Sustainable Healthcare: A path to sustainability
Iiiee Master Thesis, 2012
Sustainable healthcare is becoming an increasingly prominent issue as the aspects and impacts of healthcare activities are acknowledged and discovered. However, 'sustainable healthcare' is a debatable concept, without consensus and used in a variety of ways by many organizations. This research project lays a foundation for working consistently with the concept. Traditional and modern performance measurements are combined to form the basis of a framework that supports criteria for levels in reaching sustainable healthcare. The concept of stakeholder theory and engagement further supports the formation of the framework with levels of stakeholder involvement and thus quality of action. Literature reviews and leaders from the sustainable healthcare field provided information that contributed to the organization of sustainability levels and hierarchy of criteria. Analysis and careful consideration of information provided by these sources aided in the creation of a guideline for a path to 'sustainable healthcare' and clarifies how healthcare facilities might operationalise the 'sustainable healthcare' concept.
Sustainable healthcare: how to assess and improve healthcare structures' sustainability
Annali di igiene : medicina preventiva e di comunità
Sustainability is a broad and debated subject, often difficult to be defined and applied into real projects, especially when dealing with a complex scenario as the one of healthcare. Many research studies and evaluation systems have handled this topic from different perspectives, but many limits and criticalities still have to be overcome to properly cope with actual needs. The Sustainable Healthcare project has been developed through three main phases: a deep study of the state of the art, unraveling pros and cons of available sustainability scoring systems; an accurate analysis of the stakeholders network and their needs; the realization of an objective evaluation framework, through scientific methods, as the ANP. The newly developed evaluation system takes into consideration all the three pillars of sustainability, analyzing social, environmental and economic sustainability through a set of criteria, specified by measurable indicators. So the system identifies both global sustain...
Emerging Trends in Green Healthcare Building Design of Saudi Arabia: A Sustainable Approach
Library Progress International, 2024
Different advantages are associated with green healthcare design in our modern world. This research examines the innovations in green healthcare design in Saudi Arabia, with a particular emphasis on integrating sustainable practices in line with Vision 2030. Some of the environmental concerns that will be addressed within the paper include the high levels of energy use and waste generation and the inefficiency in resource utilization experienced by traditional healthcare systems. The qualitative approach is employed to understand and appreciate the advances in green healthcare strategies, including revisiting existing research and analyses of pertinent case studies. The paper starts by discussing the origins and developments of green healthcare, explaining how it diverges from traditional models in that energy-efficient and eco-friendly processes and the use of building designs that incorporate nature are emphasized within the healthcare delivery systems. To show the implementation of the green design principles in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, two case studies-As-Salam Hospital and HMG Sehat Al Sharq at Al Khobar are conducted. As the key findings indicate, the green healthcare system development priorities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia include cutting carbon emissions and waste and promoting the healing environment through eco-friendly designs. The study shows how important architectural features are in enhancing the use of water, air, and light. The document also considers some new approaches that reduce the negative impact, such as solar energy, proper waste management, and telemedicine. A SWOT analysis determines the strength of the availability of government support, whereas financial and civic awareness is a threat. It is noted that green health system practices in Saudi Arabia are on an upward trajectory, but more efforts are needed to actualize the utmost outcome, focusing on citizen's engagement, policy frameworks, and technological advancement. The research enhances the global discourse that has taken root in sustainable healthcare by explaining how new approaches can transform the healthcare business in the Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION Nowadays several rating systems exist for the evaluation of the sustainability of buildings, but often their focus is limited to environmental and efficiency aspects. Hospitals are complex constructions in which many variables affect hospital processes. Therefore, a research group has developed a tool for the evaluation of sustainability in healthcare facilities. METHODOLOGY The paper analyses social sustainability issues through a tool which evaluates users' perception from a the quality and well-being perspective. It presents a hierarchical structure composed of a criteria and indicators system which is organised through a weighing system calculated by using the Analytic Network Process. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The output is the definition of a tool which evaluates how Humanisation, Comfort and Distribution criteria can affect the social sustainability of a building. CONCLUSION Starting from its application, it is evident that the instrument enables the improvement...
