Problems of Education in the 21st Century, 2018
International surveys, such as TIMSS and PISA, frequently put Indonesia in the low ranks. It is an indication that the higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) of students in Indonesia are still low. This research aims to analyze students’ difficulties in solving problems that measure HOTS. This is a case study research with a qualitative approach. Participants studied were 93 high school students in grade XI. Data were collected using test instruments that measure HOTS, which was developed based on the standard contents of high school mathematics. The difficulties were analyzed descriptively by observing students’ errors in answering HOTS test items. Students’ errors were classified based on Newman’s Error Procedure (NEP). The result shows that around 8.33% of the students had difficulties in comprehension, 15.59% in transformation, 32.53% in process skills, and 1.34 % in encoding. Keywords: HOTS problem in mathematics, students’ difficulties, case study, Newman’s error procedure.

Understanding as well as planning to solve mathematical problems require a highorder thinking since it resembles the ability to think after the level of basic and critical thinking. This research aims to produce a theoretical review of students' ways of thinking and difficulties in solving PISA-based and scaffolding-based mathematical problems properly. This research employed a qualitative method with inductive data analysis. The subjects of this research were two Junior High School students with high-level mathematical ability. The data validity was conducted through triangulation method by comparing data from the result of the test, interview, and documentation method. The analysis technique was carried out within three workflows; data reduction, data presentation, data verification and conclusion. The research result shows that the students experienced difficulties in solving PISA problems on the stage of devising a plan, and carrying out the plan. As for the scaffolding, the measures taken by the researcher to solve the difficulties were; asking students to read and understand the questions, asking directional questions, giving opportunities for the students to analyse to double prepare the answer plan properly, interpreting the identified inappropriateness in order to make a solving plan.

Higher Order Thinking Skills are one of the skills that students must master in facing complex situations. These skills can be applied by teachers through Math learning at the junior high school level, therefore Math teachers must be able to facilitate students for Higher Order Thinking Skills questions. The purpose of this study is to identify the ability of the junior high school Math teachers in Kampar Regency in developing HOTS questions. A total of 30 teachers were asked to fill out a questionnaire and compile 2 HOTS questions. The results of the questionnaire were described and the questions made by the teachers were analyzed based on three aspects, namely 1) the topics chosen by the teacher; 2) the classification of questions based on dimensions of cognitive processes; and 3) the classification of questions that meet the Higher Order Thinking Skills category. The findings showed that the teachers chose a variety of topics including numbers, algebra, geometry and measurement, ...

The Indonesian government makes efforts to improve students' higher-order thinking skills by implementing a Minimum Competency Assessment or Assessment Kompetensi Minimum (AKM) as a substitute for the National Examination. With the implementation of the AKM, it is necessary to find out how students can solve these questions. This research analyzed students' higher-order thinking skills in solving AKM-type math problems. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research consisting of 3 stages: the preparation stage, the implementation stage, and the data analysis stage. The research was conducted in the odd semester of the 2020/2021 academic year with the research subjects of eleven 8th grade students of SMP IT Raudhatul Ulum Sakatiga, South Sumatra, and SMPN 11 Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. Data collection techniques used are tests, documentation, observation, and interviews. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that students with high abilitie...
Developing Mathematical Higher Order Thinking Skills of Senior High School Students
Mathematics learning has an important role in improving the quality of human resources. In order to achieve these objectives, mathematics learning should be able to facilitate individuals to develop higher order thinking skills. Fact on field indicate that mathematics learning in Indonesia has not oriented to higher order thinking skills. It can be seen from the low achievement of Indonesian students in the TIMSS study. Some efforts should be made to improve mathematical higher order thinking skills of senior high school students, namely: (1) involve students in activities of non-routine problem solving; (2) facilitating students to develop the ability to analyze and evaluate (critical thinking) and the ability to create (creative thinking); and (3) encourage students to construct their own knowledge.

Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) is one of important aspects in education. Students with high level of higher order thinking skills tend to be more successful. However, do this phenomenon also happen in the learning of Mathematics? To answer this question, this research aims to study the relationship between HOTS and students' academic performance in Mathematics instruction. The research is conducted by occupying correlation research method on 41 students of mathematics education in university of Papua who had already completed 120 credits. The instrument in a test format for HOTS measurement has two main indicators; the critical thinking skill and creative thinking skill. Students are selected as research subjects, and are asked to do 9 questions of HOTS test in 60 minutes. The holistic rubric is used to assess the higher order thinking skills of students. The results of research show that these two variables have a high value of correlation (r = 0.814) and the regression eq...

This study aims to develop a mathematical assessment instrument for senior high school students based on higher order thinking skills (HOTS). This research is development research that aims to develop a valid, practical and effective HOTS assessment instrument. The development model used is the Tessmer’s model. There are five steps applied in this study, namely preliminary, self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one and small group and field testing. The research findings explained that each item met the validity of content (content), construct, and language. Content validity is the compatibility between the questions and the indicators that have been set for each material. Fulfilling construct validity refers to the instrument measured by the HOTS concept. It met the validity of the language because the sentence structure in the question followed the correct Indonesian language rules and did not contain double meanings or ambiguity. Therefore, this item is appropriate to be used a...
