Molodij včenij, 2024

The literary text introduces students to the culture and history of the country whose language they are studying. In addition, reading can be used as a means of learning a foreign language for students, regardless of age or background. However, to effectively integrate literature into the learning process, teachers must be aware of their students' needs, knowledge, culture, and language abilities. The article is devoted to the consideration of the role of literary works in the study of the English language. Learning a foreign language is a long and complex process in which language learners encounter countless methods and strategies. The purpose of the article is to characterize the advantages of using literary texts as a means of teaching a foreign language in English classes. Literature contributes to a deeper knowledge and assimilation of the target culture and different languages; therefore, it plays an important role in the process of teaching a foreign language. Authentic, i.e. original, literary works in English provide an excellent opportunity to use appropriate language samples and examples to demonstrate real language use. The use of literary texts in foreign language classes not only expands the vocabulary, promotes the formation of reading skills and trains the memory, but also forms sociocultural competence, which generally increases the motivation to learn the language. Reading in a foreign language is an important means of learning a foreign language. In the process of reading, knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar of the language is consolidated, a sense of language is cultivated, phonetic skills are consolidated, and therefore reading contributes to the mastery of oral speech. A foreign language text is presented to speakers of another culture in a different quality. It is not only a work of art, but also a source of linguistic and regional information. Behind the linguistic complexity of a literary text is often the difficulty of understanding the way of thinking of another people. The difficulty increases if we are talking about a work that is "remote" from the reader in time. In this connection, the importance of knowledge of historical, cultural and linguistic and regional studies is increasing.

LITERATURE AS A USEFUL TOOL IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

For many years, literature has been an important part of the culture of a country which, in a way, has served as an artistic instrument where readers can delight themselves with enriching stories, plays, novels, poems, etc. On the other hand, literature is a key piece in language teaching. However, many questions have arisen regarding why literature is taught, and why it is necessary for students to read and analyze works as part of the curriculum. To answer this, it is necessary to review more in-depth about the benefits and importance of literature, which goes beyond reading and learning a Shakespearean drama or sonnet, and to just simply discuss that Romeo and Juliet died due to forbidden affairs. To become aware of literature relevance, we must understand that when an author expresses his or her feelings, experiences, point of view, etc. he or she is broadening our possibility of experiencing through his or her perspective. So in the end it is not just understanding what the work is about, but also understanding what the author wants to convey by forging a connection with him or her and with the context. Hence, this paper aims to deeply analyze the benefits, problems, and possible solutions that have been raised by several authors regarding this matter.

In this paper I will emphasize and explore some of those underlying issues and concerns relevant to using literature in ELT classroom. It is undeniable fact, that while language is used to compose literature, the works of literature provide sources for linguistic development or linguistic accuracy that show the applications of language. Moreover, literature as an art of words can help the learners to become more sensitive to language-both their own and other people’s. The valuable experience for students that literature offers is to leap over the wall of self and look through another’s eyes, to see the world from another person’s point of view. Communicative approach that considers being the pioneering and effective approach in language learning is implemented largely in language classrooms to teach not only language skills such as reading, writing, listening and speaking, but also language areas such as vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Understanding of those approaches is crucial for language instructors to determine the best way to bring in class the resources provided by literary texts with the purpose of improving language curriculum.

Together with factual facts it develops a deeper awareness of the language use. Courses give indication of the complexity of various texts in terms of themes, characters or cultural difficulty. In early school years children get familiar with associations from role plays, drama, poetry and short stories that help them acquire idioms, colloquialisms and syntax adding to their general cognitive development. This method acquires enormous proportion of linguistic and literary information through higher education. At university schools other than Schools of Philology, learning English focuses not so much on the literary work from artistic point of view, as to the text conveying ideas that students familiarize with and build vocabulary. In upper levels of foreign language acquisition students increase their competence and confident to speak and present ideas in the foreign language. At advanced levels foreign learners put their imagination and research at work and many of them accomplish verbal advantage close to native speakers.
