Thermal control of parallelly connected thermoelectric coolers in a uniform temperature field, 2022
The possibility of using a set of thermoelectric devices to control the thermal regime of a number of thermo-dependent and heat-loaded elements of radio-electronic equipment, which are subject to increased requirements for reliability indicators and dynamic characteristics, is considered. A mathematical model of a thermoelectric device has been developed for a uniform temperature field, a typical range of power dissipation of the products used, a range of standard values of the supply voltage, and a fixed geometry of thermoelement legs. A relation is obtained for determining the relative operating current depending on the relative temperature difference at a given supply voltage, the geometry of the thermoelement branches, and the magnitude of the thermal load. The region of real values of the relative operating current in the zone of relative temperature differences is determined for a given geometry of branches and thermal load. An analysis is made of the relationship between the relative operating current of a single-stage thermoelectric cooler and the coefficient of performance, the amount of energy expended, the heat-removing capacity of the radiator, the time to reach a stationary mode, and the probability of failure-free operation. The dependence of the relative failure rate and the probability of failure-free operation, the amount of energy expended, the heat-removing capacity of the radiator, and the number of thermoelements on the supply voltage of the thermoelectric cooler has been studied. This made it possible to evaluate the control features and identify the effectiveness of the control actions when the coolers are connected in parallel in a uniform temperature field. The possibility of choosing the optimal supply voltage is shown, taking into account a number of restrictive factors in terms of weight, size, energy, dynamic and reliability characteristics of a complex of thermoelectric coolers as part of systems for ensuring thermal regimes of heat-loaded radio-electronic equipment.
Control of a thermoelectric cooling unit complex mixed electrical connection in an uneven temperature field, 2022
A possibility of optimal thermal management of a number of temperature-dependent and heat-laden elements of radio electronic equipment with different power dissipation in an uneven temperature field using a set of thermoelectric cooling devices with mixed electrical connection and fixed geometry of thermocouple branches has been considered. Ratios for determining the relative operating current corresponding to the minimum supply voltage at a given thermal load for different temperature gradients and thermocouple branch geometries are derived. The possibility of selecting a supply voltage for a group of thermoelectric coolers with parallel electric connection using both analytical and graphical methods of solving a system of algebraic equations of first and second orders is shown. The basic parameters, reliability indices and dynamic characteristics of a thermoelectric cooler complex with mixed electrical connection when a group of thermoelectric coolers with series electrical connection operates at maximum cooling capacity and supply voltage variation of a group of coolers with parallel electrical connection are evaluated. Analysis of the research results showed the possibility of selecting the optimum supply voltage for a group of thermoelectric coolers with parallel electric connection in the interrelation of energy, mass-dimensional and dynamic characteristics, taking into account the reliability indicators of the complex as a whole. It is shown that by reducing the supply voltage of a group of thermoelectric coolers with parallel electric connection included in the complex, the energy, mass-size and dynamic characteristics are improved, and the reliability of the complex with mixed electric connection in an uneven temperature field is increased.
Compact design of thermoelectric cooler and its performance analysis
1ST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MANUFACTURING, MATERIAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (ICMMSE-2019), 2019
Thermoelectric cooling is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of recovering waste heat and convert it to obtain required cooling effect. A 127 couple thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is taken and its performance is analyzed. Also focus has been made to get an optimal and compact design with a better cooling capacity. Simulation is carried out in COMSOL Multiphysics 5.0 by varying parameters such as size and cross section of thermoelectric leg, number of couples in the module, thickness of copper conductor and the most important parameter the semiconductor material. Choosing Bismuth Telluride as semiconducting material, the cooling capacity is found to be 21.04 W when the TEC legs are made in circular cross section with 0.2 cm leg length and 41.87 W when leg length is 0.1 cm with copper plate thickness of 0.05cm which is almost double. With Bismuth antimony as a semiconductor material cooling effect is measured to be 538.38W for the same configuration which makes any designer to incline towards choosing this material. Non-linear circular cross section leg TEC, Bismuth Antimony as semiconducting material is giving a better cooling capacity than a non-linear square cross section leg TEC, Bismuth Telluride as material. For a given cooling capacity the size of TEC can be minimized since the results of 126 couple TEC is showing just 0.1 % lesser value as that of 127 couple TEC.

