Examination of nursing students' anxiety levels related to clinical practice with respect to peer support

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between stress and anxiety levels of nursing students at during their first clinical practice. Design and Methods: Designed as a quasi-experimental study with a study group (n = 13) and a control group (n = 13) among nursing students at a university. Findings: Students who practiced in the clinic for the first time experienced stress and anxiety, and their stress levels increased with high levels of state anxiety. The stress and anxiety decreased using peer support of the study group there was no change in the control group.

Background: Clinical practice is one of the important stages of nursing education. The problems which many students encounter in their first experiences in th is area can cause a feeling of anxiety and a loss o f motivation which lasts throughout their education. Evaluating Nursing Students' Anxiety and Depression during Initial Clinical Experience

Nursing students suffer high levels of stress and anxiety during their education experiences. Clin ical training and first exposure in hospital clin ical training field mo re stress than class experiences. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceived level of stress and anxiety in undergraduate nursing students. In this cross-sectional study, data were obtained from 30 students using a self-ad ministered questionnaire "The zung anxiety status inventory (ASI), zung self-rating depression scale". Prevalence of Normal range of depression level was 90%, mildly depressed 6.7% and moderately depressed about 3.3%. Ho wever the Zung an xiety status inventory reported only 6.7% of the student had marked to severe anxiety levels. Significant variation in an xiety status was evident with the anxiety scores were ranked as mild or moderate in 53.3% of students. These findings call fo r introduction of stress management programs and psychiatric care into nursing health services of the University.

Study of Social Anxiety in Nursing Students of Tehran Universities of Medical Sciences

Introduction: Social anxiety is an important factor in peoples' mental health. Good mental health while studying in university makes students able to deal effectively with numerous stressors that they experience. The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the social anxiety of nursing students in grades one to four of medical universities in Tehran. Methods: In this analytic cross-sectional study, 400 students from universities of medical sciences in Tehran were recruited by stratified sampling with proportional allocation. Data were collected during the first semester in 2010. Students completed a two-part questionnaire including the Liebowitz social anxiety questionnaire and a demographic information form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics methods and an analytical test by SPSS statistical software. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the total scores of social anxiety of first-to fourth-year students. The mean score of the avoidance of social interaction dimension in fourth-year students was significantly lower than in first year students (p<0.05). Conclusion: In regard to the relationship between social anxiety and interpersonal communication as an associated part of nursing care, decrease of social anxiety of students could play an important role in their mental health. According to the results of this study, it seems that the placement of students in the nursing education system does not produce any changes in their social anxiety.

Peer Learning in the Clinical Education of Nursing Students: Outcomes Evaluation of a Structured Program in Italy

Purpose: The aim of our study was to evaluate the outcomes of peer learning in the clinical education of nursing students by comparing the points of view between junior and senior students, and their tutors. The secondary aim of this study was to compare the level of anxiousness perceived by junior and senior students in specific situations experienced during clinical education. Design: A qualitative descriptive study. Materials and Methods: A sample of 60 junior and 28 senior students was selected to anonymously respond to ad-hoc questionnaires. A Focus Group was used to evaluate the tutors’ experience. A tool validated by Kleehammer, Hart & Fogel Keck (1990) to study the causes of anxiety in students during clinical education was used with some modifications. One of the factors that influence the occurrence of anxiety in students when clinical practices is the guidance process by the clinic advisor. Anxiety that appears to students when clinical practice can affect student intervention to patients and can be harmful for patients. The purpose of this research is to find out about the relationship between perception regarding clinical guidance process and the anxiety level of the 3Th semester of clinical nursing students of PSIK Unsrat in Bhayangkara hospital and puskesmas Bahu Manado. The method used in this study is cross-sectional study design involving 73 students in clinical practice as the respondents. Data collection was done using the NCTEI questionnaires and ZSAS. The Results of this study, out of 47 students most of them had perceptions of clinical guidance process in the poor category (64.4%) and experienced light anxiety (57.5%) by using the Spearman Rank test, ρ value=0,000 is smaller than the α value, 0.05. In conclusion of this study there is a relationship between perceptions of clinical guidance process and anxiety levels of clinical nursing practice students.

