Organizational Stress and Its Impact on Work Performance

Nowadays, in times of economic crisis, most managers or entrepreneurs have to cope with a lot of new job challenges which can easily transform into stressors. Work related stress is of growing concern because it has significant economic implications for the organization. Even if some stress is a normal part of life, excessive stress can influence one's productivity, health and emotions and it has to be taken under control. When people lose confidence, they refuse to take responsibilities, they get quickly irritated, they are unsatisfied of their job, their performance will be very low and the organization will be in danger. Fortunately, most managers and entrepreneurs know which stress main symptoms are and have the necessary knowledge for managing and reducing it before it can affect employees' daily work. Stress can have an impact both on the organizational welfare and on personal behavior of supervisors or employees, that's why, the ability of managing it can make the difference between job's success or failure. The purpose of this paper is to study Romanian managers and entrepreneurs from Bihor County's perception regarding the stress phenomenon, if they feel that they are affected by stress, if they promote some methods to reduce it and if they consider that stress can influence the organizational performance. As a research method we used an online questionnaire, applied to a number of 75 managers and entrepreneurs that represent the target group of the project "Flexibility and performance through management", project financed by the European Social Fund-"Invest in people". Each participant had to answer a number of 35 questions regarding stress and the results will be presented in this paper. The main conclusion is that, even if job itself is seen as a stressor, there are other important factors that can produce stress such as: family problems, personal problems or social problems.

Psychosocial Correlates of Job Stress among Lecturers of Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State

International Journal of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, 2020

At one time or the other, individuals pass through stressful situations which maybe as a result of transition of college, forming new relationships, going for lectures or trying to meet up with a deadline. Stress is described as the process whereby an individual responds to an event that is challenging or threatening. Although a measure of stress is good since it injects energy and motivates one to excel but generally, stress is uncomfortable and unhealthy because what stress the "mind" also affects the body (McEwen, 1998). As an individual previously the researcher thought that stress only affected top businessmen and women who shuttle different states and countries while engaging in their business activities including politicians, who experience sleepless nights while trying to govern the populace but it is a known fact that no living creature is free from stress regardless of the person's age, gender, qualification, tribe or nationality since all of us facedifferent challenges from time to time as a result of losses, changes and conflicts. Lazarus in Meyers (2009) stated that stress arises less from the event itself than from how we appraise it. This suggests that if one sees an event as a welcome challenge such a person will be focused and motivated to overcome and excel in the event, for example writing an examination, if the event is seen as a challenge that will make one excel it will not be stressful. On the other hand, if it is seen as a threat, it will lead to negative reactions which in turn breed distress which can affect our physical health. Stress is also seen as a negative emotional and physiological process that occurs as individuals try to adjust to or deal with stressors, which are environmental circumstances that disrupt, or threaten to disrupt individuals' daily functioning and cause people to make adjustment (Taylor, 2009). It is a phenomenon that affects all. Specifically, job stress is defined as the harmful physical and emotional responses that occurs when the requirement of the job do not match the capabilities resources, or needs of the worker. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2014) education and information division sees job stress as any reaction whether physical or emotional that a worker will exhibit due to the fact that what is requires from his job does not equate with his capabilities and resources. It is also

The rating of employee's job performance is an indicator that portrays the extent to which an employee is meeting stipulated standard. It is the goal of every banker to satisfy his or her customer for continuous patronage and to compete favorably with every other bank globally. However, it seems that this goal is far-fetched, considering the prevailing happenings in Nigerian banking sector today: the escalation in work-load and long-work hours, even as contract staff, providing the basis for occupational stress. This situation creates the link whereby banks spend huge sums of money and time, in training their newly hired best brains, so as to put them to shape for the purpose. The main objective of the study was to examine effect of stress management on employee performance of selected deposit money bank in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria.Descriptive survey research design was used with the target population comprising of all Staff in Guarantee Trust Bank Plc, First Bank of Nigeria Plc,and Access bank. Osun State, Nigeria. The total population wastwo hundred and twenty five(225). The sample size of 200 for this study was arrived at using Taro Yamane (1964) formula. Linear RegressionAnalysis and Pearson ProductMomentCorrelation coefficient test was adopted for the study. The findings showed work-life balance to employees performance (F [1, 188] = 32.030, P<0.05, R 2 =0.041), work overload and employees performance (r =.219*; P<.05) and organizational change on employee's performance (r (188:1) =.414; P<.05). The study concluded and recommended that the major effect of work-induced stress on an organization is reduced productivity. Reduced productivity can also result when an employee is experiencing negative work-induced stress. Employees under stress are much less inclined to channel energy into continuous improvement initiatives or creative problem solving pursuits. A job stressed employee is likely to have greater job dissatisfaction, increased absenteeism and low morale for work; finally, stress is a major contributor to health and performance problems of employees and unwanted occurrences and costs for organizations.