Improvement In The COP Of Thermoelectric Cooler
International Journal of Scientific & Technology Research, 2016
This paper described the study for heat transfer through thermoelectric cooler (TEC) by use of multistage thermoelectric module. To satisfy the heat dissipation of modern electronic element, thermal designers have to increase fin area and fan speed to improve its cooling capacity. However, the increase of fin area is restricted by the space. Besides, the increase of fan speed would induce noise, which damages human health. So air cooling by fan is hardly to meet the requirement of modern electronic component. Recently, thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is applied to electronic cooling with the advantages of small size, quietness and reliability. A typical thermoelectric cooler consists of p-type and n-type semiconductor pellets connected electrically in series and sandwiched between two ceramic substrates. Whenever direct current passes through the circuit, it causes temperature differential between TEC sides. As a result, one face of TEC, which is called cold side, will be cooled while i...
A Design of Thermoelectric Cooler and Optimization
Design, analysis and optimization of a thermoelectric refrigerator was carried out in this work the systems use thermoelectric "peltier" refrigerators (thermoelectric modules) to produce cooling or heating. The design calculation are find the performance curve of the thermoelectric module with the purpose of is find by simulation. Simulation results were compared with the practical data. The system simulation shows that exist a cheapest heat sink used for the thermoelectric refrigerator. the thermoelectric refrigerator with an air-cooled heat sink with thermal resistance 0.2515°C/W. Comparison was done between Bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) and Antimony telluride(Sb2Te3) for the thermoelectric module. It was found that the bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) due to its low thermal conductivity and high See back coefficient at room temperature has higher figure of merit (Z) and thus performed better as compared to Antimony telluride. The design be capable of be ready either on basis of the highest value of the cooling capacity, or on the basis of the most excellent heat sink technology existing.
Optimization of two-stage thermoelectric coolers with two design configurations
Energy Conversion and Management, 2002
This article presents the optimization of two-stage thermoelectric (TE) coolers arranged in two practical design configurations, and the optimization methods can be extended to other multi-stage designs. The first arrangement is the conventional pyramid-styled multi-stage TE cooler, in which the supplied electric current is uni-directional with the top stage of the unit being the coldest. A second design configuration comprises the cuboid-styled multi-stage cooler, in which the supplied current can be alternated, and thus, the top and bottom stages can be switched between heating and cooling modes. Optimizations for the twostage TE coolers are performed at both its two optima, namely, the point of maximum cooling capacity and optimal coefficient of performance, or COP for short. In the first design of the TE cooler, the optimization goal is geared towards determining the optimum ratio of the number of TE modules between stages when the total number of modules is kept constant, while in the second design configuration, it is to solve for the optimum ratio of electric current between stages. Optimum design parameters for the two types of twostage TE coolers are compared on given conditions. For practical purposes, all properties of TEs are based on commercial TE materials.
Method for increasing the dynamic characteristics of thermoelectric coolers, 2021
The influence of the efficiency of the initial thermoelectric materials on the dynamics of the functioning of the thermoelectric cooling device for various characteristic current modes of operation in the range of operating temperature drops and heat load at a given geometry of thermoelement legs is considered. The parameters of thermoelectric materials of thermoelements are conventionally divided into three groups: used for batch production, laboratory research and maximum values. The criterion for choosing the operating mode of the thermoelectric cooler takes into account the mutual influence and weight of each of the limiting factors. Since the design conditions can be very diverse, simultaneously varying several limiting factors (constructive, energy and reliability), you can choose the most rational mode of operation. The analysis was carried out for typical current modes of operation of thermoelectric coolers: maximum cooling capacity, maximum cooling capacity at a given current, maximum coefficient of performance, minimum failure rate. It is shown that with an increase in the efficiency of the initial thermoelectric materials, the time for reaching the stationary operating mode of the thermoelectric cooler, the required number of thermoelements, and the maximum temperature difference increase. A method is proposed for reducing the time constant of thermoelectric coolers due to the revealed relationship between the efficiency of thermoelectric materials and the dynamic characteristics of thermoelements. It is shown that an increase in the dynamic characteristics of thermoelectric coolers is achieved without changing the design documentation, manufacturing technology and additional climatic and mechanical testing of products.
A Simple and Intuitive Graphical Approach to the Design of Thermoelectric Cooling Systems
37th IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference, 2006
In various applications, thermoelectric active cooling systems can help maintain electronic devices at a desired temperature condition better than passive coolers. Thermoelectric Coolers (TEC) are especially useful when the temperature of a device needs to be precisely controlled. This study proposes a user-friendly graphical method for calculating the steady-state operational point of a TEC based active cooling system, including the heatsink role. The method is simple and intuitive and provides comprehensive information about the cooling system such as its feasibility, required heatsink, the TEC current, temperatures of the cold side and others. The method could help designers to examine and choose a thermoelectric module from catalogues to meet a specific cooling problem. To start using the method, designers need only the experimental TEC data provided by practically all manufacturers of such devices. The experimental results of this study verify the high accuracy of the proposed model and graphical approach. I.
