Work activities within sustainable development

Production, 2015

This paper presents the main results of a Franco-Brazilian Research project entitled "Work, Innovation and Development". The aim is to conceptually consider work activity within sustainable development, and to contribute methodologically towards developing strategies for designing sustainable work systems. After a brief description of the factors and the dimensions that have contributed to the creation of ideas on sustainable development, we will put forward two main approaches for understanding work activity within the context of sustainability, these being: the durability of work activity and the development of work activities for sustainable development. Both approaches are presented and examples are given. This is followed by a discussion of the design of sustainable work systems that focuses particularly on the political and technical dimensions of project management.

Work, Innovation and Sustained Development

Advances in intelligent systems and computing, 2018

There is an agreement to consider human work as being insufficiently considered in the challenges set by Sustainable Development. This communication discusses why work is a “forgotten dimension” of sustainable development. We suggest (i) the interest for a greater attention to the relationship between work, technique and activity, (ii) the necessity to articulate on the one hand the design of innovative technologies and on the other hand the question of living together at work, and (iii) the need, given the depth of changes required on work activity during transitions to sustainable development, to pay attention to the experience of the workers.

OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

IJARW, 2022

Without sustainability foundations, sustainable development cannot be thought of. The economy, social, and environmental foundations were previously established by researchers. Sustainable development gains credibility in terms of occupational safety and health improvement as all three foundations are improved. However, the results of the researchers have a flaw in that they do not accept the current three foundations. Previous studies failed to consider the other three foundations of sustainable development: society, politics, and technology. As a result of the pillars' introduction, workplace injuries and illness are reduced. As a result, this study focuses on occupational safety and health innovation, enhancing new pillars for the sustainable growth, its effect on sustainable development, and identifying potential research areas for the three pillars. Literature reviews, employee interviews, and industry observations were all included. There were few studies on how occupational safety impacts sustainable growth. With these foundations in place, long-term growth that can be ensured by considering occupational safety and health creativity for both internal and the external entities involved in the workplace. The study also discovered that Occupational Safety and Health advancement leads to the sustainable development by promoting healthier workers, a safer workplace, lower injury costs, a controlled climate, regulated workplace injuries, and increased workplace safety awareness. This literature, on the other hand, concentrated on the connection between workplace creativity and long-term sustainability. It is attempted to pave the way for sustainable development through innovative and improved approaches to workplace safety and health. In this sense, the United Nations (UN) has participated. They agreed to establish targets for sustainable development, giving priority to the climate, in 1992 at Rio-92, via Agenda 21, which was developed with the help of 172 countries. This policy is the outcome of governments and people working together around the world to develop a new global paradigm for eradicating poverty, fostering growth and wellbeing, protecting the environment, and combating climate change. The year 2015 will go down in history as the year that the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the 2030 Agenda, were established. The document was based on the foundation of environmental protection, social justice, and economic development. Meanwhile, the eight outlined goals that became known as the "8 millennium goals" for the period 2000-2015 were set at the turn of the century. A new action plan was developed at the United Nations Summit in New York (USA) until 2030.

Sustainable Development and the Future of Work in the Context of the Jubilee of Mercy: Statement of Commitment and Action

We, representatives of Catholic organisations, movements of trade unions and of cooperatives, associations of business leaders, and other organisations involved in the promotion of decent work at local, national or international levels, gathered in Rome, between 2 and 5 of May 2016, for a Global Seminar on " Sustainable Development and the Future of Work in the Context of the Jubilee of Mercy " are: • appreciative of the facilitating role of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, the International Labour Organisation, Caritas Internationalis, the Working Group of Catholic–Inspired Organizations Engaged in the Promotion of Decent Work, and the German Commission for Justice and Peace, in convening this important discussion to identify some of the most critical issues in the world of work, and exchange on innovative solutions; • (We are) convinced that people, including workers, their families, and communities, should be placed at the center of sustainable development policies and should be the first concern in the reflection and debate on the future of work; We envision that our profound discussions and reflections, held during this Global Seminar, have set us firmly on a steady path which will be marked by progress on securing additional commitment to establish fair and just public policies and practices, by effectively increasing access to youth employment and quality education and program development to protect job stability and to eradicate deterioration or marginalization of international labor standards. • (We are) committed to promote dignity, dialogue, and the promotion of human rights and international labour standards as the core of any sustainable development policies. Of critical importance are issues such as lack of respect and legal guarantees to freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining and just wage, the eradication of child labour; forced labour, trafficking and the modern forms of slavery as well as any form of discrimination, the difficult access to employment for many young adults; worsening situations of work, including indecent, undignified, and unsafe conditions, especially with regard to the increasing precarity and informalization of work in the global supply chain, lack of recognition for the value of work, failure to pay just wages and to provide other social protections for workers and their families; transformation of the world of work, including through digital and other forms of technology; lack of access for migrants and refugees to decent working

TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Sustainability had been a global talk for the last decade, deriving from it the sustainable development as an escapism from the current deterioration affecting our ecosystem. Sustainable development is focused development to meet the present needs without compromising the chances of upcoming generations to meet their needs from this point many organizations started to monitor globally the threatened future of the nations to develop a sustainable ecosystem. The World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), the Brundtland Commission main objective was to unite countries to adopt sustainable development. Gro Harlem Brundtland, The Chairperson, appointed the Secretary General of the United Nations, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, in 1983. At that time, the UN understood that there was a massive deterioration in the environment and natural resources. Taking a step forward, the UN established the Brundtland Commission. (LeGates and Stout, 2007) Under the slogan of Our Common Future, the commission explained that the city is a man-made construct and that the character and the urban quality are defined by the relationship between the city and the surrounding. Going through the urbanism history, it's quite significant that each city has its own character and each city shows the development of the urban life and its effect on the environment. Recently, sustainability and ecological urbanism had become dominant forces in urban planning. (LeGates and Stout, 2007) The main goal for seeking the concept of sustainable development is to meet the needs of the present without compromising the chances of the future generations for a better future. According to the previous many steps acted as a response for this goal sparkling the vision of sustainability; Rio Declaration on Environment and Development was released in 1992,The Kyoto Protocol on global climatic changes in 1997-99 and The World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002.On contrast to all the previous response, The Brundtland report had faced many oppositions seeing that it attacks capitalism for governments regulations of economy as mentioned by the conservatives at the very beginning. Comparing the opening of this century to its closure, we will find out that a profound change took place and that the speed of this change is terrifying leading to cumulative pollution and shortage in basic resources and elements as water and soil. All the nations around the world are merely affected; developing countries faces desertification, pollution and poverty, industrial nation's faces toxicity, all the

Problems of sustainable development and challenges related to production

2021

Due to the changes taking place in the environment of enterprises, many problems arise in their strategic and operational activities. The basis of the emerging problems is primarily the overproduction associated with short product life cycles. It contributes to the excessive use of various types of natural resources, often in a predatory manner. On the one hand, such an approach increases waste, and on the other, contributes to the destructive degradation of the environment. The result is a lack of food and water in some countries, climate change and related extreme weather phenomena, as well as various types of disasters, such as pandemics, fires, floods, droughts, etc. Water, air and land pollution as well as global warming are reflected in deteriorating quality of life. Despite many threats, more and more enterprises perceive the danger and undertake various types of adaptive projects. It should also be emphasized that the environmental awareness of both micro-enterprises and large corporations is growing. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the basic problems that companies may encounter in their operations activity. First, changes in the environment are discussed, with particular emphasis on the depletion of natural resources, pollution of a destructive nature, as well as waste and its causes. The next part deals with the topic of globalization, pointing to both positive and negative aspects. Technical progress and related aspects such as new technologies, new processes and materials are discussed in the next part. In this part, particular attention is paid to improving productivity, thanks to the implementation of new technical solutions. Technical progress is directly related to the innovations presented in the next section. This section describes the types of innovation according to various criteria as well as factors that are conducive to increments in the level of innovation in the enterprise. The last part is devoted to the most important factor in operational activity-human 6.
