Completing this book has taken more time than either of us ever intended, but it has also taught us more than either of us ever imagined it would. During its development we have incurred numerous debts to enormously helpful and encouraging colleagues. Special gratitude, of course, is owed to David Dowty who was elaborately responsive to all of our inquiries and thereby helped illuminate several issues which would otherwise have remained obscured to us. We can only hope that some of the moves we've made accord in some ways with his own analytic intuitions about extensions to his original proposal.
