Thin-film electronics in its myriad forms has underpinned much of the technological innovation in the fields of displays, sensors, and energy conversion over the past four decades. This technology also forms the basis of flexible electronics. Flexible electronics, also known as flex circuits, is a technology for assembling electronic circuits by mounting electronic devices on flexible plastic substrates, such as polyamide, PEEK or transparent conductive polyester film. The characteristic of Flexible Electronics is its reduced production cost and they have lightweight, thinner, non-breakable and new forms to create many new applications. Here we review the current status of flexible electronics along with its manufacturing and its applications mainly in healthcare and display.
POLYMER ELECTRONICS -FANCY OR THE FUTURE OF ELECTRONICS
At present, the electronic world is very much dominated by inorganic materials, in particular silicon. Organic materials in electronic devices were mostly used as insulators, so far. The history of polymer electronics started 25 years ago – firstly conductors, than semiconductors, transistors and fully functional polymer ICs. But the mobility of charge carriers in polymers is limited and incomparable to silicon. Nevertheless, polymer electronics plays more and more important role nowadays, especially in flexible electronic. Freedom of design, compact portable products, cost-effective assembly, environment friendly materials, software based printed ICs, flexible polymer transistors – there are unquestionable advantages of flexible electronics. Key Applications Scenarios for the polymer electronics predict fully applicable displays in use (8-10 years), embedded MEMS (2-10 years), labels for broadband wireless communication (8-10 years), polymer batteries (now – 5 years), photovoltaic cells (10 years). Probably in the future we will use Wearable Ultra Micro Computers.
Recent Technological Advances in Flexible Electronics
2013
Flexible electronics is a new field of research that is becoming popular day by day. The arrival of new era of foldable power sources in integration with electronics has led to growing demand for portable, flexible roll-up displays, biomedical sensors and wearable devices. Devices that are bendable or even wearable are unique in their functionality and convenience. Not only do they have excellent electrochemical performance but also there is a drastic reduction in the devices tendency to break or damage under pressure. We shall discuss about some of the latest technological innovations in foldable electronics like flexible solar cells and place special focus on cabletype flexible batteries. We shall also introduce various functional electrodes explored for flexible lithium ion batteries based on carbon nanotubes, graphene paper and also on a newly advanced technology of using inkjet printable ink based on graphene(or prepared from graphene) and flexible LEDs. A comprehensive discuss...
