Dynamic Motion of the Corrugated Ribbon in a Ribbon Microphone (original) (raw)
2010, Journal of The Audio Engineering Society
Ribbon microphones are known for their warm sonics, owing in part to the unique ribbon motion induced by the sound field. Here the motion of the corrugated ribbon element in a sound field is considered, and a physical model of the ribbon motion is presented. The model separately computes propagating torsional disturbances and coupled transverse and longitudinal disturbances. Each propagation mode is implemented as a mass-spring model where a mass is identified with a ribbon corrugation fold. The model is parameterized using ribbon material and geometric properties. Laser vibrometer measurements are presented, revealing stiffness in the transverse and longitudinal propagation, and showing close agreement between measured and modeled ribbon motion.

An Analytical Investigation of the Trapeze Effect Acting on a Thin Flexible Ribbon
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 2014
This paper systematically explores the extensional–torsional coupling due to the trapeze effect acting on a thin flexible ribbon subjected to combined tension and torsion. Kinematic relationships as well as expressions for the restoring torque associated with this effect are analytically derived. Additionally, the locus of points about which the cross sections of a twisted ribbon under tension rotate is derived. These points, called torsional centers, are found to be coincident with the centroids of the axial stress field at each station along the ribbon. More generally, it is shown that when a flexible slender member is in tension, combined transverse forces must act at the centroid of the axial stress field to produce pure bending and no twist. As a result, the elastic axis (EA) of the member shifts from the locus of shear centers to the locus of centroids of the axial stress field. A numerical model is developed to investigate the effect of the position of the EA on the predictio...
Vibration Measurement Of Flexible Narrow Tube Under Acoustic Excitation
2018
Flexible narrow tubes are used in periodic structures to develop mechanical vibration filters. These structures have very thin walls and measuring modal parameters is quite challenge using electromagnetic excitation methods. This study discusses the acoustic source as vibration excitation to a flexible tube. A test setup is developed by modifying impedance tube and measured vibration response using laser vibrometer. https://journalnx.com/journal-article/20150553
