reports, conference proceedings, publications and websites are consulted. The originality of the work is to investigate a topic developed recently in Italy.
