Theology in Conservation: an Exploration of Christian and Islamic Theology regarding conservation theory and conservation of churches and mosques

Pieter de Jong, 2021

In the last decades, the conservation discipline has been investigating how different worldviews and religions cope with and value their heritage. The quest for understanding the challenging position of religious values in heritage conservation also accounts for churches and mosques, which form a vast amount of this heritage. Those places of worship have broader implications for the conservation of historic buildings in general. However, despite recent advances, there is still limited understanding of how Christian and Islamic theology relates or could relate to building conservation. This dissertation, therefore, examines the way in which Christian and Islamic theology relate to conservation philosophy, the (primarily secular) conservation theory and the conservation of their churches and mosques. The examination of the primary religious texts of the Christian and Islamic faiths forms the basis of the study. Potential implications for contemporary conservation philosophy and theory are pointed out, to deepen the understanding of the place of theology in the conservation discourse as well as increasing awareness regarding the Christian and Islamic worldview and the way to deal with the conservation of their places of worship.

Mustafa Akyol's Response to Abdullah Ali's Critique of "Reopening Muslim Minds"

2022

In the Journal of Islamic Philosophy (Volume 12, 2021) Abdullah bin Hamid Ali, scholar at Zaytuna College, wrote a 24-page-long critique of my book, "Reopening Muslim Minds." In return, I wrote this 29-page-long answer. Hope it can help clarify where "baseless assertions, half-truths, false allegations, misapprehensions" really lie.

LOHLKER & IVANYI 2023 Humanitarian Islam: Reflecting on an Islamic Concept

2023

Humanitarian Islam is an innovative concept that has begun emerging from the traditions of Islam in Indonesia in recent years. The most important contemporary Islamic organizations in Indonesia support it. Nevertheless, it seems to be unknown beyond the Southeast Asian context-despite its global potential, aspirations and claims. Moreover, the concept has not received any academic attention so far. This volume presents reflections on the idea of Humanitarian Islam by Muslim and non-Muslim scholars from Europe and beyond.

Reading the Qur’an from the Contemporary Approach of Maqāṣid al-Sharī’a (A Case Study of Non-Muslim Leadership in Indonesia)

Ulumuna, 2018

This paper examines the Qur’anic verses on leadership from the perspective of maqāṣid al-sharīʻa. There has been an assumption that the norms and practices of Islamic law are incompatible to modern ideas. The Qur’an as a major source of shari’ah is here interpreted through a system approach that includes several components, namely natural cognition, inclusiveness, interrelation of hierarchy, multi-division and meaningfulness. The analysis comprises of four stages: identifying the correlated-focus verses, identifying their meanings, exploring the maqāṣid al-sharīʻa and contextualizing it to the Indonesian context. This method will be applied to conceive of the Qur’anic verses on leadership, including non-Muslim leadership. There are six special verses discussing about this issue and seven others in general. This study shows that although there are verses that restrict non-Muslim leadership for Muslims but other, more general, verses emphasize on the capability of leadership in uphold...

Cross and Crescent. Responding to the Challenge of Islam (Colin Chapman)

I've had the pleasure of attending a Cross and Crescent course led by Colin Chapman. I was highly impressed by his scholarship, his integrity and his concern to present issues in a manner that presented the Islamic perspective truly and fairly in the mind of any reasonable Muslim who might be present. This book is a tremendous resource. It is a dense book, crammed with information and insights. I don't agree with everything Chapman says, though to a large extent I simply summarise what he has said with only limited indications of areas of disagreement.
