High school and university students' knowledge and attitudes regarding biotechnology

Biotechnology has a considerable importance in Turkish biology curriculum. This study was designed to explore or indicate Turkish high school and university students' knowledge and attitudes toward biotechnology. A total number of 352 high school and 276 university students were invited to the study. The Biotechnology Knowledge Questionnaire (BKQ) with 16 items and Biotechnology Attitude Questionnaire (BAQ) with 37 items were used as data collection instruments. The statistically significant correlation was observed between the level of biotechnology knowledge and the subdimensions of attitudes toward biotechnology. We found no statistically significant difference between high school and university students' knowledge of biotechnology. In contrast, university students showed more positive attitudes toward biotechnology than did high school students. However, the effect of gender was equivocal; therefore, it did not support a ''gender paradox'' hypothesis. Our results suggest that although students' appreciation of (agricultural) biotechnology is relatively positive, the understanding of biotechnology processes is superficial and attitudes toward shopping genetically modified products are therefore negative. The possible impact of current science and biology curriculum, and also biotechnology news given in media on Turkish students' views of biotechnology is discussed.

The tremendous development of science and technology has influenced many aspects of our everyday lives, society and environment. A good example of such technology is biotechnology. However, besides its promise, this technology has also raised several controversial issues to which answers are not easily available. With increasing knowledge and applications on one side and controversy on the other the teaching of science is, anything but easy. The speed of development of biotechnology within agriculture, industry, and medicine has changed our lives, and we need a biotechnological literacy to understand it. This implies that teachers in primary schools need to be biotechnologically literate in order to educate future generations. The aim of this study was to investigate Swedish pre-service primary school teachers’ knowledge of and attitudes towards biotechnology and contextualize the results by comparing them with a corresponding group of Spanish teachers. Data was collected using the established questionnaire instrument Biotech XXI and analyzed statistically. The findings demonstrate that Swedish pre-service primary school teachers have knowledge gaps relating to the basic genetic concepts that underpin biotechnology, although they are aware of biotechnological applications. High School Students’ Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding Biotechnology Applications
Th e purpose of this study was to investigate high school students’ knowledge and attitudes regarding biotechnology and its various applications. In addition, whether students’ knowledge and attitudes diff ered according to age and gender were also explored. Th e Biotechnology Knowledge Questionnaire (BKQ) with 16 items and the Biotechnology Attitude Questionnaire (BAQ) with 37 items which were adapted into Turkish were administrated to 352 high school students. Th e data were analyzed by making use of both inferential and descriptive statistics. Th e results showed that students attained poor knowledge regarding biotechnology and its various applications. We found no statistically significant diff erence between male and female high school students with regard to biotechnology knowledge. On the other hand, we found significant impact of age on biotechnology knowledge. Th e eff ects of gender and age were found significant on attitudes. Furthermore, a significant diff erence was observed between male and female students with regard to attitudes toward biotechnology and its applications in favor of males. Th e older the students were the more positive attitudes they had.

The impact of genetic engineering on peoples' everyday life has become present reality. In order to establish the level of the available schoolchildren and university students' knowledge of biotechnology, various investigations have been conducted. However, the current situation in Lithuania remains unclear. A total of 287 students -pre-service teachers from Lithuanian universities participated in the survey focused on attitudes to and knowledge of biotechnology. Our results confirmed the conclusions reached in other countries: students' knowledge of biotechnology is very miserable and attitudes frequently contradict one another. Research results clearly show the necessity for the increase and development of teacher training in the field of biotechnology and point to the ability to obtain and apply knowledge at international level in work practice. Research confirmed the opinion that the history and principles of developing biotechnologies as well as a legal and institutional system of using biotechnologies in Lithuania and the European Union needed to be more exhaustively introduced to all students.

This study presents a descriptive content analysis of the research trends of postgraduate theses conducted in the field of science education on biotechnological concepts in Turkey between 2000-2020. In line with the aim of the study, 65 postgraduate theses in total were examined by searching the database of the Council of Higher Education (CoHE) National Thesis Center. In this study using document analysis, one of the qualitative research designs, theses were analyzed according to years, universities, study subjects, concepts, methods, data collection tools, sampling, and sample size. Undoubtedly, biotechnology has a tremendous impact on our daily lives. As a result of this and in parallel to the advancement of knowledge in this field of applied research, consumer awareness of the potential benefits and risks of this technology has steadily increased, leading to a thorough investigation of the public perception of biotechnology in the past years. Indeed, it has become clear that it is in the general interest of science and especially of applied research to inform the public of its advances. A promising next step is to strengthen biotechnology communication in scholastic institutions. In this paper, we investigate the perception of biotechnology in a specific target group, namely high-school students in the 16-20-year-old age range. We conducted a questionnaire-based survey on a total of 1410 students in six European countries to investigate students' perception, concern, scientific knowledge, and awareness. Our data revealed some unexpected patterns of acceptance and concern about biotechnology. Knowledge analysis indicated that pupils lack specific knowledge about biotechnological applications and their interest in biotechnology appeared to be linked to knowledge. Analysis of specific questions about teaching practices at schools suggests that a better targeted choice in media as vehicles for information together with selected speakers could be instrumental in increasing students' interest in science and more specifically in biotechnology.

In this study, profiling of prospective teachers for their interests on biotechnology in higher education institutions has been conducted and in conjunction with this, the extent of biotechnology subjects in the textbooks of higher education institutions has been investigated. A questionnaire has been prepared to reveal the educational level on biotechnology in higher education institutions and the interest whom prospective teachers have in biotechnology. The prepared questionnaire has been applied to 100 prospective teachers receiving education in the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Applied Sciences Education in Kazim Karabekir Faculty of Education at Ataturk University. As a result of the questionnaire applied to prospective teachers, it has been determined that 54% of the prospective teachers are fond of the subjects related to biotechnology. Also, the assessment carried out for showed that most of the prospective teachers (65%) recognize the importance of biotechnology but also they believe that the subjects of biotechnology in higher education are not covered enough and the information given is not sufficient and the necessary explanations are not made about its importance.
Background: Progressive natural sciences, for example, biotechnology, are assuming control over the million-dollar businesses because of their approaching applications, just as their significance in the well-being of living creatures. This investigation aims to decide the variables associated with choosing this field, their vocation inclinations, educational awareness, and knowledge of biotechnology. Methods: The study undertook at Debre Birhan University through a pre-approved questionnaire given to the students joined in the biotechnology department. A total of 220 students, 130 (60.46%) females, 85 (39.53%) males, and 5 (2.32%), failed to give their data. Students who were involved in this study gave their agreement to record their responses. Student replies were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the social sciences (SPSS) [version 20.0]. Results: Out of 220 Biotechnology students, 215 participants filled the questionnaire; therefore, the response rate was (97.72%). Of 215 respondents, 116 (53.95%) were not mindful of the scope of biotechnology before getting admission in the biotechnology program, 20 (9.30%) were interested in research. In contrast, 29 (13.48%) were either indifferent or indeterminate about their choices. Conclusion: Almost all participants, 186 (86.51%), we're able to seek a job in biotechnology after their graduation, and Personal curiosity was the prominent factor 139 (64.65%) included in the choice succeeded by status 31 (14.41%) and income 15 (6.97%) correspondingly
