Abstract
This entry provides an overview of the American Correctional Association (ACA) and its role as the premiere governing body for standards and guidelines among correctional practitioners in the United States. The goals of the ACA are outlined and discussed, making it clear that this organization serves as a key leadership entity within the field. The history of this organization, starting with its genesis as the National Prison Association in the late 1800s to its current day state of operations is presented. It is made clear that practitioners and scholars around the nation are impacted by the influence that the ACA has on correctional standards and practices.
