Journal of Education and Practice, 2018

The main objective of this study is to identify factors affecting the academic performance of undergraduate students of Raya University (RU), Maichew, Ethiopia. In order to achieve the stated objectives of the research a stratified sampling was used to select 146 students from 17 departments of the university. To analyze the collected data and to investigate factors affecting the academic performance of undergraduate students the ordinary list square (OLS) and Tobit regression methods were used. The findings reviled the existence of significance relationship between the student’s university cumulative grade point average (UCGPA) and preparatory CGPA, gender deference, place of origin, college of the student, mismatch between teaching and learning style and student’s expectation about their future job opportunity. The above independent variables are statistically significant and they are the major determinants of students’ academic performance. However, variables like, age, study hour, entrance exam result, participation in cooperative learning program, mother’s educational level and department choice were insignificant. Finally, the study recommends that Raya University, the Ethiopian ministry of education, students and students’ families, policy makers and other concerned body should work hard towards improving students’ academic performance, by considering aforementioned determinant factors.

Factors Affecting Academic Performance of University Students: A Study Among the Students of MBSTU

Journal of Economics and Sustainable Development, 2020

The students' academic performance (CGPA) plays an important role in producing the best quality graduates as well as the country's economic and social development. So, for the sustainable economic and social development of a country, it is essential to produce the best quality graduates who will lead the country in near future. Normally, the quality of a student is represented by academic performance which is determined by Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Basically, the study is conducted with the objective of investigating the factors affecting academic performance at undergraduate level in Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University. This paper aims to identify the most important and significant factors. There are many factors that contribute to determine whether the CGPA is excellent, moderate or low. Simple Random Sampling has been used to collect data. A sample of 250 undergraduate students' information was taken. Among the respondents in that sample size, male students are 130 and female 120. Findings shows that family responsibility, average study hour per day before exam or during preparatory leave (PL) have positive impact and positive association with CGPA. On the contrary, spending more time on tuition or part time job have a negative impact on CGPA. Dissatisfaction on studying subject, current education system and job market have significant impact on CGPA which is negative. Job related preparation alongside academic study has a negative impact on CGPA. One thing we have noticed that students who are not satisfied with their studying subject and dissatisfied about the current education system and job market in Bangladesh; their CGPA is lower than those who are satisfied.

Simón, Casado Díaz y Castejón (2017) Analysis of university student employment and its impact on academic performance. Electronic Journal of Research in Educational Psychology 15(2), 281-306

Electronic Journal of Research in Educational Psychology , 2017

Introduction: The research has two objectives: to characterise college students who combine work and studies, and their jobs, on one hand; and to analyse the effect of work on various measures of academic performance, on the other. Method. The study is developed using individual information derived from a survey (N=464) and from university records. We have estimated models that consider diverse measures of academic performance and control for a wide set of factors (including socio-economic characteristics and diverse measures of motivation and academic effort), distinguishing between different levels of intensity in the labour activity. The techniques used are logistic regression, ordinary least squares and instrumental variables. Results. The evidence obtained confirms, first, that a noticeable proportion of Spanish university students have a paid job, and often work regularly for extended periods. It also is common for those who work to do so motivated by necessity, and to perform tasks unrelated to the content of their studies. Moreover, the likelihood of working is higher among older students, foreigners and those who have higher levels of motivation. Secondly, the results suggest that, in contrast to the perceptions expressed by students, working regularly does not appear to have a significant impact on their academic performance. Conclusion. The article provides additional evidence on a very relevant issue that has however received very little attention in the Spanish case and for which neither theoretical studies nor previous empirical research have reached conclusive results. The article provides useful support for the consideration of employment-related issues in the designing of the itineraries followed by university students. Keywords. Academic achievement, academic performance, academic outcomes, higher education, student employment, student motivation, Spain.

Evaluating factors affecting university students’ academic performance by using structural equation model

The 5TH ISM INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL CONFERENCE 2021 (ISM-V): Statistics in the Spotlight: Navigating the New Norm

Student's academic performance is highly viewed as one of the component to be measured on university students to qualify themselves in the job market. Nevertheless, the students need to cater both academic and nonacademic activities to achieve the desired expectation from their future employer. Generally, academic performance is measured in terms of grades; courses and assignments which includes past examinations and programmatic evaluations such as extra-curricular activities. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the factors that influence university students' academic performance using Structural Equation Modelling approach. After conducting a factor analysis, five factors were identified. The factors are lecturer's assistance and motivation, self-determination, student's habit, universities facilities and services, and parents and friends' support. Finally, structural model was developed and has shown relationships between these five factors.

Indicators of Study Success Related to Impact of University Students' Enrollment Status / Pokazatelji uspješnosti studiranja u korelaciji s tipom financiranja prilikom upisa na fakultet

Croatian Journal of Education - Hrvatski časopis za odgoj i obrazovanje, 2016

Analyzing and determining patterns among indicators of academic success and their correlation to students' enrollment status can be a good foundation in the process of adapting and improving the curriculum of higher education institutions, according to students' characteristics. In this paper we analyzed variables (the completed study program, student's gender, type of previously finished secondary school and the region where they finished secondary school) and indicators of academic success (GPA and study time) and their dependence on the status of enrollment at university. The results of this research indicate that students who enrolled in the status of budget financing (SBF) achieve greater success in terms of GPA (higher GPA) and the average time required to complete the study (shorter average time of study) in comparison to students who enrolled in the faculty in the self-financing status.