Making hospitals healthier: how to improve sustainability in healthcare facilities
Annali di igiene : medicina preventiva e di comunità
Debate about sustainable development has reached a peak, as it is now recognized worldwide by public opinion and, in general, by governments' political agendas. New hospitals need to be made more sustainable and existing ones must improve their standards: e.g. in Italy, more than 50% of all healthcare facilities were built before the Nineties, without any attention to environmental, social or economic sustainability. Thanks to a sustainability evaluating system (environmental, social and economic) designed by the Milanese University 'Politecnico di Milano', two healthcare facilities were analyzed and compared. Both structures have approximately 600 beds and are located in the Lombardy region but they were built in different decades: one was built in the Sixties while the other one was built very recently. The analysis focused on underlining criticalities, implementing redevelopment measures for sustainability and eventually understanding whether attention was truly being...
Sustainable Development in Healthcare
International Journal of Reliable and Quality E-Healthcare, 2015
The implementation of the concept of sustainable development in the establishment of “Green Hospital” is attracting growing interest. The health sector and, in particular, a hospital may affect the environment and the economy in the a) maximization of energy consumption b) waste of natural resources c) difficulty in waste management due to their rapidly increasing volume d) construction of non-friendly for people and environment buildings e) growing demand for funds to cover operating expenses. Moreover, it seems that the strategic planning of a Green Hospital can cause significant changes to: a) Energy saving – Green development – Environment protection; b) Building reconstruction; c) Improvement of provided services to citizens; d) Saving of financial resources. Therefore, efforts should be made to save energy and money in the hospitals through sustainable development projects. Finally, the Green Hospital has the potential to provide improved therapeutic results for patients and m...
Sustainable Development in Healthcare Facilities. Case Study: Swedish and Greek Hospital
Journal of Sustainable Development, 2020
In the past few years sustainable development has been in the center of attention among organizations around the world. The literature focuses mostly on the industry sector for its negative impact on the environment. However, a cautious study reveals that the healthcare sector similarly contributes to the climate change with a negative effect. The purpose of this study aims to analyze the ways (actions and plans) in which sustainable development is incorporated between a Greek and a Swedish healthcare facility. Relevant global literature and data were utilized together with the environmental reports of the two hospitals. In addition, a combined survey (interviews and quantitative research) was completed at the Greek facility to draw conclusions on the personnel’s knowledge and habits regarding sustainable development. The results highlighted the necessity to achieve sustainable development and the manner in which it has to be integrated into healthcare. Furthermore, the differences ...
Evaluation of a Sustainable Hospital Design based on its Social and Environmental Outcomes
The study assessed the performance of a newly-built sustainable hospital by comparing the thermal comfort of its patients and staff, and the ambient thermal conditions with those of two other hospitals with less sophisticated designs. Additionally, a facility management perspective was used to understand the role hospital administrators had in contributing to sustainable design outcomes and document the unanticipated challenges and unintended consequences of operating the newly-built sustainable hospital. Data were collected through thermal environment equipment, a thermal comfort survey, and interviews with care providers, patients, and facility managers. The hypotheses were that the hospital with the modern and more sophisticated sustainable ventilation design features would have a higher level of thermal comfort and lower heat index in the naturally ventilated wards than hospitals without those features and that thermal comfort would be higher in air-conditioned wards than naturally ventilated wards. The results indicate that sophisticated sustainable hospital designs can improve the ambient thermal environment and occupant thermal comfort but not all those features were necessary. The study also suggests the need for adopting an integrated sustainable design strategy to prevent or mitigate some of the facility operation challenges encountered. Additionally, the study proposes for a shift in thermal comfort standards and green building rating tools to meet the unique thermal comfort needs of hospital users.
