The combination of stainless-steel material properties and the lightweight section properties makes the CFSS section the right choice for offshore steel structures. The demand for the stainless-steel sections in the construction industry is limited to a certain extent due to the higher cost; thus, the optimal use of stainless steel is vital. Openings to the web of CFSS Lipped Channel Beams (LCB) are introduced to facilitate the building services to reduce the floor height. Subsequently, the shear capacity is reduced due to the reduction of the web area. However, only very limited researches have been conducted so far to predict the reduced shear capacity of CFSS LCBs with circular web opening. Hence, this paper addresses a numerical study to investigate the shear behaviour and strength of cold-formed austenitic grade 1.4301 and duplex grade 1.4462 stainless steel LCB sections with unreinforced circular web openings. A detailed parametric study was carried out by developing 180 Finite Element Analyses (FEA) models to establish a wide-ranging shear strength database following the validation process with available shear test results. The analysis of the numerical results showed that the currently available reduction factor equations are either conservative or unsafe to use for the CFSS LCBs with circular openings. Hence, three sets of equations with different approaches to predict the shear capacity of CFSS LCBs with circular web opening are developed and presented in this paper.

An experimental and parametric study on steel beams with web openings

The use of steel beams with web openings (SBWOs) for structures such as industrial buildings and high-rise buildings has turned out to be extensive in recent times. There are numerous motives for which openings are kept. In this respect, an experimental investigation was planned and conducted on seven models of SBWOs. The initiative was to identify the maximum load behaviour, and deflection of steel beams with openings in the web. The performance of such beams has been considered only for vertical loads. Hot rolled steel beams of ISMB 100 with openings in the web were tested to failure. The beams were simply supported at the ends and subjected to a concentrated load applied at the mid-span. The openings considered in the experimental study are circular and rectangular only. All the beams were analysed by the finite element method by using general finite element analysis software ANSYS and the results were compared with those obtained experimentally. The test results found to be very useful for optimization of spacing-to-diameter ratio and aspect ratio of openings. The finite element results for deformation and ultimate strength shows good agreement with the corresponding values observed in the experiments. At last, a parametric study was carried out using finite element method to examine that which type of openings gives best performance during loading.

Finite Element Analyses of Cold-formed Stainless Steel Beam with Web Openings in Shear

ce/papers, 2019

In the recent years, an increase in the use of stainless steel in the construction industry has been witnessed, more specifically in exposed architectural applications and where total life economics, durability, improved resistance to aggressive environment etc. are prime deciding criteria. However, limited research has been undertaken on the shear behaviour and strength of cold-formed stainless steel beam with web openings. Hence a numerical study was undertaken to investigate the shear behaviour and strength of cold-formed stainless steel with web openings. Finite element models of simply supported cold-formed stainless steel Lipped Channel Beams with web openings were developed under a mid-span load. They were then validated with currently available shear test results and further used in a detailed parametric study. In this research, both stocky and slender cross-sections were considered. The ultimate shear capacities from finite element analyses confirmed that currently available design equations are inadequate to determine the shear capacities of stainless steel beams with web openings. Hence improved design equations were developed for the shear capacity of cold-formed stainless steel beams with web openings. This paper presents the details of this numerical study of cold-formed stainless steel beams with web openings, and the results..

Shear Capacity of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Beam with Elliptical Web Openings: Numerical Analyses

2019

Cold-formed stainless-steel sections are increasingly being used in the construction industry, for both architectural and structural applications. The excellent combination of mechan-ical properties and corrosion resistance makes stainless steel a very good material for structural applications. Due to the lack of design rules for stainless steel, the design rules for carbon steel have been generally adopted in the stainless-steel design. However, the prominent non-linear be-haviour of stainless steel, which is the main difference with carbon steel, makes the standards for carbon steel not always accurate in the stainless-steel design. The provision of web openings at appropriate locations in such sections is also important to avoid cutting holes at an inappropriate location during the implementation stage. The type of section and the shape of opening were primarily chosen based on the application. The scope of this study is however limited to stainless steel Lipped Channel Beams (LC...

STUDY OF STEEL BEAM WITH WEB OPENINGS: A REVIEW

The basis of this study is the serviceability requirement which arouse long after the structural erection has been completed. Beams with web openings can be competitive in such cases, even though more alternatives to solid web beams such as stub girders, trusses etc. are available and height limitation is common problem faced by designers in multistoried buildings due to economic requirements and aesthetical considerations. Substantial spaces are normally required to enable the passage for large pipes and ducts beneath steel beams which leads to uneconomic floor heights. Though web openings could lead to a significant decrease in beam’s load carrying capacity depending on the adopted openings shape, size and location but can also be very helpful and important from the point of economy. So this study is concerned with the influence of the web opening on the strength of compressive elements and web crippling strength of steel sections. And the parametric analysis to be focused on size and location of opening. The paper summarizes the relevant study of provisions as given in the corresponding design standard and software based finite element analysis carried out by different authors and review the problem to arrive at meaningful conclusion for the study. And suggestion regarding the scope of further work.
