Hydrological Analysis of Volcanic Terrane: Lower Basin of the Rio Grande De San Miguel El Salvador
International Association Of Scientific Hydrology. Bulletin, 1970
Standard hydrological methods have been used to evaluate the water resources of a volcanic area that comprises the Lower Basin o f the Rio Grande de San Miguel, El Salvador. The area of investigation included study of approximately 645 square kilometers. The lower San Miguel Basin consists of a faulted valley situated at the base of a series o f old and recent volcanoes bounding the valley on the East, a tuff block to the South, and consolidated volcanics (lahars) on the West and North. The valley fill consists of pyroclastics which diminish in particle size with distance from the volcanoes (Lapilli to ash), in the southern portion; however, the pyroclastics may be interbedded with lake deposits. A principal objective of the evaluation was to assess the feasibility of irrigating 10,000 hectares of the valley. Results based upon the period of study suggest that almost half of the annual precipitation infiltrates into the ground. Of this quantity, about one third is accounted for by the existing hydrological balance between recharge and depletion. The remainder moves from the valley to the San Miguel River as groundwater runoff and, if retained, is sufficient in quantity to meet the full anticipated irrigation demand.
Characterization of Surface Geology and Hydrogeology in the Upper Ulua River Basin, Honduras
2021
This research includes a hydrogeologic assessment in and around La Union, Honduras to determine the contribution of groundwater to the surface water system and understand the geological control of groundwater storage and movement. Field methods were employed and focused on spring characterization, geochemical signatures, and structural data. Field data was gathered, and locations determined using cellular-integrated GPS signal and the Fulcrum mapping software mobile application. During the summer of 2017, data on 111 geologic points and 34 water points were collected to understand the hydrogeology of the region. Streams and springs were monitored for pH, flow characteristics and conductance as a measure of total-dissolved-solids (TDS). TDS ranged from 22.6 to 485 mg/L with higher values indicating groundwater influx into the surface system. In comparison, lower TDS values are attributed to runoff. Structural information was collected using a Brunton transit compass for strike and di...
Engineering geology mapping in the southern part of the Metropolitan Area of San Salvador
The use of classic geologic maps, where geological layers are grouped according to their age or origin, makes difficult the interpretation and use for civil engineer design or urban planning to people without deep knowledge in geology. Due to this reason engineering geological mapping has been carried out in the southern part of the Metropolitan Area of San Salvador using the stripe method. The objective of the methodology is that geological information, geological hazards and geotechnical recommendations as well, can be represented and grouped depending on the intrinsic characteristics of each zone. This information can be easily interpreted for urban planners, private builders and government agencies. The weakness in the compilation and research of geological and geotechnical information in El Salvador, are some of the reasons for the current problems that experiment the region, indicating the importance of improving risk management, as well as soil and rocks mechanics.

This paper gives an account of the implementation of geomorphological, hydrogeological, hydrochemical and isotopic techniques to understand groundwater-surface water interactions in a multiple use area, Los Padres-La Brava Corridor (SE of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). The isophreatic map reveals a regional flow from the SW to NE sector, and allowed us to define the effluent-influent behavior of the permanent wetlands in the area. Hydrochemistry and isotopic analysis confirm this flow system in the unconfined aquifer and the relationships among the different water sources. Obtained data indicate that the recharge to the aquifer is influenced by the natural rainfall input, wetland discharge and the concentration of surface run-off from the range fringes to inter-range depressions. Wetlands in the corridor are considered recharge areas for the aquifer system. Moreover, they contribute to water quality as well as groundwater and stream availability. This study proposes a holistic approach to water resources management recognizing most of the components of the hydrological cycle and its interactions with other natural resources and ecosystems, both aquatic and terrestrial ones. In this sense, the idea of water resources assessment in an integrated way for an efficient management, including wetlands, streams and groundwater, is reinforced in this work.

The objective of this work is to elaborate a thematic map of the intrinsic vulnerability of the aquifer in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (RMS), which constitutes the first step for the assessment of the danger to contamination and protection of the groundwater quality. For this, the GOD (FOSTER; HIRATA, 1998) methodology was used. In the RMS, four vulnerability patterns were found: negligible, low; moderate and high. The GOD method clearly showed the natural vulnerability to contamination, however, it involves simplifications in hydrogeological information, which requires attention when reclassifying, processing the data and interpreting the results.
