Personality is the combination of emotional, attitudinal, and behavioral response patterns of an individual. As personality has a lasting effect on people, it is necessary to measure it in order to utilize peoples' characteristics. Different techniques have been used for measuring personality like 16 factors model, three factors model and big five factor theory. "Big Five" factor personality measurement instrument is being used as a psychometric test in a number of fields like Information Technology companies, financial institutions, Management consultancies etc. Although the "Big Five" factor model has been used in various cultures and there have been various attempts to translate the instrument into local languages; however, according to the best of authors' knowledge, no proper research methodology has been followed in these translations. This research focusses on translation of Big Five Factors personality measurement instrument into Urdu ( A language spoken and understood by more than 250 million people in the World). Half of this population is illiterate. Among literates, a major portion don't understand English language. To assess personality of these people correctly there is a need to translate this instrument into their local language Urdu. The translation steps linguists as proposed by Darwish, were followed and the targeted population was graduate engineers and engineering students.

The aim of the present study was to translate Personality Assessment Questionnaire -Adult version (Adult PAQ, Rohner, 2005) in Urdu and to determine validity and reliability of the Urdu version of Adult Personality Assessment Questionnaire (Adult PAQ, Urdu translation by Munaf, Huassain & Kamrani, 2009), and its subscales of hostility and aggression, dependence, negative self-esteem, negative self-adequacy, emotional unresponsiveness, emotional instability, and negative world view. A sample of 164 university students participated in the study. Results show that its validity and reliability was found to be adequate. Content validity of the scales was also established as adequate. Further Internal consistency, split half, correlation with the English version, inter item correlation, item total correlations and descriptive results are reported for the testing sample in the section of results.

Original Paper Personality Traits and Translation Quality: An Investigation of the Relationship in Iran Context

Different translators with different personality traits make variant decisions in their translations. In this study, the effect of personality traits of Iranian translators on their performance quality was explored from a psychological perspective. In the first step, the BFI Test (Big Five-Factor Inventory) was administered to the 30 MA translation students in Tehran Islamic Azad University. In the second step, the researcher distributed two different English source texts among the participants for the purpose of translation. Having finished the task of translating, the target texts produced by the students were assessed to investigate the correlation between personality traits and the quality of the translation. Hence, three instructors of translation were recruited to evaluate the translations and correspondingly score them on the basis of Farahzad's (1992). The analysis of the acquired results proved both of the hypotheses of the study. First, there was a positive relationship between personality traits and translators ̛ performance quality in different text types and also, Psychological model of translators' personality had a significant effect on assessing the translated works.

Selection of a Survey Research Instrument: Impediments of Personality Inventory in Non-English Speaking Countries like Pakistan

This paper aims to share the experiences of using two empirically-related yet conceptually distinct instruments i.e., Goldberg’s IP-IP and Costa and McCrae’s NEO-PI-R to measure the respondent’s personality factors and facets. This research paper presents findings on six methodological issues i.e., sampling, validity, reliability, data collection, screening confirmatory factor analyses. For validity concerns both instruments reached to obsolescence as these were developed ages ago and not updated with pace of human development. For replication in non-English countries Goldberg’s IP-IP has edge over Costa & McCrae’s NEO-PI-R for three counts; (a) it has less words and relatively simple syntax made it really easy for participant with linguistic barriers; (b) shows no sign of US cultural specificity in terms of places, slang or implicit meanings made it closer to participants in a non-English speaking country like Pakistan and (c) it takes less than half time to complete the survey. Structural Validity of Urdu IPIP NEO

The IPIP-NEO-300 is a 300-item, freely available personality inventory based on the OCEAN Model of 30 distinctive personality traits. The inventory measures human personality preferences and groups them into five distinct factors, namely Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. The inventory has been translated into many languages before, but there was no translation and norms available for the Urdu language. This article reports the translation, creation of a web version, data collection (N=869), and reliability of an Urdu version of IPIP-NEO-300. We also conducted a CFA Analysis and Measurement Invariance test. Full measurement invariance was met for the full model, and partial measurement invariance was met for Neuroticism (metric and scalar) and extraversion (metric). In general, all models fit well and suggest that the Urdu IPIP-NEO-300 aligns well with the English IPIP-NEO-300. In some cases, the Urdu inventory performed better (e.g., higher internal consistency) than the English inventory.

Investigating the Effect of Big Five Personality Traits in Iranian EFL Bilingual Learners

The present study sought to find out whether big five personalities have any impact on Iranian EFL bilingual learners and if so, which type of personality can be more tangible on these learners. To meet the aims of this study, 93 male and female Iranian high school learners in 2groups were asked to participate in this study. Subjects were asked to fill five big questionnaires. Statistical analysis based on Mean scores, standard deviation and Multivariate Analyses (MANOVA) revealed: 1-There was significant difference among two groups in five big personality.2-Female bilingual learners were more extrovert than male bilingual learners.

Developing an instrument that tests for English-language personality

Studying a second-language involves several cultural and environmental pressures that can shift behaviour and alter personality. A person may act one way in their native surroundings, but act completely differently when travelling, studying a foreign language, or talking with people from a different culture. Existing personality instruments do no capture this shift in personality, and thus a specialized personality instrument is required. This study surveyed 287 Japanese university students with 263 specialized second-language personality items. Items focused on situations involving travel, being in English class, meeting native English-speakers, watching English movies, and other activities that involve the study of English. A factor analysis, a correlational analysis and a Rasch principal components analysis was conducted on this new instrument, as well as an established personality instrument to determine their effectiveness at capturing the participants' personality. The ultimate result was a 50 item personality instrument intended for second-language contexts, which performed better than the established personality instrument. The correlation analysis also revealed that the underlying constructs of personality were not highly correlated across instruments, indicating the presence of a native language personality and a second-language personality for participants.

Toward More Readable Big Five Personality Inventories

The Estonian version of the International Personality Item Pool NEO (IPIP-NEO; was administered to 297 participants in parallel with the Estonian version of the NEO-PI-R (Kallasmaa, . On average, the EPIP-NEO items were 3 words, 7 syllables, and 18 characters shorter than the NEO-PI-R items. By all relevant psychometrical properties the EPIP-NEO was comparable to the NEO-PI-R. The mean convergent correlation between the facet scales was .73. The scales with shorter and grammatically simpler items tended to have higher internal consistency. In an independent cross-validation sample the initial results were generally replicated. The scales also demonstrated an adequate cross-observer agreement. It is concluded that the EPIP-NEO, as a more readable personality inventory compared to the NEO-PI-R, is suitable for a wider range of samples with different levels of reading skills. ). The IPIP-NEO items are short, using mainly familiar words, and with a simple grammar. The IPIP-NEO was designed to match the original NEO-PI-R structure in which five personality dimensions are described by 30 facets. With increasing globalization, organizations have an increased need for assessments administered to employees with diverse cultural and lingual backgrounds. These assessments could be cross-national assessments within a multi-national organization, or the administration of a measure to a diverse population at a single organization or location within a country. In such cases, organizations often must choose whether to attempt to translate the measure to the native language(s) of the respondents. For practical reasons, many organizations choose to administer measures in the predominant language of the organization. This study examined the differential functioning (measurement invariance) of an English language version of the International Personality Item Pool, a commonly used assessment of the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality, across native and non-native English speaking workers living within the United States. Results indicated that many items of the FFM scales did not exhibit measurement invariance across native and non-native English speakers.
