Presence as a dimension of communication: Context of use and the person

2006

Abstract. We claim that presence is elicited most strongly when information is presented as an inhabitable, external world. Technical developments that permit this, such as the creation of interactive, immersive virtual environments herald a profound change in how people relate to sources of information, and how they communicate. This change has psychological, social and cultural effects.

4 Presence as a Dimension of Communication: Context of Use and the Person

We claim that presence is elicited most strongly when information is presented as an inhabitable, external world. Technical developments that permit this, such as the creation of interactive, immersive virtual environments (VEs) herald a profound change in how people relate to sources of information, and how they communicate. This change has psychological, social and cultural effects. It has been claimed that in many ways, our relationship to information becomes that of our ancestral, pre-literate relationship to the physical world. By this view, we are heading for a post-literate future of body-based communication. But this view is too simple, since information must serve a variety of purposes, and how much presence is desirable in a communicative situation depends on many factors, including the communication devices available, the intended use and the context of use. In addition, differences between individuals, such as personality, as well as physical and psychological state, will affect how readily presence is invoked and also its impact on the individual concerned. In this chapter, we expand on the general notion of presence as a dimension of communication, and how this perspective can inform an understanding of designed variations in presence as a function of use, context, and individual psychological factors.

Technology and Presence

Advances in Human Resources Management and Organizational Development

This chapter presents and discusses the concept of presence in online dialogues and interactions. The point of departure in this discussion is that of multitasking and social presence. Then, the chapter frames different e-learning scenarios that give participants the impression of being—or not being—present in the same room although geographically dispersed. On the basis of theoretical inspiration from symbolic interactionism and ethnomethodology, educators' new roles in e-learning are discussed in the context of empirical material collected from an e-learning program in a physiotherapy school. In addition, the concept of multi-presence is presented. This chapter argues that multi-presence occurs in both online and offline interactions and that, as a result of technology, is utilized in both professional and learning situations.

1 Communication - Presence Roundtrip: Travelling along Theoretical, Methodological and Applicative Connections

The convergence between telecommunication, virtual reality and artificial intelligence technologies resulted in a dramatical increase and modification of the opportunities to experience the physical and social world. Their diffusion and integration into multi-user and multi-agent virtual worlds highlighted the relevance of addressing from a common psychological perspective the domain of communication and the domain of presence. New theoretical and practical questions are emerging, in the double intent to explain phenomena at the interplay between mind and technology and to design effective technological applications. This chapter has the goal to start an exploration of the links and reciprocal contributions between communication and presence, analyzed at theoretical, methodological and applicative level.

Social Presence and Communication Technology: Tales of Trial and Error

Social Presence in Online Learning: Multiple Perspectives on Practice and Research, 2017

Social presence, as evident in the chapters throughout this book, continues to be a hot topic in online education. Social presence resonates with people because education depends on effective communication, but communication changes when it is electronically mediated. From its inception, social presence theory has focused on how technology influences communication.

Presence and mediated interaction: A means to an end?

soc.kuleuven.be

Promoting a sense of presence is often identified as a prerequisite for mediated interaction. To do so, however, we need a thorough understanding of what presence encompasses and how it can be influenced. The goal of this paper is to elaborate on the different aspects of the sense of presence as identified in the literature, while illustrating whether and how these aspects are promoted in three virtual world cases. We hope to evoke reflection on the link between promoting presence and supporting mediated interaction.
