Counseling Housing Project Youth through Soccer and Rap (original) (raw)

Genèses, 2016

Abstract

This article provides an account of the counseling of adolescent and young male adults from working-class neighborhoods, approached through the activities of a rap nonprofit organization and a soccer club in a western suburb of Paris. We show that the counselors are far from forbidding young people’s more deviant behaviors and dispositions, which they largely tolerate and use to orient them toward more socially acceptable lifestyles. This guidance work results in making a selection among the “project youth” while sidelining a “minority of the worst.”
