Behavioral Impact of Social Media Usage on the Academic Performance of State University Students in Sri Lanka

Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram like social media has become a vital feature of human lives, providing people with easy access to information and entertainment. Due to its widespread use among undergraduate students, study aims to identify the behavioral impact of social media usage on the academic performance of state university students in Sri Lanka. In this study, 392 undergraduates from 16 state universities were selected using voluntary sampling method.The study media use and undergraduate academic performance, and regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between variables. The results showed that all respondents used at least one social media platform, and the majority of them spent more than an hour on social media platforms per day.Whats App was the mostly used social media platform among undergraduates. The study found that undergraduates mostly used social media for entertainment during lectures and that revealed a substantial negative correlation between social media use and academic performance among undergraduates. To mitigate this negative impact, the study implies students should control their social has become an integral part of humans' day-today lives, particularly among undergraduate students. However, excessive usage of social media can have compromising their performance.

Investigating the Effect of Social Media on the Students’ Academic Performance

The objectives of the present study are to assess social media impact onthe academic performance of the student. Social media has developed sharedglobal fashion which has feast across virtually everywhere in the world.The sample was consisting of undergraduate students of the leadinguniversity in Lahore. A convenience sampling technique was employed.Self-administered data from 83 students were collected from the Likertscale. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the data on studentaddictiveness, exposure to social media, the influence of social media onacademic performance, age and gender. Results suggested that socialmedia addictiveness affects the performance of the students, whereas,age usage has an influence on the social media network. The researchersrecommend that social media is used for academic commitments. Thestudents can make balance amid academic activities and chit-chattingthereby monitoring their health at regular intervals.

EXAMINING THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA USE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS: A STUDY AT SHAHEED BENAZIR BHUTTO UNIVERSITY, SHAHEED BENAZIRABAD

The current study is an attempt to determine the intensity of social media use among university students and the impact of social media on students’ academic performance. The survey based on the questionnaire was run to gather the required data for which 100 copies of the questionnaire were administered among the students – both 65 male and 35 female respondents. However, Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp contributed equally to be used among the respondents at the highest extent of 95%. Whereas the second most used tool was Twitter contributing 60%. The majority of the respondents (80%) spent more than 5 hours regularly on social media. The homes were the places wherein the majority of the respondents contributing 45% use social media. The purpose of social media use among the majority of the respondents (60%) was to exchange academic things with friends. The respondents contributing 60% declined to believe if social media use negatively affects their academic performance. The majority of them contributing 55% were positive towards the statement if the social media use had improved their academic works. Social Media: Does Usage Have Impact on Academic Performance

University students are continually engaged with and exposed to information technology particularly social media for various motives. They spend their daily activities substantially on social media due to the availability of mobile devices and accessibility to internet that make utilizing social media more convenient. Due to inconclusive empirical evidence on the impact of social media, this study investigates the impact of social media usage intensity on the academic performance of accounting students after considering the students' personal attributes such as proficiency, gender, semester and ages differences. Adopting quantitative approach, questionnaire survey was distributed to accounting students in Melaka state and data from 113 accounting students were gathered. The result suggests that social media usage intensity has negative impact on students' performance. With regards to students' attributes, proficiency, gender and semester have impact on their performance. However, the findings may be different if the respondents come from rural areas. Thus, future research should address latest social media platforms in different regions and fields. This study is expected to contribute to the knowledge on social media usage and provide guidance to academics in adopting social media as part of teaching and learning activities in enhancing accounting students' performance.

Impact of Social Media on Academic Performance of Students: A Case Study of Sargodha University (2016-2017

This study examines the impact of social media on the academic performance of students at University of Sargodha. The rationale behind the study is to find out whether or not the exposure of the students to social media has effect on their academic performance. It is quantitative study where survey research method was adopted, employing the questionnaire as an instrument of data collection. A sample of 120 respondents were selected through convenient sampling technique. Statistical analysis of the data was done through SPSS. The findings show that social media has positive effect on academic performance of university students. Findings also show that majority of student spend less than 5 hour per day for academic purposes. Findings also reveal that WhatsApp is the most used social media's app by students of University of Sargodha.

IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Despite the unhealthy impact of social media many students are engrossed in spending most of their hours on social media sites which includes the most popular Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Social media has embedded a negative image upon many minds however it is also perceived as a pathway to develop vital knowledge and social skills among students beyond their campus walls (Wang, Chen and Liang, 2011). Social media has equal positive or negative aspects but many students are using these sites on a regular basis. Over the years many studies have been conducted over the impact of social media on academic performance of students and it demonstrates a strong relationship between the two variables. Therefore, our research aims to study the relationship between the social media and students' academic performance in Pakistan.

IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

India is the third biggest country in terms of internet users in the world, with a high social and mobile audience. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, etc diverting students from their studies. Students spend more time on social media than they do do using personnel email. Even Though, there is loss of privacy and safety, social media provides opportunities for connecting with friends, classmates, and people with shared interest. Today, the main aim of the student should be education and their future career. However, many students rely on the accessibility of information on social media. That means reduced focus on learning and retaining information. The study also points out the popularity of social networking sites among students community. The social networking sites and social media have revolutionized the world, bringing us closer than ever before. However, students can exploit this and use it for a better life, a better tomorrow. It should be used to connect, stay in touch, share views but not waste time on. The sample size for the study is 100. A questionnaire is designed to determine the various factors of social media that have impact on student's education. Variables identified are gender, education, social influence, and academic performance.

Impact of Social Media Usage on Academic Performance of Tertiary Institution Students

The study sought to assess the relationship between student’s use of social media and academic performance of tertiary institutions students in Ghana with a focus on Accra and Tema Metropolis. Questionnaire was used for collecting data. Out of one thousand copies of the questionnaire distributed, a valid response of 70.0 % was retrieved. SPSS computer software was used to measure descriptive, correlation, regression among others. The study revealed that all the constructs of social media (dependent variable) had a significant positive relationship thus the independent variables (Facebook, Whatsapps, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, and Twitter) at level 0.01 with the dependent variable academic performance.

The COVID-19 lockdown has led to an increase in the usage of mobile phones and social media among adolescents. As adolescents utilise mobile phones and social media for educational and pleasure purposes, they grow increasingly attached. As a result, it's critical to dig deep into the relationship between teenage social media usage and academic success. The goal of this study was to design a social media usage scale (SMUS) for adolescents and utilise it to measure social media participation among higher secondary school students.