Anxiety, Stress Levels Experienced by Nursing Students Studying in the Classical and Integrated Curriculum in TheirFirst Clinical Practice and Some Affecting Factors

Etkin bir klinik uygulama hemşirelik eğitiminde tartışmasız bir yere sahiptir. Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı klasik ve entegre programda öğrenim gören hemşirelik öğrencilerinin ilk klinik uygulamalarında yaşadıkları kaygı, klinik stres düzeyi ve etkileyen bazı faktörlerin belirlenmesidir. Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel nitelikteki bu çalışmanın örneklemini iki klasik, iki entegre müfredat programında öğrenim gören ve klinik uygulamaya ilk kez çıkan 264 hemşirelik öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. Verileri, Tanıtıcı Özellikler Formu, Durumluk-Sürekli Kaygı Envanteri ve Pagana Klinik Stres Anketi (KSA) ile toplanmış, yüzdelik dağılım, iki ortalama arasındaki farkın önemlilik testi, ANOVA ve ki-kare önemlilik testi ile değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Öğrencilerin toplam KSA puan ortalaması 26.64±9.68 olup, klasik program öğrencilerinde 22.66±9.20, entegre program öğrencilerinde ise 28.80±9.26'dir. Her iki müfredat programı öğrencilerinin klinik stres düzeyinin ortalamanın altında olduğu saptanmıştır. Ancak, entegre müfredat programında öğrenim gören ve özellikle kız, kendisini hemşirelik mesleğine ait hisseden, eğitiminden orta düzeyde doyum alan öğrencilerde klinik stresin anlamlı düzeyde biraz daha yüksek olduğu saptanmıştır (p<0.05). Entegre program öğrencilerinin (40.88±7.47) kliniğin ilk günü durumluk kaygı puan ortalaması klasik program öğrencilerine (38.78±5.82) göre anlamlı düzeyde daha yüksektir (t=2.524,p=.012). Sonuç: Her iki programda öğrencilerin kliniğin ilk gününde klinik stresinin düşük, kaygı düzeyinin ise ortalamanın üzerinde olduğu bununla birlikte, entegre program öğrencilerinin klinik stres ve kaygı düzeylerinin daha yüksek olduğu söylenebilir.

From Nerves to Knowledge: Class Room Anxiety Among Nursing Students at Nursing Institutes in Pakistan

Anxiety is an emotionally adaptive reaction to unclear or frightening situations that helps people act and react appropriately. Nursing students have frequently reported feeling anxious for a variety of reasons, such as the challenging nature of nursing courses and non-cooperative behavior of nursing faculty. Objectives: The objective of the study was to evaluate the level of class room anxiety among nursing students. Methodology: A descriptive cross sectional study design was used to assess the level of class room anxiety among nursing students at public and private colleges of nursing in Karachi, Pakistan from November, 2023 to January, 2024, sample size was calculated by using Open Epi version 3.0 and total 140 participants were responded while convenient sampling technique was used. A wellstructured questionnaire, the Situational Communication Apprehension Measure, developed by Richmond, served as the model for the instrument used in this study to collect the data. The data was analyzed by using SPSS version 26.0. The participants of the study were the students of Generic BS Nursing above the age of 18 to 32 years while all the students of other nursing discipline were excluded from the study. Results: 20.72% of participants indicated normal range of anxiety, 28.57% shown mild to moderate level of anxiety, 42.86% reported severe degree of anxiety, and 7.85% experienced extreme degree of anxiety.

Investigate the anxiety between undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students and its relation to their socio-demographic characteristics

Objective: Anxiety is a warning sign for an upcoming risk and is a common reaction of most people reacting to stressful events. The purpose of this study was to investigate anxiety between undergraduate and postgraduate students in nursing and its relation to their socio-demographic characteristics. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, quantitative study with a study sample of comprised of n = 177 nursing students, n1 = 121 undergraduate students and n2 = 56 postgraduate students. The collection of the empirical data was carried out using a fully structured and Self-reported questionnaire which recorded their individual characteristics and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The statistical analysis was conducted using the software package SPSS. Results: State anxiety was not found to differ significantly between undergraduate and postgraduate students. While Trait and Total Anxiety differed significantly, showing higher mean levels for undergraduate students. Moreover, the students of the last two years of study had a higher mean level of State Anxiety compared to the students of the first year of study. Conclusions: The majority of undergraduate and postgraduate students showed relatively low levels of anxiety. Animportant factor to predict anxiety in undergraduate students was the year of study, while for the postgraduate students were age and marital status.
