Membrane Filtration of Biosurfactants (original) (raw)

Elsevier eBooks, 2019

Abstract

Abstract Biosurfactants are surfactants produced by microorganisms. Their high surface activity and a range of biological activities including antimicrobial activity as well as their biodegradability make them very attractive molecules for a range of applications. However, their higher cost of production in contrast to their synthetic counterparts is hindering their wider commercialization. Downstream processing can account for more than 60% of overall process cost. This chapter is an overview of the application of membrane filtration processes for the recovery and purification of a range of biosurfactants, in particular lipopeptides. The main challenges and future developments in this area are highlighted.
