Availability and Use of Visual Teaching and Learning Materials in Teaching Geography at Nassarawa Education Zonal Office

The present study aimed at finding out if there are adequate visual teaching and learning mat eria ls for teaching Geography in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, and if these m a teria ls were been effectively and judiciously utilized by the teachers in teaching geography. The population of the study covers five secondary schools from five wards in Nasarawa L.G.A where a sample of 2 5 geography teachers both male and female was drawn. A questionnaire was used for the data collection while the data collected were analysed using the frequency and percentage distribution Table. The gathered data shown that visual materials were inadequate for the effective t ea ching of geography in Nasarawa L.G.A and the few available visual materials have not been effecti vely a nd judiciously utilized in teaching geography. The study has made certain recommendations that important visual materials like barometer, thermometer, rain gauge, wind vane, computers, projectors, and geography laboratory should be provided for the effective teaching and lea rning of geography, and the government should ensure that seminars and workshops are organized regularly for geography teachers to update and sensitize them of the importance of using visual materials and motivate them towards discharging their duties effectively.

Availability and use of visual materials in teaching geography

The population of the study covers all secondary schools in Minjibir Education Zone where a sample of 36 geography teachers both male and female out of the 37 geography teachers in the Zone was drawn. A questionnaire was used for the data collection while the data collected were analysed using the frequency and percentage distribution table. The gathered data shows that visual materials were inadequate for the effective teaching of geography in Minjibir Education Zone and the few available visual materials have not been effectively and judiciously utilised to teach geography. The study has made certain recommendations that important visual materials like barometer, thermometer, rain gauge, wind vane, computers, projectors e.t.c and geography laboratory must be provided for the effective teaching and learning of geography and the government must ensure that seminars and workshops are organised for geography teachers to make them aware of the importance of using visual materials and motivate them towards discharging their duties effectively

A Study on the Uses of Instructional Materials in Teaching Senior Secondary School Geography in Kano Metropolis. A Case Study of 5 Selected Local Government Areas

Abstract The study examined the Uses of Instructional Materials in teaching Senior Secondary School Geography in Kano Metropolis. In the course of the study, a Survey Research Design was adopted using Questionnaire as the instrument for data collection. The population of the study is made up of 305 Geography Teachers, 107,238 Students and 171 Senior Secondary Schools in the 8 Local Government Areas that constitute Kano metropolis. Out of the population, 5 Local Government Areas, 10 Senior Secondary Schools, 21 Geography Teachers, and 450 Geography students were selected randomly. The collected data were analyzed using frequency distribution tables and simple percentages. As the findings revealed, Visual Materials (85.5%) are the major types of Instructional materials used in teaching Senior Secondary Schools in Kano Metropolis. The study also revealed that Geography Teachers have a “Somewhat-Negative Attitude” towards using Instructional materials in teaching, although the materials were identified to be insufficient. This might be the reason for mass failure in SSCE (WAEC and NECO) Examinations among Geography students in Kano Metropolis. Findings also revealed that Instructional Materials are indispensible tools in ensuring effective teaching and learning of Geography. The study therefore, recommends that Government, NGOs, and other Stakeholders concerned should improve commitments towards the appropriate provision and utilization of the materials.

Availability and utilization of Instructional Resources for Teaching Geography in Senior Secondary Schools in Osun State

This is a study on availability and utilization of instructional resources for teaching Geography in senior secondary schools in Osun State in view of delivering quality education as part of goal 4 of the sustainable development goal. Survey design was adopted for the research. The population consisted of all Geography teachers and 545 secondary schools in Osun State. Eighty (80) Geography teachers constituted the sample for the study while 30 schools were selected for observation. Two instruments were used for data collection; Instructional Resources and Strategies Observation Checklist (IRSOC) and Questionnaire on utilization of Instructional Resources (QUIR). Data collected were analyzed using frequency count and percentages. The results showed that instructional resources available in teaching Geography are projector (10%), wet and dry thermometer (26.67%), Geographical Charts (33.33%), chat of weather symbol (33.33%), Globe (73.33%), Topographical map (83.33%), Atlas (93.33%), and Geography textbooks (100%) while Stephenson screen, cup anemometer, tube anemometer, rain gauge, sunshine recorder, wind vane, satellites images, geographical library, geographical garden were not available in secondary schools in Osun state. From the available instructional resources, results showed that Chart of Weather Symbols (60%), Globe (72.72%), Geography Textbooks (76.67%), Topographical maps (80%) and Wall maps (100%) were the instructional resources adequately available. The result obtained revealed that resources are not readily available in secondary schools in Osun state.

