Social learning of vocal structure in a nonhuman primate?

Background: Non-human primate communication is thought to be fundamentally different from human speech, mainly due to vast differences in vocal control. The lack of these abilities in non-human primates is especially striking if compared to some marine mammals and bird species, which has generated somewhat of an evolutionary conundrum. What are the biological roots and underlying evolutionary pressures of the human ability to voluntarily control sound production and learn the vocal utterances of others? One hypothesis is that this capacity has evolved gradually in humans from an ancestral stage that resembled the vocal behavior of modern primates. Support for this has come from studies that have documented limited vocal flexibility and convergence in different primate species, typically in calls used during social interactions. The mechanisms underlying these patterns, however, are currently unknown. Specifically, it has been difficult to rule out explanations based on genetic relatedness, suggesting that such vocal flexibility may not be the result of social learning. Results: To address this point, we compared the degree of acoustic similarity of contact calls in free-ranging Campbell's monkeys as a function of their social bonds and genetic relatedness. We calculated three different indices to compare the similarities between the calls' frequency contours, the duration of grooming interactions and the microsatellite-based genetic relatedness between partners. We found a significantly positive relation between bond strength and acoustic similarity that was independent of genetic relatedness. Conclusion: Genetic factors determine the general species-specific call repertoire of a primate species, while social factors can influence the fine structure of some the call types. The finding is in line with the more general hypothesis that human speech has evolved gradually from earlier primate-like vocal communication.
Vocal similarities and social bonds in Campbell's monkey (Cercopithecus campbelli)

This study examined variations of social call structures in female Campbell's monkeys. The comparison of frequency modulations using a similarity index revealed that each individual presented one to three variants. Some variants were shared by two to several individuals, often associated with play. On the contrary, vocal divergence was observed in a socially isolated animal and a negative correlation appeared between similarity index and the frequency of avoidance. This preliminary study gives the first evidence of variant sharing between group members in primates.
Socially Meaningful Vocal Plasticity in Adult Campbell's Monkeys (Cercopithecus campbelli)

Campbell's monkeys (Cercopithecus campbelli) frequently exchange vocalizations, the combinedharmonic calls, with individuals responding to one another's calls. Previous work has shown that these calls can be grouped into several structural variants. Adult females differ in their variant repertoires, which may change during their adult life, particularly after changes in the group composition. Playback of females' currently produced variants triggered vocal responses from other group members, whereas the same females' former, no longer used variants and those of stranger females never did. In contrast, former variants caused long-term cessation of vocal behavior, whereas stranger variants had no effect. Data showed that monkeys were able to distinguish between the different types of variants, indicating that these calls form part of a long-term social memory.

Although the vocal repertoire of nonhuman primates is strongly constrained by genetic, a growing number of studies evidence socially determined flexibility. According to Snowdon et al. [Social Influences on Vocal Development (University Press, Cambridge, 1997), pp. 234-248], calls with a higher social function (affiliative or agonistic) would be expected to show more flexibility than lesser social calls. Owren and Rendall [Evol. Anthropol., 10, 58-71 (2001)] nuanced this by defending a structure-function relationship. Calls with particular acoustic properties, which directly influence the listener's affect, would be less individually distinctive than calls involved in an affective conditioning process. These hypotheses were tested in Campbell's monkeys using telemetric recordings. This is the first detailed description of female Campbell's monkeys' vocal repertoire emphasizing a possible relationship between social function and flexibility level. The vocal repertoire displayed an "arborescent" organization (call type, subtype, and variants). The highest number of subtypes and the greatest acoustic variability, within and among individuals, were found in calls associated with the highest affiliative social value. However, calls associated with agonism were the most stereotyped, whereas less social alarm calls were intermediate. This only partially validate the hypothesis of Snowdon et al. In accordance with Owren and Rendall's hypotheses, the level of individual distinctiveness was minimum for noisy pulsed calls and maximum for calls involved in affiliative interactions. V
Babbling' and social context in infant monkeys: parallels to human infants

Although only humans use spoken language, the vocal communication of many animals shares some features with language. Within the context of their family, normal children and young non-human primates develop proficiency in the nuances of their speciesspecific vocal communication system. Engaging in speech-like phonetic activity, or babbling, occurs in all normal children regardless of their native language. Similar periods of vocal development have not been described previously for non-human primates. However, in the pygmy marmoset, a South American monkey, we found that the primary vocal behavior of infants parallels many characteristics of human infant babbling. These analogous features include universality, repetition, use of a subset of the adult vocal repertoire, recognizably adult-like vocal structure and lack of a clear vocal referent. Also, like human infants, young marmosets develop in a closely knit family unit that includes both parents and often older siblings. In this context, the babbling-like behavior of the marmoset infant stimulates interaction with caregivers, thereby serving a key role in the infant's own development. These developmental and social processes indicate that the study of vocal development in non-human primate species can provide insights into the function of babbling in humans.
The development of a greeting signal in wild chimpanzees

Adult chimpanzees produce a unique vocal signal, the pant-grunt, when encountering higher-ranking group members. The behaviour is typically directed to a specific receiver and has thus been interpreted as a 'greeting' signal. The alpha male obtains a large share of these calls, followed by the other adult males of the group. In this study, we describe the development of pantgrunting behaviour from the first grunt-like calls of newborn babies to the fully developed pant-grunts in adults. Although babies produce grunts from very early on, they are not directed to others until about 2 months of age. Subsequently, socially directed grunting steadily increases in frequency to peak around 7 months of age, but then decreases again to reach a nadir in older infants and juveniles, while the specificity in use increases. During adolescence, grunt production increases again with grunts given most frequently to socially relevant individuals. As young chimpanzees are closely affiliated to their mothers for the first decade of their lives, we also compared the grunting patterns of mothers and their offspring, which revealed some influences in pant-grunt production. In conclusion, the acquisition of pant-grunting behaviour in chimpanzees is a long-lasting process with distinct developmental phases in which social influences by the mother and other group members are likely to play a role.
