Computer Simulation of Wind Flow in the Urban Residential Planning Stage
This study discusses the pre-project analysis of the wind environment, which needs to be considered before the design and construction stage based on directions, wind speeds, and their repeatability. Wind conditions are important in developing urban environment, for various reasons. For example, wind flows management may help to mitigate urban microclimate. Therefore, our objective has been to study, experimentally and numerically, how urban morphology (for example, the orientation and configuration of residential buildings) impacts wind conditions in urban environments. This article discusses the initial study of the wind environment estimated before the design stage, with the results presented. Computer modeling simulation has been carried out using Autodesk Flow Design software, which helped us to easily perform a wind environment analysis with more confidence in the validity of project decisions. Flow Design is a 3D virtual wind tunnel software for airflow modeling, including areas around buildings / group of buildings. Using this program, we have created a simulation project overview, in order to obtain airflow visualization results, in geometric modelling and graphics format.

The use of the method "simulation" of the microclimate for an urban site presents much of interest; because this can serve as us observation and analysis of the consequences of various scenarios relating to the existence and the importance of the constituent elements in urban space. Wind in outdoor urban space is among the most difficult parameters to identify and control field given its instability. Currently, in the field of the ventilation, there are some outdoor spaces simulation tools, used to assess the flow of the wind at different spatial scales. The aim of this research is to demonstrate the effect of the urban geometry of the layout on the wind movement and the outdoor natural ventilation. However, this study investigated the effect on outdoor thermal comfort of a building layouts in a planned residential area situated in the city of Jijel humid Mediterranean region of Algeria. In order to improve outside comfort in this open space, a 3D numerical simulation tool...
Leveraging Urban Configurations for Achieving Wind Comfort in Cities
Blucher Design Proceedings
Given the continuous improvements in digital design and analysis tools, designing in line with the environmental conditions can be much more seamlessly integrated into the conceptual design stage. That leads to faster, informed design decisions and, if incorporated into day-today practice, to a sustainable built environment. The presented design method, focusing on enhancing the outdoor wind comfort through architecture, leverages wind analysis tools, such as newly-developed InFraRed, verified by other Grasshopper plug-ins, in the urban design process. As shown in the case study, iterating through various design options and evaluating their impact on the wind flow is faster yet precise, leading towards picking the best-performing design alternative in terms of outdoor wind comfort.
Towards wind modelling for sustainable building/urban design
IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 2020
In view of climate change and resource depletion the analysis of wind impact on built environment could be used for conscious building/urban design protecting humans against high winds but also taking advantage of wind forces in terms of ventilation of spaces or production of wind-driven energy. There is a strong need of developing the modelling technology that would enable predictive studies in this field. Climate change mitigation and adaptation became the point of departure to introduce the notions of risk/chance analysis that could help to examine the architectural/urban design from the holistic perspective. The need of addressing different parts of wind velocity spectrum is acknowledged. The steps forming the process of design for sustainable wind environment are listed. Both the necessary test activities, and the simulation ones, as well as, the ones leading to the application of risk/chance assessment are discussed. Wind thresholds referring to different aspects, levels and s...

This paper reviews the usage of simulation tools that can evaluate outdoor thermal comfort and to predict outdoor environmental conditions with specific focus on decision making. The literature also highlights on the use of simulation as a tool in the field of urban design and the microclimatic enhancement approaches. Finally, the paper discusses the moderation of the built environment's components on the climate with the aim for optimizing the thermal comfort level in outdoor urban space (Setaih K. et al., 2013). The aim of the paper is to highlight on the importance of simulation methods that can influence urban space design and the planning process. In addition to understand how air temperature, relative humidity, air movement, and mean radiant temperature in urban canyons as well as in open public spaces for human thermal comfort on the microscale in a sample of the old historic district south Kom Al Shoqafah by Al Mahmoudiya Canal. In the recent past, rapidly growing urban areas are being observed worldwide. This growth has a direct impact on the microclimate and in turn on human comfort, hence negatively affecting global climate and energy consumption levels. Design decisions such as street (geometry and orientation), sidewalk widths, shading structures, materials, landscaping, building heights and air flow are key factors for pedestrian thermal comfort (Rosheidat, 2008).
WIND PATTERN FEATURES IN TYPICAL CITY MODELS
Wind conditions in urban environments are important for a number of reasons. Outdoor aeration, interior natural ventilation, bioclimatic comfort and air pollutants dispersion are most important. That is why basic city morphology options should be found yet at the urban planning stage with consideration of local wind climate. This paper is intended for establishing a range of urban planning decisions, based on the three typical city models – «city-cup», «city-hill» and «city-plateau» - affecting urban wind climate under high, moderate and low wind velocity conditions. These three case studies illustrate the possibilities and limitations of applying urban wind climate control measures to improve living conditions. To validate typical models in different wind climates simulations with the use of ENVI-met software suite were carried out. Comparison of derived wind field statistics allows to reveal the optimal town-planning decisions for various wind climates. The knowledge obtained from this analysis provides planners and architects a way to consider wind protection ptions that should be applied in climate-conscious design.
464: Wind quantification in urban environments
2008
There is today a real lack of scientific studies and simple design tools to understand wind flows around buildings. This research is based on a great number of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations carried out with FLUENT software to evaluate wind comfort at pedestrian level. This paper describes first the wind comfort criteria chosen. It then develops the process used for validating FLUENT software for wind studies in dense urban environments by comparing our simulations results with wind tunnel tests. This validation shows that wind mean velocities around buildings can be simulated numerically with a very high degree of accuracy. Based on the results of our simulations, we developed simple graphical tools to quantify critical wind speeds around buildings. This article should thus help in practice architects and town planners to design our built environment. Moreover, this paper shows how numerical modelling is now a high-performance tool to work out useful guidelines and ...

Coastal regions have specific climatic conditions, that require deliberate thinking before considering urban interventions. So, understanding these conditions is the starting point to lay out a responsive design that realizes the symbiotic relationship between nature and urban development in such a sensitive context. This paper analyses different parameters of the urban form, that control the outdoor human thermal, and wind comfort in the Egyptian coastal zone. It presents an experimental investigation of the microclimatic conditions, in selected districts, on the coast of Baltim (resort city in Egypt). It uses ENVI-met 4.0 Software to assess three environmental variables, namely: Air Temperature, Relative Humidity, Wind Speed, and one thermal index (PMV). It compares the results of simulating three different orientations of urban blocks in three different districts. The measurements were taken during both the summer and winter of 2018. In addition, the research focuses on correlating simulation results, at the selected sites, to the key parameters of the examined blocks, which are: Aspect Ratio (H/W), Street Orientation, and Building Volume. Finally, the results give an indication of the way in which design configurations of urban blocks could be controlled to enhance the microclimatic conditions in such coastal areas.