An Assessment of the Adequacy of Geography Teaching Aids in Public Secondary Schools in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria

This study examined the adequacy of geography teaching aids in public secondary schools in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. Specifically, five types of aids including maps, charts, pictures, thermometers and models were examined. To achieve this aim, this study examined the types, number, adequacy and problems of geography teaching aids availability as its objectives. The study utilized primary and secondary data sources. Primary data were sourced from ten secondary schools using the questionnaire, interviews and personal observation. Geography is an optional subject in the secondary schools in Nepal. This study examines the challenges of using instructional materials in the teaching of geography in community secondary schools in Kathmandu district of Bagmati Province. Eight geography teachers were selected on the basis of purposive sampling out of community schools offering geography as an optional subject. The semi structured interview method are used for data collection. The interviews are recorded on an audio recorder and then after transcribed. Enhancing Learning of Geography: A Focus on Video Use

Prevailing poor performance by students in examination and misconception they hold about some topics in Geography have aroused concern in educational field on the cause and need to alleviate the situation. Conventional approach which is widely used need to be integrated with technological innovations in teaching to alleviate the situation of low enrolment and conform to expected national quality and standard in Geography. The Homa Bay district Mean Standard Score of 6 C+ has been recorded for the last four years and low enrolment as students tend to shy away from the subject. The main objective was to investigate if video can enhance learning. Cohun’s and Edgar’s theories on hearing, sight and learning experience arranged in hierarchy informed this study. The study adopted Experimental research design involving pre test-post test control group design. The target population was provincial schools in Homa Bay district. The sample size was 194.Stratified random sampling procedure was used to obtain four schools. The experimental group was exposed to video for three weeks and the control group was exposed to conventional teaching for the same duration. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to collect data. Post-test was administered to all students and questionnaire to all respondents. Data was analyzed through use of inferential statistics which were t-test and Chi-square. Descriptive statistics that involved means, frequencies, percentages and standard deviation were also used. Hypothesis was rejected at significant level of 0.05. The results of the study show that use of video in teaching enhanced learning achievement. It was established that video motivates, enhance understanding, retention and participation. The findings of this study have created awareness and need for integrating video in teaching and learning for improved performance in Geography. The following recommendations were made. Use of video be supported at policy level, Geography curriculum to embrace ICT, teachers to be equipped with skills and knowledge they need to use video. Availability and Utilization of Instructional Materials in Teaching Geography in Secondary Schools

This study examines the availability and utilization of instructional materials in geography teaching in community secondary schools in Kathmandu district. There are altogether sixteen community secondary schools offering geography as an optional subject. Out of sixteen secondary schools offering geography as an optional subject eight schools are selected for the study on the basis of random sampling. The sample for this study comprised of one hundred seventy four students from selected secondary schools. The survey and observation are used for primary data collection. The data are analyzed using percentage. The results reveal that printed and graphic instructional materials for teaching geography in secondary schools are available and their utilization is of high extent while audio, visual and audio-visual instructional materials for teaching geography are not available sufficiently and they are used less often in the classrooms for teaching geography. Geography: Utilization Of Geography Learning Media At High School

The purpose of this study is to find out about the availability of learning media, including 1) Type, 2) Amount, and 3) Conditions. The research carried out is descriptive research with research data is quantitative data. The study was conducted in 23 high schools in Karanganyar Regency. The population in this study were all high school geography teachers and high school students of class X, XI Social Program and XII Social Program in Karanganyar Regency, which consisted of 17 state high schools and 6 private high schools. The high school which was used as the research subject was determined by proportional random sampling technique to obtain 13 high schools. Futhermore, the samples of teachers and students was determined by purposive sampling, where in each school took 1 teacher respondent and 6 students, so the total sample of teachers was 13 people and students were 78 people. The technique of collecting data in the study uses questionnaire, interview and observation methods. The analysis technique used is descriptive statistical analysis. In summary, from this research found the data condition of geography learning media of high school in Karanganyar Regency in 2016 were obtained, including; 1) The most types of media are Atlas, Pictures, Globe, Maps, Slide Powerpoint, and Computer / Laptop devices, 2) The number of media is classified as medium or available in every media in the school, and 3) The condition of the media is classified as poorly maintained for physical media and is very well maintained for media based on Digital Information Technology.

The Effectiveness of Interactive Video in the Achievement of Geography for Sixth Grades in Madaba Governorate Schools

this study investigates the Effectiveness of an Interactive Educational Video on the Academic Achievement in Geography for Sixth-Grade Students in Madaba Governorate Schools. To achieve the objective of the study, the study was used as a quasi-experimental approach. The sample was chosen purposefully. The sample of the study consisted of (60) students of the sixth grade from the Ibntaimia School in Madaba Governate from the second semester in the university year 2019/2020. The study sample was distributed in an experimental group that has (30) students who were educated on the geography subject using an interactive video and the control group that has (30) students who were educated on the same geography subject using a traditional method. The achievement test (pre & post-test) was prepared in one instrument, and the achievement test was distributed after testing the validity and reliability of the instrument, The results of this study presented that there were significant differences at the level of significant (α≤0.05) between the experimental and control group for the benefit of the experimental group in the post-test, which were studied using the interactive video. The study detected the effectiveness of the interactive video in increasing academic achievement in geography. According to the results, the researcher recommended using interactive video in schools because of its effective way of increasing academic achievement.
